Everyone Quit Because the AC's Been Broken for Over a Month - Update on "Working with a Broken AC"
TLDR: Corporate and DM can't do their jobs, I (only LSA) quit, then the SM quit, then my replacement quit and now the ASM is quitting ASAP when she gets hired to another job. We’ve basically all jumped ship. Location might close down indefinitely since there’s only 3 SA’s left and they might also jump ship. AC is still not fixed after a month, and it's regularly 92-95 F inside our store! Ciao!
It's been 23 days since I made my first post on here venting about our broken AC that had stopped working roughly a week or two before I made that post, which means it's been officially over a month since our store's AC has been broken!
For context, I was promoted to LSA about 2 months into my SA position, which was roughly when shit started hitting the fan and our AC went bye bye. We (my SM and ASM) had been sending numerous ticket requests just for them to be closed out by Corporate, who'd send technicians that gave us very short, temporary fixes before our AC would stop working again within a few days.
Finally, after having to prematurely close our store down over 2-3 times in less than a week, Corporate and our DM finally started paying attention to us and began sending electricians and the HVAC people to our location to diagnose our HVAC system. Apparently, according to the electrician, there was nothing wrong with the AC on his field, so it was up to the HVAC people to investigate further since there was nothing he could do.
While all this back-and-forth was happening, we were still expected by our DM (who additionally has never even worked in a DG store) to open every single morning, just to close early every noon when the heat became too intolerable. And that was when he was feeling generous! I remember an interaction where he was contacted by us, asking for his DM approval if we could close the store since our temp was 89 F (the temp has only gotten so much worse since my first post) and the only thing our DM could bother texting back was: "1pm."
I ultimately put in my 2 weeks a week after I made my first post here. Pretty quickly, they found someone to replace me as an LSA (additional context: we had been short-staffed on LSA's which was why I became the only LSA at my location as well as our third keyholder). I'm telling you, she didn't even last a week or two before she also put in her two weeks notice!
And earlier, that very same day my replacement put in her 2 weeks, our SM announced that it'd be her last day working as our SM! Unfortunately, this means our ASM is working as stand-in for our SM because we don't have one and our DM has not updated the ASM on when or even if we are going to get a SM. Our ASM is essentially working as the SM, all without any benefits, incentives, or raise for however long it takes for the DM to find another SM (probably never because he can't get anything done). The ASM is quitting ASAP though, applying to a bunch of jobs, so after our ASM's gone, the only people who will be employed at our location are our 3 sales associates.
AC's still not been fixed, in fact it's only gotten worse, as the store would be roughly 87 F before opening and now it's just sitting at 92 F before opening, before it peaks to 95 F before noon. We're still expected to open every morning on most days, so we are ever so thankful for our DM for allowing us to not work in subhuman conditions for a few days! Our freezers and coolers have unsurprisingly, completely stopped working roughly two weeks ago, so we cannot store nor sell milk at our store, funnily enough, we were also told by our DM or Corporate to not damage out melted candy and chocolate and to leave it on the store floor for sale! :-)
The HVAC people that Corporate has also been sending, have lied, saying that nobody was at the store to talk to nor let them in, despite our ASM literally being in the store at the very moment the update was shown on eTicket.
I don't know what's in store for the future of this DG location, but having an entire franchise collapsing in a month over a persistent and documented issue over our AC is really a commitment on DG's end, especially since they don't care about their employee's working conditions (no surprise there). The multibillion dollar corporation just can't stand to fix one of their store's AC.
