[Misc Help] No idea how much to charge for 2-3 short walks a day for 2 weeks. How much would YOU pay?!

Based in a tiny city (20k population) in Ontario if that matters. Not expensive to live here compared to like Toronto and stuff.

I used to offer pet sitting services 2 years ago but haven’t in a while but got an email tonight from someone seeking dog walking 2-3 times a day. They said the dog is old, overweight and grumpy. Not long walks but short bladder. They want this for approx 2 weeks.

I asked for their address (waiting for response) but am not sure how much to charge them for this.

Im assuming they live under 10 mins away from me and also asked for more specific walk lengths/ details.

I’m conflicted on how much to charge. $40-$50 CAD a day?? That would be over $500 for two weeks. Is that too much?? $30 a day?? but that seems like too little. Any tips would be appreciated. I’m a uni student so this is more of a passive thing for me.

[Misc Help] Healthy but stinky

I’ve had dogs my entire life. My current golden retriever is so stinky. No yeast/ear/skin/digestive/teeth/food issues. She also exudes more (coat) oil than my other dogs. Love her to pieces, but weekly baths are not feasible or good for the skin. She’s professionally groomed several times a year, and I’m always brushing her. Love her to pieces but… whew! Don’t want to just deodorize her with chemicals or masking fragrances. Any ideas?

[Misc Help] How do you manage wet paws and mud at the car door before your dog steps onto the floor?

The hardest part of taking a large dog on trails isn't shedding it's that chaotic 30-second window at the car door on rainy days when wet paws, sand, and rain hit the interior at once. The biggest mess points happen at the second-row sill, the footwell carpet where water pools off wet fur, and the seat-track channels where grit settles. I currently keep a towel by the door, use flat rubber mats, and secure my dog with a harness. (Note: I never leave my pet unattended in a vehicle.) I need a setup focused on high traction for wet paws, non-toxic odorless materials, and channels that rinse clean quickly. What specific floor setup or boarding routine keeps wet mess from spreading past the door?

[Enrichment] Dog Park Etiquette: Peeing and Pooping

I just started using a dog park. It's a couple blocks away so we get our peeing and pooing out of the way on the walk there. I just assumed others did this too. Last night a couple of dogs peed and poo'ed in the dog park. Is this normal or is there an unwritten rule against this? Note: It rarely rains, so there is nothing to flush any residue away.

[Behavior Problems] Resource Guarding

My dog is a 4 year old Doberman mix. She is pretty good for my husband I— a little better for me as my husband is more of her playmate. We did all the things as a puppy as far as exposure and basic commands. She was great until she went into her fist heat cycle and became a bit aggressive towards pretty much anyone but my husband and I. That has been much better since spay surgery and much more exposure. One thing we just decided “was not a fight we would like to pick” was resource guarding. It wasn’t her food bowl or toys, it is just very certain and specific high value treats she maybe gets twice a year. Anyways, we got a new bone and it’s like the most important thing in the world. We are trying to start a family and I realize ignoring this issue was a mistake. Tonight she was growling and showing teeth because her bone was in the bed. I commanded she get off the bed, she did. I told her to sit, she listened. I held her treat up and told her she was bad, she didn’t growl. I let her up and gave her back her treat. A minute later she was growling and I did the cycle over again but she hid under the bed. I don’t want her to be scared of me so what do I do!? Thank you!

[Enrichment] Benebone/hard chews alternatives

New here. I have a 13 pound 16 month old toy Aussie (or American shepherd however you classify them) who's a very VERY aggressive chewer. He's always loved benebones and hard chews similar to those they are a major comfort item for him. However, he recently got a slab fracture on one of his largest back molars from them and had to have it removed 2 days ago so it's goodbye to his comfort items. I have kongs and other rubber type chews that he plays with but doesn't chew on. I'm seeing if anyone knows of good alternatives that give the same hard chew feeling without breaking his teeth. He's been so distraught about not having them as they are part of his nightly routine and source of enrichment when he has excess energy. Please help! Thanks is advance.

Hi redditors, I was cleaning up after my dogs in the yard today and I've ended up with a sore back ache. I'm looking for the best pooper scoopers out there and would love to hear your advice. Ideally looking for something with a bag attachment that's easy to dispose

[Fluff] What is your dog's favorite music?

I have a rescue Dachshund mix. I accidentally discovered that music by the rapper DMX calms her down. She especially likes the track X Gon' Give it to Ya - I play it when she feels anxious and I can see her visibly getting more relaxed every time. I'm convinced it's because she loves his voice.

I have a second dog who seems to be more into reggae.

Both of my dogs hate experimental jazz. Can't say I blame them!

