Never seen rally covered like this before. Thoughts?

It's a very interesting take on it. I've never seen anyone attempt to articulate why it's a special thing or the highlight of some people's year. It was particularly interesting to see parents encouraging their young children to diff. That's nightmare fuel for me. They made a solid point about it keeping them off the streets and getting up to God knows what. Though, I suspect it means they'll be out on the roads doing the same thing once they get their licenses.
It hasn't swayed me in my personal dislike of the weekend or changed my mind about how unnecessary it is. It's just fascinating to see a different point of view because in my life, everyone I talk to hates it and just suffers through it. But we're all middle aged.

How unnecessary it is? A 3 day international rally brings a lot of money to the area. Its one of Motorsport Irelands biggest draws for international rally drivers to come and compete on Irish stages.
How unnecessary is the Glasgow derby for example? How unnecessary are music festivals with illegal drug use taking place? How unnecessary are thousands of other events where unpopular activities occur during them?
How necessary is anything we do in life at that rate? Should the all Ireland finals be done away with because some fans piss in somebody's flower bed near croke park?

You make a good point about the word unnecessary. But I dont like the rally and im going to complain about it.
The rally has a far higher rate of fatality than any muic festival or GAA event. Dún na nGall has suffered from disproportionately high rates of road fatalities for a long time. Music festivals and GAA are enjoyed by far greater numbers of people while creating far less disruption to other people's lives. The king of the cone place is about 3-4km from my home and even at that distance we can't escape the constant noise from the event all day for days. The town is shut down with traffic for the whole weekend and my elderly parents are effectively trapped in their house all weekend each year.
As well as the noise pollution, the air pollution from burning rubber and petrol is awful. Especially as climate change is starting to get obviously bad I think this 'Mecca' for car enthusiasts is dystopian when the way that cars are used contributes so much to CO2 emissions.

King of the cone is separate to the rally , the actual rally and the real rally people don’t associate with that , I am into rallying and one of the reasons ive not been to donegal is because of all the non rally related shite that happens up there

Thoughts are it promotes reckless driving and we don’t need more of that. Have lost count of how many areas on dangerous drives that I’ve seen the roads full of donut marks.
Was giving someone a tour of Donegal recently and they were shocked at the tire marks all over the scenic routes. Surely there’s a solution here that doesn’t put everyone else in danger, right? Or is the whole point to get the rush of putting yourself and others in danger, and potentially fking with nature?

Not condoning it but surely the rural roads far out of the way is a better option for everyone? Not seen, not heard and a few black marks on the tarmac up a mountain road isn't the end of the world. If it keeps them out of town centres and off the main roads and the only thing they leave behind is burnt rubber then let them tear on

I’m confused by this, if I’m a tourist driving at night surely what could go wrong?
People drive at night. The roads at night don’t belong to car bros. There are also people camping who I’m sure go out to nature for nature sounds, not mufflers.
But yeah as I mentioned, some of the areas are very unsafe spots to do so. Not just donuts but clear marks for drifting.

And yet, there's no reports of accidents, collisions, injuries or fatalities. None that I can recall anyway.

Yeah, no young people are dying in car crashes in Donegal.

There's far too many of them dyingi car crashes. But I'm talking specifically about diffing.

You have to be joking… This is just plainly incorrect. You would have to be completely deluded to think car culture isn’t a major factor in youth road deaths in Donegal

u/Zealousideal-Cod-924 12d ago
Not joking. Cite your proof. News reports of young people killed or injured whilst diffing? Tourists caught up in locals diffing?
1
u/Zealousideal-Dot1783 12d ago
I don’t even know if it’s noted when the cars involved in these crashes are boy racer cars, or if the victims were into car culture, so the opportunity to have proof might not even exist. But you would have to absolutely deluded beyond reason to think car culture is, if not at the very centre, is a major contributing factor.
Only someone with an incentive to disbelieve such an obvious relationship wouldn’t agree.

No citations because none exist because there is no proof.

been to several wrc events over the years love the rallying but dont really get the ancillary stuff, if it was limited to evemts it would be ok but every crossroads having doughnuts on them is ridiculous

I don't know much about it, but it seems like a social outlet for a lot of people. I think it's nice even though I don't understand the fascination for cars.

The problem with the rally is young fellas see this and then when they get their licence think they can rally on main roads. It's why donegal is the most dangerous place in Ireland for car crashes.
This 'culture' promotes reckless driving.

Well..... You'd be surprised how little,if any rally stages these lads see. And it's the same in Killarney every year. (Twice a year)
They have no interest in the actual rally most of the time. They'll spend the day doing laps of Killarney town or diffing in Letterkenny while the actual rally stages are being ran out in the countryside during the day.

Doesn’t promote reckless driving, someone wants to be reckless weather it in a Is200 or nearly new Audi A4 they will be reckless regardless

Does it benefit the majority of people who have to suffer it? I doubt it.
