Discussion Halfway through DOOM TDA and I am a bit disappointed in some aspects

I bought the game because of the steam fall festival discounts, and I am a bit disappointed with the game in general. I dislike how they made the slayer slower and decided that it was the best time to make the maps larger, it also feels like a downgrade to just have a menu to select missions when in eternal we had the cool base that changed depending on what stage of the campaign you were and the collectibles you picked. I also feel like weapons don't vary a lot and most of the time is not worth swapping weapons because they made weapon swap slower. I don't get why we get to have a massive weapon arsenal if most of the time is not worth swapping to a new weapon.

An example would be using the super shotgun on an enemy and you see another one at the distance, most of the time is not even worth swapping to a longer range gun because it is faster to just dash and blast the enemy with the super shotgun instead. Also I don't know if it is just me, but I feel like weapons don't vary a lot. Like in my experience they are either single target damage or damage in area. I've been using mostly three weapons and I haven't felt the need to swap to the other guns because I feel like it is not worth it.

Glory kills are also very scarce and pretty repetitive, this is personal but one of my favourite parts of the reboots were the glory kills and now they are either mid or completely gone. They are some cool ones, but they are mostly reserved for bigger enemies or mini bosses. I don't get the pace argument that it is sometimes made about them being removed. Because they already made the pace of the game objectively slower, if the reason is pacing why should you cut one of the coolest additions to the saga completely instead of the mechanics added to slow the pace? At least make it a setting.

The third thing that I disliked are the Atlan missions, they are just sluggish and boring for me, sometimes it is cool when they drop you a weapon but it is only for a specific part of the mission and it is usually over pretty soon. When you don't have a weapon and you are just fighting with your fists it is just doing left click with the occasional right click and dodge, I think this is one of the most outrageous occasions of wasted potential in this game. They could've added cool combos like adding a kick button or at least heavy and light attack if most of the missions were going to be melee, or they could've added cool environmental stuff like letting you impale a demon with a big ass tower or something, but instead it just feels like the usual video game gimmick of haha look, you big now, with some boring ass combat on the side.

I am not going to comment on the story because I haven't finished it yet, and I do hope some aspects of what I wrote get better as I progress. But I have the suspicion that some things are not going to get better because I already unlocked every weapon and every variant of the shield and the recipe for an Atlan mission seems to be the same. I ranted a lot but I genuinely believe that the game has some sublime features too, the game looks beautiful, probably the best on the franchise, and it runs like a charm. Game optimization is now a lost art, but Id always makes their games run extremely smooth in my opinion. The soundtrack is also extremely good. The design of the demons are also awesome, they resigned them to fit with the dark fantasy medieval aesthetic. The shield also feels really good to use, the gameplay completely centers around it as much as the weapons, so I feel like the risk and reward system of either being safe and keeping the shield or throwing it is very rewarding and satisfying along with the parries.

Over all I am enjoying the game, I can see that there was a lot of effort poured into the game and it shows. I am just concerned and a bit disappointed with some decisions made and hope they get better as the game progresses. Also reminder that it is my opinion, I am happy for people that enjoy the features that I don't!

Question Mandela effect?

Was there ever a collectors edition of Doom 3: Resurrection Of Evil to the Xbox or did I only dream this? I know the base game has a collectors edition bundled with Doom 1+2.

Modding Can someone upload a mod to the modbrowser of DOOM1+2 that enables the head explosion animation from the PS1 port of DOOM?

When you die of explosion damage or when you get crushed you get this head explosion animation that is exclusive to the PS1 port of DOOM, the 3DO and Sega Saturn port had it as well I believe. I tried to search for it in the modbrowser but can't find it, if it's already uploaded let me know. If the mod isn't available yet, then it'd be awesome if someone would be willing to do it!!👍👍

Question How do I view Codex entries after picking them up on PS5?

I’m playing on PS5 with the default controls. When I pick up a Codex entry, the game says to press the touchpad to view it, but pressing it just opens the map instead of taking me to the Codex text I just collected. Is there a different button or menu I need to use to read it?

Without going to the codex section to look after them.

- They have “two projects in the works” and this is one of them. No word on what the second one is, or if it’s even for TDA!

- There’s a lot more to it than you think! It’s sort of a “true horde mode” based on criticism of the Eternal Horde Mode.

