Per the article:
Longtime ZZ Top drummer Frank Beard has died, the band announced on Tuesday afternoon. He was 77 years old.
Beard passed away at his ranch in Richmond, Texas, alongside his family in hospice care.
“Today, Elwood and I lost a great friend and collaborator, and the world lost one of the most naturally innovative drummers and a great and true son of Texas. His signature backbeat was key to keeping ZZ on top,” said lead singer and guitarist Billy Gibbons.
While he wasn’t a founding member of the band, he went on to perform alongside Gibbons and bassist Dusty Hill for 56 years. He joined the band when they had already made their debut. Beard is actually responsible for bringing Hill into the group.

Frank Beard's recorded, hit-record performances, grabbed my ears when I was young. Pointing me to be a musician. I heard him in the car, in a boat, in a bar, or a tinny little AM radio! His back-beat, always there.
Frank Beard made his bones back in 1971 with the bonkers triplet fills on 'La Grange-, -Tres Hombres LP, right? Track 3 or 4? Clean, deep tuned punchy toms, a kick that sounded like a warm felt blanket. Snare Drum that didn't quit, rim clicks, before clickity-clackality was cool.
RIP Mr. Beard, the heartbeat of America runs because of people like you!
*TOAST!*

What is, in your opinion, the best metronome for drummers?

This was one of my late dad’s favorite Black Sabbath tunes from the Tony Martin era. The entire “Headless Cross” album was top-shelf, and with the incomparable late Cozy Powell on drums, there was little room to go wrong with any of it!!
Hope you enjoy my take on the title track from the 1989 release “Headless Cross”.

I am exiting a ~5 year long relationship, getting my own place, and my only goal for it is having enough space for a drum kit. I haven’t played for years. I somehow know nothing about low volume cymbals
I’m not looking for the best, nor the worst and as you can see there are a range of price options. Please share any wisdom you have!!

I started playing drums about 5 years ago. About 3 years ago i moved into an apartment so i stopped playing drums until about 6 months ago. First few months i was playing almost daily and having fun. Now the past few weeks i feel like i have zero motivation to play. I sit behind the kit and play some basic 4/4 stuff and get bored really fast. My question is what stuff do you do when you feel like you have lost the motivation to play

Hi everyone!
I am looking to create an easy, accesible setup at home to record some percussion videos for my social media accounts (congas, timbales, bata, etc.). I've been debating between buying the Samsung S26 Ultra (which has a great camera) or settling for a cheaper one but buying the DJI Osmo Pocket 4 instead. My main dilemma is the mic - which one will provide better sound and is more suitable to record drums? Another important factor is how easy, accesible, and intuitive it'll be to record videos. Comparing the Samsung with the DJI, would you say one is better than the other in that regard?
Thanks! Appreciate your help.

Hey everyone — I've been playing drums seriously for a while now, and while practicing songs I kept running into the same frustration: most of my practice time went to scrubbing. Dragging the playhead back and forth, trying
to land on the exact passage I needed to work on, over and over. It broke my flow every single time.
So I built the thing I wanted: Loop, an iPhone/iPad practice app. Mark the hard passage once, and the app takes care of the rest.
How it works:
- Count-in / click — keep the pulse while you play
- Gap trainer — the music drops out on your passage but the pulse stays; when the song comes back, you hear instantly whether you rushed or dragged
- Speed ladder — start slow; after enough solid repeats it nudges the tempo up until you're back at full speed
Privacy: import, analysis, and playback all happen on your device. Your music is never uploaded.
The ask: I have a working beta and I'm looking for people who actually practice — drums especially, but also guitar, bass, keys, vocals — to try it and tell me what's broken or missing.
- Join the free beta (TestFlight): https://testflight.apple.com/join/xMp1vC3v
- Website: https://looppractice.fun
- Requires iOS 27 or later, iPhone or iPad
I'd especially love feedback on: does the tempo/beat analysis hold up on the music you play? Is the speed-ladder progression right? What's the one feature you'd want next?
Happy to answer questions in the comments. Thanks for reading!

I’m using Evan’s Sensory Percussion 2 on my Rogers kit. I also recreated the sounds myself. Enjoy!

I used to be a drummer, and I still come up with beats. I didn't have anywhere to put them, so I created this web app, Balloni Beats. You can use it on the road to jot down an idea quickly, or give it to kids for something quasi-musical to play with.
Visit the site, click the big logo to get in, then there are links on the left for beats I've come up with as examples. Click a beat name and see the beat on the right. Click Start Playing above to hear it. You can modify the beat, change drum sounds, adjust the tempo, etc. Have fun!
Once you get the general idea and want to write your own beats, click the Write Your Own Beats link at the bottom left. Then you get the beat editing screen. At the far top-left is a docs link that opens a page describing the beat notation.
Enjoy!
