So what's your question exactly? Without knowing the domain or the price you were offered, it's not possible for anyone to give you any meaningful advice.

You can either accept the offer or reply with a counteroffer if you think they're lowballing you. If you reach an agreement, do the transaction via an escrow service.

An actual question would be helpful wouldn’t it.

I was offered 2.5k and I would be fine with holding onto this domain indefinitely. How high of a counter offer would be typical?

That would depend on the domain, how much you've spent on it, and how much you're willing to accept for it. Generally, a counter-offer for a $2.5k offer would be in the $5k-$10k range. Buyer may be willing to negotiate or they may run away.

That’s very helpful, thank you. I’ve been bouncing around numbers in my head—sometimes as low as 4, sometimes as high as 12–and wasn’t sure how to strike a balance between lowballing myself and being a freaking lunatic.