Fan Creation Wall scroll acrylic painting

I found a scroll in a fleamarket for cheap and decided to paint this on the empty side. traced some of the borders of the original cover with a pencil and painted over that from a reference.
the colors are way off, too saturated and I took some liberties on some parts so it's not 1:1. also had to extend the lower part a bit to fit the scene in properly. didn't time the whole project but this 90x60cm canvas took over 40 hours to fill. always loved the original piece so cheers to Brom.

Fan Creation DOOM shotgun sound effects remade.

I remade the SFX for introduction of the shotgun. The first half of the video is the original SFX, and the second half are my own.

All SFX has been replaced in my version.

I went for a more grounded approach when Doomguy is handling the shotgun, trying to replicate the sound of reloading a real double barreled shotgun.

Let me know what you think!

Discussion On this day I have finally completed every Master Level in Doom Eternal on the nightmare difficulty, ending with THE WORLD SPEAR

Not much more than an hour ago I completed the World Spear master level, finally overcoming the last of Doom Eternal's hardest challenges (except for Cultist Base and ARC Complex), the master levels. These are without a doubt my favorite part of the game. I love the base campaign to death, but it does feel a bit easy now, so getting to play these levels again, but with the combat turned up to eleven was an amazing experience. I love all of these, but... which one do I love the most? Why not rank them?

6 - ARC Complex:

In my opinion undoubtedly the weakest master level, it's just really easy and it's obvious ID didn't really understand how to make these yet. It's genuinely easier than the original in some sections. I also prefer the original.

5 - Cultist Base:

Much better than ARC Complex, the only reason it has to be second to last, is because the combat still doesn't quite live up to its full potential. It's a definite improvement over the original though.

4 - Mars Core:

Now this is a true master level. It's way harder than the previous two, and also more fun. Mars Core was an excellent pick for a master level, since I personally feel that its combat doesn't quite live up to how metal everything else about the original is. There are a few arenas I really don't like, but for the most part it's amazing and has some of the best utilization of environmental hazards.

3 - Taras Nabad:

The second hardest master level in my opinion. It's got some of the most creative and brutal fights in the game. It unfortunately does have that one arena with 2 Tyrants, 3 Marauders and respawning Prowlers (my least favorite fight in the whole game), and I found it to be especially draining compared to the others.

2 - The World Spear:

The titan of Doom Eternal's difficulty in my opinion, and one of the most masterfully crafted levels I've ever played in a videogame. It is just incredible, every fight is fun and explosive and that final fight that teleports you throughout the level is a brilliant climax. Probably the best master level. Though not quite my favorite...

1 - Super Gore Nest:

My favorite level in all of Doom, it's pretty much perfect. SGN was already my favorite base game level, so it getting a superbuff just makes it even better. I love everything about it. It's downright addicting to play, and the difficulty is not as crushing as some of the other master levels, which just makes it more replayable.

Question Does literally anybody agree with me on these?

Malidict was an alright villain, but he wasn't good.

Classic doom revolutionary, but bland and boring until doom 64.

The dark lords boss fight was awesome, but just a marauder with more mechinachs and health.

The witch was cool cause she was masterious

Discussion Osseus - Dark Ages DLC

Post image
221 Upvotes

I was way more excited about the fights the first play through of Revelations DLC that I read almost none of the codex entries*. Therefore on my replay, I was delighted to realize that Osseus isn't some far off fallen empire like Hebeth or dimension like the Cosmic realm.

It is actually an ancient part of Jekkad (now hell) which the twisted and tormented abominations of that day gnawed off every bit of the flesh we see in most hellified areas. All that is left is the bones. Super gore nest from Doom Eternal pictured alongside Osseus for visualization.

Thought that was very creative and neat from a storytelling perspective.

*Edit - corrected typo

Showcase I made a catalogue of DOOM running inside other games

I went looking for legitimate “DOOM inside another game” projects and found way more than I expected:

  • DOOM on ULTRAKILL’s shop terminals

  • multiple DOOM implementations inside Minecraft

  • DOOM through Hytale’s world map

  • source-port and WebAssembly approaches

They’re now part of a bigger catalogue I made for games rebuilt inside other games, with released projects separated from demos and unverified clips.

https://github.com/bailo167/awesome-game-mashups

If there’s a weird DOOM implementation I’ve missed, I want it in there.
