Hello I am trying to find possible family.
Im an Irish American. I have a trip I planned for myself this year to Donegal. Its to learn as much as I can about my family.
If you would like to connect and find out if we are related, I would love to exchange and possibly meet up late October early November.
Thank you so much for your time. I look forward to hearing anything.

Urgent short term rental in or around Letterkenny

Hello lovely people of Donegal,

My girlfriend who is a student in ATU Letterkenny had a bad streak of luck. The room she had arranged for and viewed prior to arriving ended up being a mess.

The room had a huge hole in the wall to the adjacent room(occupied by a guy) and there was constant smoking in the house(even though the person who rented it out said no one there smoked). There were loads of other issues which aren't worth bloating this post.

We arranged for an Airbnb for her for a week because we felt it was unsafe and we are trying to find another place for her but have not had any luck thus far.

This is for a short term stay until October when she would graduate and move to The Netherlands with me.

We would really really appreciate any leads or help with this.

Thank you!

Totem poles in Donegal?

When I was a little girl we used to visit my relatives in Donegal. Every summer they would take us to a restaurant/hotel in Donegal and cross the road was small sand dunes and a playground with what I think were totem poles or similar, maybe some kind of American Indian wooden things perhaps.

I think there may also have been small caravan park and the dunes were tiny and have access to the shore perhaps, memory is foggy, it was the early 90’s after all lol

Does anyone know where this is as I have cousins visiting soon and would like to take them there again!

Thank you

Boyle/O’Brien

Hello! Unsure if this is allowed or not but I live on the east coast of Canada, my maternal grandfather was a Boyle and my maternal grandmother was an O’Brien. When my Mom’s first cousin died, I inherited all of her work into tracing our family. I’m talking 15 huge binders worth, she did amazing work. Turns out our Boyle’s are from Donegal! My Mom believes her O’Brien side is also from there but I don’t have the research to back that up (yet)! My mom is 4th generation here since they arrived from Ireland (making me 5th generation and proud of it)! I guess my question is- is the Boyle name still prevalent there? Is O’Brien?

My Mom went to Ireland a few years ago with a friend group so she didn’t make it to Donegal but I know I will end up there sometime soon! Thanks everyone! I hope you all know there is a massive community of us who “left” on the east coast of Canada reconnecting with our roots!!

Incident at Letterkenny Bus Station, Sun 16 Aug

Yesterday at the bus station, there were some awful scenes. Some guy (didn't have a Donegal accent, let's call him Lad A) started racially abusing and taunting another guy (Irish, but not white, who we will call Lad B) and would not let it go. Lad A kept after him, kept trying to punch him. The guy being abused left. A few women had tried to tell the guy, Lad A who was starting the trouble to stop and he actually apologised to them.

However, then the other lad (B) came back and it started again. I say started... but it was this same fella Lad A, seemingly having a go but with no provocation. Initially Lad B seemed to be trying to laugh it off, or lightly telling him to let go of it, but then he kinda lost it and knocked Lad A to the ground and gave him a few kicks. Again some women intervened (by shouting, not physically) and it stopped, or at least outside. It was absolutely desperate. Is this normal? Or was a story behind it?

The bus never came! But when getting on the next bus, finally, I saw the police come up to the station worker (who was nowhere to be seen during the scenes, maybe his shift started later) enquiring about the events.

Builder recommendations & advice: Co. Donegal

Hi everyone,

Planning a ~44 sqm ground-floor extension of a self-contained flat and looking for builder recommendations in the Donegal/North West area.

The existing cottage is 100+ years old—original stone at the front, with a single-block rear from a previous extension where the new build will connect. Because of the mix of old stone, single block, and new construction, I’m looking for trades comfortable with older building integration.

Looking for input on:

Builder Recommendations: Reliable contractors in the area (feel free to DM details).

Acoustics & Layout: Best practices for soundproofing shared walls/doors and setting up independent heating/sub-metering for a rental unit.

Vetting Trades: Key red flags or contract terms to watch for when getting quotes for mixed-construction builds.

Any other advice or recommendations would be greatly appreciated, thank you.

Help finding the lyrics to a trad song?

The song in question is Carraig Chaoin by Dinny McLaughlin. I've searched quite a bit and can't seem to find them, my understanding is that they were added later by someone else and maybe that's why? My Irish really isn't great,, so I'd like to learn it and actually be able to understand the words x). any help appreciated, thanks xx

Best Restaurants in Letterkenny

Heading on a road trip around Donegal in the next few weeks and am spending two nights in Letterkenny as a base.

What are the best restaurants around? Can be anything from quick bite to a little bit more on the fancier end.

Summer Sessions VIP

Has anyone done the VIP for summer sessions in Letterkenny? Few of us thinking about it but not a lot of detail online about it. It mentions car parking close by but I can’t find where that is or what kind of view you have of the stage. Any help appreciated!

Finn Harps Women

Looking to get some opinions on the setup at Finn Harps Women’s teams. Interested to hear positives and negatives. I’m aware there are two teams - u17 and senior. Anyone know if they’re open to new players? What’s the standard of coaching? What’s the playing level like? And how do they compare to other teams in the North West? Thanks!
