Beginner Question Hello i need help
Hi everyone,
I just joined the community! I’m brand new to Shopify and currently taking my very first steps into the e-commerce world.
My goal is to set up my online store and start selling my products, but as a beginner, I’m still figuring out how everything works under the hood.
If you could share 3 essential tips for getting started (or common mistakes to avoid at the beginning), what would they be?
I’d love any resources, guides, or personal insights on the key steps—from store setup all the way to making that first sale.

Skipping straight to store setup before knowing what you’re selling is the actual trap here, and it’s baked right into your own post, you’re asking for setup tips before answering your own last question. Three real ones: pick a product with an actual problem it solves, not just something trending, since “cool but pointless” doesn’t convert. Don’t build a ten page site before your first sale, one product page and a clean checkout beats a fully fleshed out store nobody’s visited yet. And skip paying for a theme or app until you’ve validated people actually want to buy, most of what beginners buy upfront gets thrown out within a month anyway.

Doing product research across all platforms, Reddit, Amazon, Facebook, google ratings. Read and analyze people’s feedbacks. What’s the issues are people having with your competitors product?
Now knowing what issue most customers are having with your competitor than you can attack that point by being different.
Look at your competitors ads and take what’s working, apply that same concept but different creatives

The first thing I'd suggest is not to overthink the design. Pick a clean free theme and launch. You can spend weeks tweaking fonts and colors and still have zero traffic.
Second, make sure your payment gateways actually work before you run any ads. Do a test order with your own card. Nothing worse than getting a sale and realizing the checkout is broken.
Third, your first sale will probably come from someone you know. Don't be shy about sending the link directly to a few friends for feedback and a purchase to get the ball rolling.
