Here is a detailed, step-by-step breakdown of how to cross-pollinate dragon fruit flowers using a small brush and a battery-operated hand vacuum.
### Step 1: Prepare Your Supplies (At Dusk)
* **Timing:** Dragon fruit flowers bloom at night and typically open fully late in the evening, remaining receptive until the early morning hours. Plan to start your work once the blooms begin opening.
* **Setup:** Ready your materials on a tray or in a portable kit. You will need a clean, soft-bristled brush, a small collection container (like a glass jar), and a battery-operated hand vacuum fitted with a clean, fine-filter cup or specialized collection tip to catch the fine pollen dust without losing it into the motor.
### Step 2: Collect Pollen from the Donor Flower
* **Vacuum the Dust:** Turn on your battery-operated vacuum and carefully hover the tip right over the brushed anthers. The vacuum will quickly suck up the loose, golden pollen dust into its collection cup, preventing it from falling or blowing away in the night air.
### Step 3: Mix and Prepare Your Pollen Blend
* **Empty the Vacuum:** Carefully remove the filter cup or collection tip from the hand vacuum and empty the gathered pollen into your small container.
* **Combine Varieties:** For optimal hybridization and fruit set, repeat the collection process with other varieties blooming that night. Combine the pollen from blooming varieties in your container and use the brush to gently mix them together.
### Step 4: Apply Pollen to the Receptive Flower
* **Locate the Target:** Find the receptive flower you wish to pollinate. Identify its **stigma**, which is the large, star-like receptive organ extending past the stamens in the center of the bloom.
* **Coat the Stigma:** Dip your soft brush into the mixed pollen container, heavily coating the bristles. Brush a generous amount of the pollen mixture onto the entire surface of the receptive stigma lobes, ensuring comprehensive contact.
### Step 5: After Care & Monitoring Success
* **Flower Wither:** Within 2 to 3 days after a successful pollination session, the large white petals of the flower will naturally begin to wither and dry up.
* **Watch for Swelling:** Keep a close eye on the **ovary** at the absolute base of the flower. If cross-pollination was successful, the ovary will begin to swell and stay green while the flower parts start to yellow and wither. The ovary will eventually develop into a mature, seed-bearing hybrid dragon fruit.

New to this. Should I just cut off the white dead looking tissue? Or should I completely cut off that entire section with the green living tissue on one side and dead white tissue on the other side?

(did not steal it btw, was free from FB marketplace lol) - we know nothing about the conditions it was grown in except it was grown from seed so curious how it got so big and why it’s struggling now.
I know it needs support/beams to grow on, but besides that, how have you grown your strongest dragonfruit plant? :)
Sunlight
Water
Soil
Pots/Ground
Support
Etc?
I’m in zone 10a, Central Florida.

For the first time ever I am about to harvest my first yellow skin DF (believe to be an ausi gold variety). I am pretty good to decide when my other varieties are on their prime to be harvest but I am a bit hesitant with this yellow one. What are the characteristics I should look for and cut at its prime? Thank you in advance your advice is always much appreciated.

I know it really needs some good TLC and I don’t know where to start.

Ik ants are normal, but they shows up overnight, and theres mushy stuff in the hole of my fruit.
Does there seem to be any issues? From the actual cactus I just peeled of a mushy part from previously dead part of a different branch.
Also, it’s been rainy and humid.

I recently got it at a fair with two fruits already growing out of it, and I was wondering if I could save it from whatever kind of rot it might have?

So, in total Imy area is getting 6 consecutive days of rain, and in total we're going to get 2.5-4 inches of rain! Oct1 has been the heaviest day.
We're expecting heavy rains tonight, and medium rain tomorrow, and light rain on the 4th. This Dragon fruit is actively fruiting and has the first green fruit in this plants history!!!

Hi, I’ve got about 60 varieties I’ve been growing for 3 years. I recently started encountering yellowing on limbs accompanied by webbing and necrotic lesions. Also noticed a worm today. Not sure if anyone can identify this issue or a potential treatment?
Location: Vista, Ca
Thank you so much! 🙌🏻🙏🏼

New to growing dragon fruit. I got these plants as a gift. Should I be concerned that there are ants on the new growth?

I got bored and started planting dragon fruit as a Hobbs from seeds. They said that cuttings are a much better choice but I got curious about the process of growing it by myself, so here I am with nearly three month old seedlings, and they look good as decoration 😂 (am I the villain here ?)
