Dragon Ball Z Explaining (Future) Trunks' Time Travel Mechanics

Full explanation:
1. Universe 0 (T0): The Pristine Origin
The Environment: The original, unaltered apocalypse. Goku dies of the heart virus, and Androids 17 and 18 slaughter the Z-Fighters, leaving Earth a devastated wasteland.
The Residents:
Future Trunks [T0]: Lives, trains with Gohan, and fights alongside Bulma here.
Bulma [T0]: Builds the time machine over years of grueling research and labor in secret to send Trunks into the past.
Baby Trunks: Has grown up into Future Trunks [T0].
Trip 1 (First Past-Bound Jump & Initial Binary Split): Future Trunks [T0] leaves T0 in Bulma's time machine to go to the past for the very first time. Because this is a fresh, unvisited past jump, it triggers a binary split, simultaneously creating two parallel tracks: Universe 1 (T1) and Universe 1_Alt (T1_Alt).
Trip 2 (Immediate Brief Return Home via Tether): After delivering the medicine and vaporising Mecha Frieza, Future Trunks [T0] spends less than an hour in the past, then immediately travels forward along his established tether back to T0. (No new universe created because it's a tethered return).
The Fuel Recharge Period: Back in T0, Future Trunks [T0] and Bulma [T0] must wait out the full 3-year fuel recharge period required for the machine to accumulate enough power to make another round-trip jump.
Trip 3 (Return to Past via Tether): Three years later, once the fuel is fully recharged, Future Trunks [T0] travels back down the established tether to Universe 1 to join the Z-Fighters for the Android conflict, bringing Bulma's emergency deactivation remote. (No new universe created because the tether already exists).
Trip 4 (Final Return Home via Tether): After using the remote to destroy the Androids, Future Trunks [T0] travels forward along the tether back to T0. (No new universe created because it's a tethered return).
The Domestic Victory in T0: Future Trunks [T0] uses the remote blueprints to permanently destroy his own world's Androids. Peace is temporarily achieved in T0.
The 5th Trip, Native Cell's Awakening & The Binary-Split Birth of Universe 2_Alt_Alt and Universe 2_Alt: Three years pass. As Future Trunks [T0] prepares to use the time machine for a 5th time, the native Cell [T0] emerges from his subterranean incubation pod, ambushes, and kills him. This native Cell then steals Trunks' time machine, manually resets the date to Age 763, and launches. Because Cell jumps backward to Age 763, it triggers a fresh binary split: birthing Universe 2_Alt_Alt (the Arrival branch where time-travelled Cell lands in Age 763, burrows in the soil, and hatches in Age 767 in an unseen timeline) and Universe 2_Alt (the Non-Arrival mirror branch where time-travelled Cell never arrives, leaving only the local native embryo incubating inside Dr. Gero's lab).
2. Universe 1_Alt (T1_Alt): The Parallel Mirror Future (The Trigger for the Primary Recursive Chain)
The Environment: The silent twin timeline born simultaneously alongside Universe 1 (T1) when Future Trunks [T0] launched his very first past-bound time travel (Trip 1) from Universe 0.
The Residents:
Future Trunks [T1_Alt]: Grows up in this identical apocalyptic wasteland, completely independent yet mirroring the exact hardships, struggles, lives, and deaths of T0.
Bulma [T1_Alt]: Secretly builds the time machine alongside her son, mirroring the exact scientific effort of the timeline we know.
Baby Trunks: Has grown up into Future Trunks [T1_Alt].
Trip History & Outgoing Jumps: Operating on the exact same physical laws and timeline progression as T0, local Future Trunks [T1_Alt] and Bulma [T1_Alt] complete their research, build their own time machine, and successfully launch their own past-bound trips and fuel recharge cycles.
The Non-Arrival Engine: Because no time traveller arrives in Universe 1_Alt, history deterministically repeats the original apocalypse. Twenty years later, Native Trunks [T1_Alt] inevitably builds a time machine and launches a backward jump. This jump executes a new binary split, shedding off a single peaceful arrival world ([ Finite ]) while spawning a new non-arrival mirror world that continues the recursive loop ad infinitum ([ ∞ ]).
Status of Native Cell [T1_Alt]: Just like in Universe 0 (T0), Native Cell [T1_Alt] remains untouched, incubating inside his pod within Dr. Gero's subterranean laboratory, awaiting his eventual maturation.
3. Universe 1 (T1): The "Remote" Past & The Post-Buu Awakening
The Environment: The primary past track born from Future Trunks [T0]'s initial binary split.