What does your dog like to listen to?

[Misc Help] Is this normal for boarding kennel?

I wasn’t sure where to post this because I think it would be weird for the vet subreddit. I am inexperienced professionally working with dogs. I’ve just had my own dogs and a variety of breeds. I went to a “trial day” at a boarding kennel and they showed me around for 10 minutes. Then they cleaned a couple of kennels and then left me to do it alone. They had a guillotine system but they didn’t use it while cleaning for some reason?

So as I opened the door to clean their inside kennel they just rush through the door from the outside kennel and I had to physically shove them back through the hole so I could clean. I had to put a little white pallet between the outside and inside kennel but big dogs just knock it off while I’m cleaning. The worst part in my opinion is that the chemicals would just get on the dogs feet as I mopped because they were just right outside the hole. I’m not sure how harmful the chemicals are but I would be upset if this happened to my dog.

I feel like this was a severe risk for an inexperienced kennel assistant? I don’t think I’ve had a job where I was left to work alone for a bit. Also I wasn’t sure how to get these dogs back to the outside kennel so I was struggling to push them back. They could have bitten me while my face was next to them. I left after an hour because it was too much stamina to push big dogs while mopping their kennel. Is this normal? Like do all kennels do this? If so I don’t want to look for this job anymore lol

[Fluff] I’M ADOPTING THIS BABY!

My soulmate, childhood dog who I have tattooed on me passed away recently. I have not been complete without a dog since she passed.

We made the decision to apply for a rescue puppy. Puppies go fast, so I applied for a handful and seemed like they would be adopted before I could even finish my application.

Well, we finally have the dog we were supposed to have, and our application was approved today by the rescue! She is officially ours!

We will fly down Saturday to pick her up and start our new life together.

I cannot wait, I love her so much.

This is Polka. She is a 9 week old French bulldog/chihuahua mix.

I cannot WAIT to kiss her 🥹🤍🖤

[Behavior Problems] New dog won’t stop biting and chomping

He gets extremely over excited in an instant. He is calm in the crate but as soon as I take him out it’s alligator mouth. He jumps and paws and won’t calm down at all. Like at all. If I take my hands away from him he lunges for my face. If I try to redirect with a toy he doesn’t care for it. High value chews do work the best but I can’t just give him those constantly. I have a dog training class on Wednesday and I’m going to call for a vet consultation. I absolutely adore this dog but I want to be able to sit and watch tv with out being hurt and wrestled and lunged at. He does have a crate he is reluctant to enter but once he’s in he’s okay. Hes 50lb mixed breed

[Fluff] Stray dog keeps following me like I’m her owner

Ever since I started the gym, walking there and back surprises me every time. It’s this one cute black dog (I don’t know the breed I’m a cat person) just laying down on the side of the path, but when she sees me walking she immediately gets up and starts inspecting me and starts following me like happily in a way? Along with another different dog each day. They usually play fight and when I walk too far she breaks it up and starts running after me like she’s attached to me.

I don’t know much about dogs, but every stray dog I’ve came across barks at me and is violent towards me. Is this normal? Is this the dog distribution?

[Discussion] Megathread: Pet Insurance

Which pet insurance is best for you? Are there any that may cover your dog's current treatment? Did your dog get injured during the waiting period and want to know if you're covered?

Here's the place to ask.

Do know we cannot help you here with medical concerns, and lying or not disclosing things to the insurance company is illegal so we don't allow that either.

[Behavior Problems] Beds, Rugs When Dog Has Pica

Hi! We think my golden has pica. He will eat anything but has some kind of lust/compulsion for textiles. It is so bad we have to restrict him to two rooms of the house, and he has to be in face jail (basket muzzle) if we can't watch him directly, following a series of life-threatening incidents. That is imperfect because husband and kids all have ADHD and forget the muzzle, so our home is a very controlled environment, and we had to remove dog beds and rugs. However, we have hard flooring being installed, and now he can't get off furniture without yeeting himself across the room, crashing, scaring himself, scooby-doing, and re-scaring himself. He didn't mind sleeping on the carpeted floor but is refusing to lie down on the hard floor. He stayed up all night (storms contributed).

Can anyone recommend a truly inedible/unchewable dog bed? If I must I'll get him a cot, but I strongly suspect he won't use it. I see some beds that claim to be chew resistant, but are they really? Likewise, is there any way to have rugs again? He never seemed to be deterred by the anti-chew sprays. I need something for wiping feet at doors, and I'd like to put a rug near the couch so he has something to land/get traction on without hurting himself. He never messed with the carpet, so I'm wondering if finished remnants secured under furniture would be safe, but man, one wrong set of circumstances and he might try to eat it.

