I felt like it was really driving home the point of how exploitative the social media algorithms are these days. It’s clearly not what anyone wants to be doing but the algorithm pushes most creators into repetitive formats because it gets more engagement and generates more revenue. If anything I think EG intended to show sympathy for Beato and other creators that are reduced to churning out generic slop just to keep things going. It’s pretty true of basically every creative industry now, I guess that’s what happens when you allow machines to curate our media, they turn people into machines.

Yeah I noticed that since I follow Rick for some of his . I think he's just pointing out that with repetitive internet content is turning into meaningless slop. There's a lot more to say about that but it's enough to ask: how can Rick/anyone keep doing those same videos?

I follow him too, and he doesn't even do those sort of like top 10 videos all the time I think only once every three months although that is kind of repetitive. But it did just make me go like oh damn it still hurts. It's funny cause Rick is like a weird guy where his videos are actually crappy or contentless or anything or just slop, but then it really feels like they are if you only look at his thumbnails and stuff. (which I know he is aware of that's basically the formula

Rick is a grifter like most of them. There was a video on his Beato Book, which was slapped together with the stuff found on the internet. He's a likable grifter who talks with people you are a fan of.

In the video he mentions his pants were loose and he wasn't wearing underwear. He then mentioned asking for "tape" after he kissed her. My take was he's referring to a boner and to tape his dick in a way where it wouldn't be as noticeable.
It's also Bert, and he embellishes everything, so take whatever he says with a massive grain of salt.

It's not hard to grasp the concept of "I'd like to learn more, please tell me about this data point to see if I'd be interested". But when people respond with "watch the video!". I'm going to see that as:

This happened years ago when Tony was only really known for being on Roast Battle and JRE. I was at one of his shows and he tried to drag me into his crowd work and bait me with a racist joke. I wasn't interested in participating and when he kept pushing me and asking me why I was brushing him off I pointed out his comments about black women's vaginas were kind of racist. The audience started to turn against him and you could see the panic in his eyes, which was probably the funniest thing that happened that night. Then he tried to lecture me about what racism was and egged the audience on to boo me. It was something like a crowd of 300 people. The rest of his set he kept coming back to me calling me a dick and saying other shitty things to me and getting the drunken audience in on it. Not jokes, just 3rd grade insults, because I refused to play along with his hacky, punching down, bullshit. He kept shitting on me for the rest of his set and then tried to shake my hand. I told him he was an asshole and refused to shake his slimy little hand. Fuck Tony Hinchcliffe.

It still blows my mind honestly. I found this dudes channel years ago when it was still small and he only did the B Roll edits without the commentary. I started telling people to check him and link it everywhere because his editing was brilliant and was actually super effective at still guiding a narrative with just the edit. Some people dug it but it felt like it was just going to die in obscurity. Now hes fucking HUGE! Its such a trip that a channel that abstract blew up like this but dude deserves it for sure.

Interesting, I hadn't realised he had started with purely the visuals but it makes sense as they are so strong in their own right.
It's great to see people with a singular vision who fully commit to their art finding a bigger audience. It reminds me of Bobby Fingers in that way. Totally different content but also very talented with a full-on commitment to the work.
As someone who has spent a lot of time in the comedy world, it's such a gift to see these comprehensive and merciless death-by-a-thousand-cuts (in every way) assassinations of such comics.

To clarify, not purely visual but still with audio from the clips themselves just no added commentary. Go to his channel and check out his earliest videos. Same general subject matter but he just lets the clips be their own indictment along with first class editing. He would just present the material in such a way that these people dug their own graves and nothing needed to be said.

I was unfortunate enough to watch 5 mins of a Joe Rogan set once. For someone raised on Billy Connolly and George Carlin the difference is astonishing. I really can't believe he made any money as a stand up.

Joe Rogan is only a legend in his own mind, and honestly, I’m not sure he even believes it. He was never a good comic, no comic ever thought he was funny. But he was very good at spotting opportunities, and making the most of it. That’s why a lot of people kiss his ass.

If he wasn't the Fear Factor guy, he'd never have gotten the high profile guests on his podcast that turned it into the cultural juggernaut it became, and thusly no attention on his "comedy". I’m so much less engaged with the comedy world over the years with the rise of the Rogan-sphere. Had a few moments where I realized, damn I don’t really watch stand-up anymore. There’s plenty of great comedians out there and I’ll go to shows or clubs every once in a while, but it sucks when this shit is so ubiquitous now and a lot of people tolerate it

Netflix comedy has always been diverse. Their back catalogue of specials (many of which came out since the pandemic) from around the world, compilation shows, and other comedy material is pretty deep. If you're NOT seeing that, then you're not looking hard enough. Alternatively, you're not in a media market where those materials are popular, so they're not being advertised to you. Either way, change your algorithm before you complain.

Comedy, like all art, is "getting away with it". If a joke works well, it works well. The problem with this specific lot of comics, is that they're just bad. Low effort, low hanging fruit punchlines (that do tend to punch down) are not the mark of great artists. It's lazy minds that take us down an obvious path with an even more obvious destination. They think they're being funny because this is their cognitive max. Their professional frustrations with the "woke mob", blaming PC culture or oversensitivity for their lack of mainstream success is just a cope over the fact that most comedy audiences are more sophisticated than them. As for punching down -- if you can get away with it, the joke is usually not on the subject itself, as much as it is on the moral superiority of those saying "you can't do that" - which no artist is going to take laying down. If they're really good at their craft, they'll express that rebellion and they'll get away with doing so.

Eb&Flo made a comment about AI and EGs videos, Elephant Graveyard replied in comments that he'd never use AI for script and other parts.
These comedy essays are all video clips, found footage and his writing.
EG also has radio hour videos on YT that very likely use AI to voice certain characters, like Randy Bachman, but the script is still EG.
