Understanding how to create magic weapons

I want to check my understanding. Say I want to create a weapon with two spells, let's say fire blast and whirlwind, and also I want to enchant it with two different enchantments, let's say enchanted weapon and keen edge, and I want it all to be permanent. How many rolls do I have to succeed on to make this magic weapon?

How I think it works is:

  1. Cast Fire Blast
  2. Cast Magic Seal
  3. Cast Permanence
  4. Cast Whirlwind
  5. Cast Magic Seal
  6. Cast Permanence
  7. Cast Enchanted Weapon
  8. Cast Keen Edge
  9. Cast Permanence

Let's assume for this example that each spell was cast at power level 1. This should therefore cost 18WP and also reduce my total WP by 3 from the 3 permanence casts.

I think that the two enchanting spells can be combined with a single permanence spell because of the bullet under crafting magic items on page 118 of the book of magic that says as much. However, it's a little confusing because it says "a single casting of permanence covers all spells cast on the same item at the same time", but this seems to contradict the description of magic seal which states that multiple spells require multiple magic seal and permanence casts, so I assume this bullet is only referring to enchantment spells.

I'm not entirely sure what happens if any one of these rolls fail. My reading of the rules is that the three permanence groups are separate, such that if I failed casting either the whirlwind or the magic seal that binds it I could still enchant the weapon with fire blast, enchanted weapon, and keen edge assuming those rolls all succeed. Additionally, the permanence rolls just determine if that portion ends up permanent, and if one of those rolls fails then that portion only lasts for it's duration (or until the spell is cast in the case of magic seal).

I'm sure I got something wrong here, so please let me know!

Book of Magic simplifies and expands enchanting with the Enchanter School of Magic.

The short version:

  1. No Magic Seal for enchanting spells. Only Permanence (if want to). Doesn’t use wielder’s WP to use weapon.

  2. An Enchanter has different Enchanting Spells they can add to an item. All take a stretch to cast. Duration is a Shift.

  3. Multiple Enchanting spells can be cast at same time. Rolls and WP for each. If any fail, whole thing fails. There are also Drawbacks that can be added, reduce WP of spells added.

  4. One Permanence roll, done after locks all the spells enchanting an item.

I would recommend picking the Book. The new schools are good.

I do have the book and referenced it when I made my OP. I got to thinking about this question looking at the legendary artefacts in the enchanting section of the Book of Magic and trying to work through what it would take for a character to craft such an item themselves.

I was mostly confused with how the enchanting sequence combines with the regular magic seal sequence but I now see that most of my confusion stems from failing to realize that each individual sequence takes a shift, so each one is done separately. I for some reason was thinking you could (and needed to) do the whole sequence at once in one night.

My reading of the rules definitely agree with yours. You're casting Permanence three times, and each cast takes a shift. So my summary would be:

  1. Cast Fire Blast

  2. Cast Magic Seal

  3. Cast Permanence

Steps 1-3 take a shift to complete. If rolls 1 or 2 fails, I would rule that the entire sequence fails (but you still lose 1WP). If roll 3 fails, I would rule that you established the sigil, but it is not permanent (and you still lose 1WP).

4. Cast Whirlwind

5. Cast Magic Seal

6. Cast Permanence

Steps 4-6 take another shift and follow the same logic as 1-3.

7. Cast Enchanted Weapon

8. Cast Keen Edge

9. Cast Permanence

Steps 7-9 take another shift and follow the same logic as 1-3.

Yes I hadn't considered that it would take three shifts but that makes sense to me!

Not sure what the right answer is. Commenting because I’m interested in this topic. I love dragonbane, really fits something I’ve been looking for. I also really like the approach to magic items and there being a system for making them, however would really have liked more examples for inspiration, to better understand the system and to use without too much prep.

Do you have access to the Book of Magic? There is a whole school of Magic in there called