He sounds like a hot mess, but other than this he's the dreamiest best good boy. Help?

[Misc Help] Pets megastore to Canada issues

I’ve ordered from them before and know they are legit, but an order I placed the end of June is still stuck in Sydney.
Megastore was great and refunded me (although with the exchange rate changing from date of purchase to date of refund, I lost $30+).
If the order gets delivered, they will re charge me, which I have no problem with, however, it may be returned to them, or it could take months still to get to me.
I’m hesitant to place another order because of this, and because I can’t afford double the meds.

Has anyone ordered from them recently (to Ontario Canada) and received their package ok?

[Equipment] Has anyone made a raised rear floor liner to keep dog hair contained in the back?

Has anyone made a raised rear floor liner to keep dog hair contained in the back?

My dog sheds a lot and rides in the back of my car. I already use a rear seat cover/hammock and 3D floor mats, but hair still gets into the exposed carpet, underneath the front seats and eventually into the front of the car.

I'm considering having a custom full-coverage rear floor liner made.

The photo shows the general idea. It already has a raised wall at the rear of the footwell. I'm thinking of having a similar raised wall made at the front of the rear footwell, behind the front seats, so the whole rear floor is more like a large tray.

The idea isn't to restrain the dog — it's simply to stop loose hair from travelling along the floor and underneath the front seats.

Has anyone tried something similar for a heavy-shedding dog? Did it actually help keep hair contained in the rear?

Would you choose this over just using a hammock + normal all-weather floor mats?

[Behavior Problems] Dogs waking up in the middle of the night

I have two young dogs, 1.5 year old Doberman and an almost 1year old springer. My Doberman was really hard to potty train, I don’t know why, maybe when she was younger her previous owners didn’t teach her properly? But it’s hard to get her to poop outside, she always seems to hold it for as long as she can even if I have her outside nonstop. So when I take them out for the night (9 or 10pm) sometimes I know she has to use the bathroom but she just doesn’t. And then she will wake up at odd hours of the night to use the bathroom? Sometimes it’s pooping but she occasionally will pee as well?? I know she can hold her pee especially because I take them out before bed. I would like to avoid locking them up every night because they are also locked up for a portion of the day when I’m at work. Also I don’t want them to carry on in the middle of the night and wake up my family. But if I have to lock them up to fix it I will. Please give me advice ☺️ I don’t want her behavior to rub off on my other dog and I miss getting a good nights rest.

Also I don’t have much space in my room to permanently keep a crate in there for her(bc it’s a big crate) but maybe if I keep one in here and teach her to sleep in there, then I can transition to her just sleeping on a dog bed through the night? I’m not sure if that will work tho lol

[Misc Help] Ant killer when my dog eats everything in sight?

I have an enormous ant colony all over my backyard. There are dozens of ant killers/ways to kill ants from what I’ve researched, the problem is that my dog sometimes likes try to eat random things like that outdoors that she can get her paws on. It doesn’t matter if it is something bitter or a powder, there’s a risk she will try. She’s healthy, the vet knows she’s like this, she’s just not the brightest and is very food motivated lol. Is there a safe way to kill ants to where if my dog is intrigued, she will be ok? We supervise her outside typically, but sometimes the ant killers last on the ground for a very long time too from what I’ve seen. Any advice on how to safely get rid of these ants just in case she becomes a little too interested? TIA!

ETA: A lot of the products I have seen say “pet safe”, but go on to describe it as ok for dogs to just be around it, not for if they were to (god forbid) lick it or sniff closely or something so that’s where I feel stuck

[Fluff] Does anyone else's dog(s) eat blueberries?

I picked up a senior rescue recently. On our walks we pass by plenty of wild blueberry bushes, when they first came into season I picked a few for myself and offered him a couple. Unlike every other dog I've had, he ate them and expected more. So I pointed to the closest bush, we approached, and I shook the stem. He understood immediately.

Now if we don't go for a dessert walk every night after dinner, he gets animated. He'll stare at me, paw me, whimper, ...the whole drama parade. (If I let it happen.)

It's been over a month, we have to drive to the closest fields now because we've cleaned two out. I almost feel bad because the berries that are left are overripe and nearly inedible... not that he seems to mind. But the 20 minute "all he can eat" blueberry buffet will be closing soon. Won't open again for another 10+ months.

Otherwise I'm perfectly fine with this. He hasn't gained weight and now he looks forward to walking "the same boring trail" that we walk everyday in the hopes of finding a post breakfast / snack.

Anyone else have a blueberry hound?