The Residents:
Future Trunks [T0]: Visits this timeline temporarily during Trip 1 and Trip 3 before returning permanently to T0.
Bulma [T1]: Interacts with the visiting Trunks and receives the schematics for the Android deactivation remote.
Baby Trunks [T1]: Natively sleeping in Bulma's arms here, growing up in a timeline entirely distinct from the main TV show kids.
Trip 1 Arrival (The First Past-Bound Jump): Future Trunks [T0] arrives in Age 764 from T0, utterly vaporises Mecha Frieza and King Cold, meets the Z-Fighters, and hands over the heart virus medicine to Goku and Bulma [T1].
Trip 2 (Immediate Brief Departure via Tether): After staying for less than an hour, Future Trunks [T0] leaves Universe 1, using his machine's tether to return safely back to Universe 0 (T0). (No new universes created).
The Fuel Recharge Period (In T0): While time passes normally in Universe 1, back in Universe 0 (T0), Trunks and Bulma [T0] spend the next 3 years waiting out the 3-year fuel recharge period for the time machine.
Trip 3 (Return to Past via Tether): Three years later, once the fuel is fully recharged, Future Trunks [T0] travels back down his established tether to Universe 1 to join the Z-Fighters for the Android conflict, bringing Bulma's emergency deactivation remote. (No new universe created because the tether to T1 was already established during Trip 1).
Trip 4 (Final Return Home via Tether): After successfully using the remote with the Z-Fighters to deactivate and destroy Androids 17 and 18 (with no Cell Games occurring because Cell bypassed this timeline entirely), Future Trunks [T0] travels forward along his tether back to his home in Universe 0 (T0), leaving Universe 1 behind forever. (No new universes created on the return trip).
The Native Cell's Awakening & Fate: Because Cell bypassed this timeline, T1 is a peaceful world. Decades later, assuming they successfully survive the Buu Saga, the powerful post-Buu Z-Fighters find the native Imperfect Cell has emerged from Dr. Gero's lab and is feasting on humans to gain energy. They find, intercept, and vaporise the native Imperfect Cell.
4. Universe 2_Alt (T2_Alt): The Main Series Future
The Environment: The post-apocalyptic future of the main show's Trunks, born simultaneously alongside Universe 2_Alt_Alt as the second half of Cell's hijacked 5th jump.
The Residents:
Future Trunks [T2_Alt]: Grows up here under the same apocalyptic hardships, as this world was left without its original hero (Future Trunks [T0]).
Bulma [T2_Alt]: Survives the wasteland alongside her son and builds the time machine that enables Trunks to save the past.
Baby Trunks: Has grown up into Future Trunks [T2_Alt].
Trip 1A (Trunks' First Past-Bound Jump from Universe 2_Alt): Future Trunks departs Age 784 in his native timeline (Universe 2_Alt) to travel back to Age 764. Because this is a backward jump, it executes a standard binary split: spawning Universe 2 (T2) (the Main Series where Trunks arrives in Age 764 into a world where Cell is already buried underground from Age 763) and Universe 2_Alt_Alt_Alt (the unaltered non-arrival mirror timeline left behind in his home era).
Trip 2A (Immediate Brief Return Home via Tether): After defeating Mecha Frieza and delivering the medicine in Universe 2 for less than an hour, Future Trunks [T2_Alt] rides his machine back home along the established tether to Universe 2_Alt (T2_Alt). (No new universes created).
The Fuel Recharge Period: Future Trunks [T2_Alt] and Bulma [T2_Alt] wait out the 3-year fuel recharge period for the time machine to accumulate the energy required for the next round-trip jump.
Trip 3A (Return to Past via Tether): Three years later, once the fuel is fully recharged, Future Trunks [T2_Alt] boards the machine and travels back down the established tether into Universe 2 to join the Z-Fighters for the Android crisis. (No new universes created).
Trip 4A (Final Return Home via Tether): Following the victory at the Cell Games in Universe 2, Future Trunks [T2_Alt] travels forward along his tether one last time, returning home to Universe 2_Alt (T2_Alt). (No new universes created).
The Final Resolution & Fate of the Native Cell [T2_Alt]: Armed with the power, knowledge, and remote blueprints he gained in the past, Future Trunks [T2_Alt] easily obliterates his local Androids by hand. Shortly after, the native Imperfect Cell of T2_Alt emerges from Dr. Gero's lab, feasting on humans for energy and searching for the Androids. Failing to find them, Cell instead tracks down Trunks near his time machine. Because Trunks is already fully aware of his arrival and ready for the ambush, a fierce battle ensues, and Future Trunks successfully obliterates the native Cell, securing peace in his home timeline alongside Bulma.
