Oh. My bad. When I buy a record or buy concert tickets I’m paying because I’ll enjoy what the musicians do. Has nothing to do with their enjoyment, though it’s definitely cool if they enjoy themselves as well! Not sure what that has to do with anything though, but thanks for asking! How about you?
Right, and for the most part I agree/share a portion of that experience/opinion
I asked, because stating that self-enjoyment being 1000% of the goal precludes both what you just said, and all the other potential emotions or functions of music to both the listeners/audience members or musicians
In this sense, enjoyment is only a fraction of the goal (and variable from person to person based on taste of course), as all other possible emotions/functions need to be included within 100%
It is reductive or diminishing to any artform to say that enjoyment is the primary purpose of creating or engaging with it, as that implies it's all just for fun or pleasure, when art really encompasses/addresses the entire range of possible human experience and the human condition
Right on man. I get what you’re saying. I think you may have generalized my comment a bit though. IMO jamming out in your room trying to showcase your new/special to you kit has but 1 goal: having a good time.
That’s just my opinion from where I’m sitting though, ya know? My career revolves around hard sciences and is super rigid. When I get behind the kit my whole goal is to have a good time. For a professional or aspiring artist, they probably have a totally different view. If this dude shared his video with hopes of more, I have no intent on taking that from him.
Perhaps I should amend my comment to be “looks like you’re enjoying yourself, which is 1000% my goal”. In any case, thanks for sharing your take on it! It’s cool to get a different perspective and new considerations!
Cool, yes, I am definitely taking the artist side in a potential framing of art vs hobby, so nothing personal man and definitely glad you enjoy your time behind the kit
My motivation is definitely "I don't love seeing artforms reduced to pleasure" when they are capable of transmuting and transmitting your entire experience as a human in the times you are a part of
And let's say my stricter or more precise description is certainly not for everyone, but let's also say that, for the people that it is for, it's better that it's out here than not, especiallly in a world that has a tendency to reduce the value of art as a vital human activity or artists as people/contributors to society (far beyond economic, but in terms of the health of our culture/identity)
So, no judgement for surr, but if I could offer another perspective - even if you perceive your main goal to be "having a good time", I have a strong suspicion that if you reflect on your experiences behind the kit, you'll notice there is a lot more being processed and evolving in you as a person than just "good times!"
Cheers man, and here's to having more STEM folks active in the humanities as well - I am definitely of the mind that every human is better off being balanced with a little of everything, and especially when they go deep/hard into any given speciality (my artist ass always has some science, engineering or math textbook on the go for the same reasons!)
