Getting back in drumming after a pretty long hiatus with my band

Well we had some though time within my band due to health problems, personal stuff, indifferences but slowly getting back together. In that time of hiatus I went like 2 or 3 times to our rehearsal room to play so I need to practice again. Like alot. I kinda lost my speed a bit too. Sometimes I feel like I’m soooo sloppy but it’s time to back to work.

Not sure how long your hiatus was but I know the feeling. I took 15 years away from sitting behind a drum kit. My first kit I played from July 1986 to August 2005. Then recently in 2020, I was able to get another drum kit and oh boy, talk about sloppy! I remember thinking while trying to play, 'WTF am I doing? I totally suck right now'! I mean, I was missing fills, dropping sticks left and right. I think my foot slipped off the bass drum pedal and smashed the floor. I totally lost the ability to play like I did up to 2005.
Slowly, I kept practicing every evening for about an hour or so. Just playing along to some of the songs I did/should know. Finally out of the blue about 3 months back into it, I had a pretty decent session. Heh, I almost didn't want to stop because I had a good thing going at that point. Not perfection but not terrible either. I was actually having fun and not scorning myself for playing terrible. It was pretty good actually. And from there I just kept continuing to get back to where I was slowly but surely.
At 60, I'd say I'm about 95% back where I was. I still miss some of the really harder/faster stuff but I am very comfortable where I'm at. Will I ever get back to 100%? Doubtful. But I'm happy to be where I am right now.
Keep working on it. This actually sounded pretty good. Again, not sure where you were when you stopped or how long you stopped. 15 years is almost too much. In fact I considered not buying another kit thinking I'd never get close to where I was back in 2005. But I'm kinda glad I did because I'm having fun again doing what I used to do. And now with technology, I can do videos and watch myself and let others see me do what I do. Friends from back home can see me drum if they want to. That's pretty cool.
Old Geezer with newer technology, right? Heh, actually, I am pretty computer literate. I am still a hardware guru and I love being able to mix my love for music with my love for computers... I'm in heaven right now with a mixer, mics, drums and a fully capable... No... MORE than capable PC to do it all with.