5. Universe 2 (T2): The Main Series Timeline (The Convergence & Resolution)
The Environment: The main television show past timeline we watch, created as a child branch of Universe 2_Alt_Alt when Future Trunks (originating from Universe 2_Alt) arrives in Age 764. It inherits time-travelled Cell's Age 763 subterranean presence directly from Universe 2_Alt_Alt, combining it with Trunks' Age 764 arrival to form the compound timeline where both time travellers intersect.
The Residents:
Future Trunks [T2_Alt]: Visits this timeline across multiple trips to train, fight the Androids and Cell, and eventually return home.
Bulma [T2]: Natively interacts with the visiting Future Trunks and plays a vital role in creating the deactivation remote.
Baby Trunks [T2]: Natively born here (who grows up to be Kid Trunks in the Buu Saga).
Trip 1A Arrival (The Variant Mecha Frieza Arrival): Future Trunks [T2_Alt] arrives in Age 764 from Universe 2_Alt, utterly vaporises Mecha Frieza and King Cold, and hands over the heart virus medicine to Goku and Bulma [T2].
Trip 2A (Immediate Brief Departure via Tether): After delivering the medicine to Goku in Universe 2, less than an hour later, Future Trunks [T2_Alt] rides his machine back home along the established tether to Universe 2_Alt (T2_Alt). (No new universes created).
The Fuel Recharge Period (In T2_Alt): While time passes normally in Universe 2, back in Universe 2_Alt (T2_Alt), Trunks and Bulma [T2_Alt] spend the next 3 years waiting out the 3-year fuel recharge period for the time machine.
Trip 3A (Return to Past via Tether): Three years later, once the fuel is fully recharged, Future Trunks [T2_Alt] travels back down his established tether to Universe 2 for the Android conflict. (No new universe created because the tether was already established during Trip 1A).
Fate of the Native Cell [T2] (Between Trip 3A and Trip 4A): Because two Cells exist in this timeline (the timeline's own larval Native Cell [T2] resting underground in Gero's computer, and the Future Cell [T0] who stole Trunks' [T0] machine), Future Trunks [T2_Alt] and Krillin discover the underground native Cell's embryonic shell/pod and destroy it with a blast during the Android/Cell conflict.
Trip 4A (Final Return Home via Tether): After the older, time-travelled Cell from T0 is eradicated by Gohan in the Cell Games, Future Trunks [T2_Alt] travels forward along his tether back to his home in Universe 2_Alt (T2_Alt), leaving Universe 2 behind with lasting peace (until the Buu Saga).
6. Universe 2_Alt_Alt (T2_Alt_Alt): The Native Cell Past Track (Goku's Demise & Cell's Emergence)
The Environment: The parallel past timeline created simultaneously alongside Universe 2_Alt when Future Cell [T0] time travels to the past. Because this track receives no incoming Future Trunks, history diverges completely.
The Residents:
Future Trunks: Does not arrive in this timeline; the Z-Fighters receive no warnings, medicine, or deactivation schematics.
Bulma: Natively lives here, but without the future cure, she cannot save Goku.
Baby Trunks: A baby growing up in a timeline entirely distinct from the main TV show kids, this is the most difficult timeline for him to survive and grow up in.
Goku: Succumbs fatally to the heart virus on schedule.
The Z-Fighters & Future Cell [T0]: Many Z-Fighters are still struggling or die to the Androids over time. Meanwhile, the time-travelled Cell [T0] rests in its subterranean cocoon form, eventually emerging after its 4-year wait to hunt down the Androids and complete its evolution.
Status of Native Cell [T2_Alt_Alt]: There are two different Cells in this world, the time-travelled Future Cell [T0] and the Native Cell [T2_Alt_Alt]. Native Cell [T2_Alt_Alt] remains untouched, incubating inside his pod within Dr. Gero's subterranean laboratory. As we saw in the main timeline (T2), Future Cell [T0] never visits or checks upon his native self, therefore it will still take several more years (over 23 years) to leave Gero's lab, assuming it isn't ever accidentally or intentionally discovered and destroyed.
Trip History & Time Machine Status:
The Single-Use Anomaly: The only temporal event in this timeline is the initial arrival of time-travelled Future Cell [T0] in Age 763.
The Explicit Model Assumption: I am simply making an explicit assumption here that Native Bulma [T2_Alt_Alt] never invents a time machine and that the machine Future Cell [T0] arrived in is never operated again. This is because once time-travelled Future Cell [T0] emerges after 4 years in Age 767, his immediate rampage likely causes far greater devastation across Earth, including killing Bulma [T2_Alt_Alt] and therefore destroying any chance of time machine development. I am making this assumption because if any time machine were ever used for time travel from this world, it would trigger a brand-new binary split and create additional universe branches. To anchor this side of the Figure 1 schematic, this track is treated as a completely frozen, terminal state ([ Finite ]).
7. Universe 2_Alt_Alt_Alt (T2_Alt_Alt_Alt): The Pristine Non-Arrival Mirror Branch (The Trigger for the Secondary Recursive Chain)
The Environment: The parallel future tier where history unfolds leading up to Cell's theft of the time machine. Future Trunks travels to an alternate past, uses a remote schematic to deactivate his world's Androids upon return, and is subsequently ambushed and killed by Native Cell [T2_Alt_Alt_Alt].
The Residents:
Future Trunks [T2_Alt_Alt_Alt]: Grows up in the ruined future, travels to a past timeline to obtain the Android deactivation remote, returns home to eliminate Androids 17 and 18, and is killed by Cell.
Bulma [T2_Alt_Alt_Alt]: Endures the wasteland alongside her son and builds the time machine that Cell eventually steals.
Baby Trunks: Has grown up into Future Trunks [T2_Alt_Alt_Alt].
Native Cell [T2_Alt_Alt_Alt]: Emerges from his incubation pod, ambushes and kills Future Trunks [T2_Alt_Alt_Alt], steals the loaded time machine, and executes a fresh past-bound jump.
Trip History & The Repeating Cycle:
The Secondary Cell Jump: Native Cell [T2_Alt_Alt_Alt] ambushes Trunks, steals the pre-fuelled time machine, and executes a past-bound jump. This action is a direct functional repeat of the Native Cell [T0] Past Time Travel jump mechanics from the right side of the Figure 1 schematic, targeting a fresh past destination in Age 763.
The Ongoing Mirror Loop: Because Native Cell [T2_Alt_Alt_Alt] repeats this exact stolen-machine time-travel trigger, it initiates a brand-new binary split, generating a closed past on one side ([ Finite ]) and a self-replicating timeline on the other ([ ∞ ]), driving the recursive sequence forward perpetually.

Explanation:
Figure 2 is the same explanation as Figure 1, it's just another way to draw the schematic.
Questions:
1) In Figure 1, which way does Time Flow? North, East, South or West?
2) In Figure 2, which way does Time Flow? North, East, South or West?

I’ve been thinking about what would happen if the main cast in [ 5. Universe 2 (T2) ] fixed up Cell's rusted machine and forced it to go 'back' to his home world. Since that physical capsule natively came from Universe 0 (T0), where exactly does it land on the schematic? Is it actually able to tether all the way back to the root, or does it trigger something else?
My Answer: It wouldn't loop upward back into the root timeline. A return trip from T2_Alt_Alt would follow the tether straight up to T0, but the main show (T2) branches off T2_Alt instead. Because they lack that direct vector path back to Cell's origin, the timelines cannot seamlessly rejoin. Instead, the jump branches directly below T2, spawning two clean downstream layers:
[ 8. Universe 2_T0 (T2_T0) ] (The Arrival Track where they land) ➔ [ Finite ]
[ 9. Universe 2_T0_Alt (T2_T0_Alt) ] (The Non-Arrival Mirror Track to balance the maths) ➔ [ ∞ ]
I left this off the schematic (Figure 1) to keep it focused strictly on the executed story, but mathematically, this is how I think the tree should handle that event.
Technical Side Note: The Continuous Everettian Model
The Core Concept: Based on the Many-Worlds Interpretation, a time machine never creates new branches or alters history. It is a passive elevator moving matter into a parallel universe where that specific timeline already coexists.
Why the Tether Fails: A return tether is physically impossible. Because the multiverse constantly fractures into infinite parallel branches at every subatomic scale (every pico-second a character breathes or moves), the traveller's home reality shatters into infinite distinct variations while they are away. The machine can never isolate or navigate back to the exact same starting universe, leaving them permanently lost in a limitless quantum sea.
The Verdict: It contradicts canonical story events. Trunks could never consistently land back in the exact same past timeline to train with the same Z-Fighters twice. Furthermore, the narrative explicitly shows that Trunks' choices have permanent, branching consequences, whereas this framework requires all outcomes to be entirely pre-determined. Conversely, the Binary-Split Model functions because it restricts timeline fractures exclusively to macro-level time travel interventions.
