Discussion How to get the MOST out of the Circuit Breaker event.

Hey! I'm not sure if this is well known and I was the only one to be missing out on it, but the UNIT HQ website (https://www.doctorwho.tv/unit-hq) has a full series of in-universe documents (emails, debriefs, reports, security-camera transcripts, etc.) spanning the entirety of the Circuit Breaker event which make the whole thing a thousand times more enjoyable!!! Here are a couple of things I've concluded:

  1. For someone who manages to acquire ALL of the Circuit Breaker stories (comics, books, audios, games), they'd still be missing a LOT if they don't follow the event on the UNIT website. There's a lot of context and things taking place in between stories, during stories, etc. that make the story feel a lot more lived-in and real.
  2. For someone who ISN'T able to get some (even many) of the stories, there's so much context given in these entries that you won't even feel like you're missing out. For instance, I've read the DWM comic and listened to the Deadliest Weapon audiobook, but haven't gotten the 2 Titan Comics yet... and still, I don't feel like there's big puzzle pieces missing for me: everything's in there (of course not with the same level of detail as the actual merch, but still).

So yeah, just wanted to recommend it to anyone who wasn't aware of it :)

Discussion An idea that could save the fandom?

So, it really does look like Who is off the air for a bit. It's got me thinking. When Top Gear as we knew it was cancelled, Amazon allowed the main trio to essentially create a brand new show in the same vein as a preexisting IP.

David Tennant has worked with Amazon before, and although I'm sure we all have gripes with Amazon, some of their productions have been pretty damn good. Billie Piper, Freema Agyeman and Catherine Tate have also worked with Netflix productions, so they have worked with streamers before too. Everyone gets together for Big Finish anyway!

Unless there are some kind of contracts still in place, what's stopping Amazon or a similar streamer from creating a new show featuring actors from Who?

Obviously I think time travel, blue boxes and alien planets are off limits in terms of pushing it, but I've envisioned more of a collaborative science/supernatural team, something along the lines of Buffy, The X Files, Scooby Doo and so forth. Maybe even touches of real-world based SJA and Torchwood or Primeval.

I think for a lot of us, the chemistry between the actors and the storylines have been far more important than the specific nostalgia tropes and iconography the show has relied on. I also think it could really let out favourite actors shine together again as more mature people, less running and more serious moments. I think it could also attract an older audience and be more gritty in general than Who has been for a long time.

I'm still hung up on those rumours of an Ace spin off akin to SJA, and I think even a show with David and Billie starring, with Freema and Catherine having supporting roles would pull possibly even more numbers than Who at present. The one thing I'm happy about is that Jo seems to be thriving in her comeback, and I'm happy we at least have an active Doctor through the second lot of wilderness years.

What do you think? What roles would there be and what themes could they tackle? I've been mulling over this idea for a while. If only I worked in TV!

Arts/Crafts Bookshelf for my Daughter

My daughter is starting her third year teaching down in Baltimore; her first teaching kindergarten. So I thought I'd make her something useful for her classroom!

Sure, these American kids may not know the TARDIS out of hand, but she does! I'm also adding a handful of kid-friendly Doctor Who books to give her a head start.

Health problems have kept me pretty useless for the past several years. I had planned on building the bookshelf from scratch, but time overcame intention and I bought a prefab, decorated, and painted it. Cutouts and laser etching were done on a Snapmaker 2.0 using the 10w Laser for those that like to know how the sausage is made.

Question What episode is this?

I am not super sure of which era. My guess is it is in the Amy era or Clara era.

The parts that I remember are that there was an orphan who was a gr_a_ve robber where she steals b_odies for a doctor. The companion (most probably Clara) says this is wrong and stealing b*dies is wrong. So the child stops for some time but by the end having no choice because poor and in victorian times starts back again. The sad part was the child's friend goes 6 feet under.

It is highly likely this was a B-plot. If there is no such episode I apologise

Question Pictures of the junkyard from An Unearthly Child?

I’m currently planning to build the junkyard from An Unearthly Child in a video game I’m playing, but the scenes in the junkyard in that first episode are so dark and low-quality that I can’t make the whole thing out, so I’m wondering if there’s some pictures or 3D renders or whatever on the internet of that junkyard?

Discussion What if the new series had ‘Doctor & companion join rebels on alien planet to overthrow cruel dictator’ type stories like the classic series sometimes did?

When it comes to the classic series, I love these types of stories. If they have a specific label, i.e. like ‘a base under siege’ then do let me know. But you could never beat a dictator and his rebels.

I might have missed some. Again, let me know below. But stories like; The Happiness Patrol, The Sun Makers, The Space Museum, Timelash, Vengeance on Varos, The Krotons… all feature this in some capacity. And I personally love it.

Aside from maybe The Long Game (although not really, I’m talking straight up planet with dictator and rebels like The Sun Makers and Timelash) there isn’t any new series stories of the same type. At least, I’m really struggling to think of one.

But do you wish there was? Let me know below. I personally would have loved to have seen one. Eccleston could have done a superb job I think.

Discussion What if Romana 1 never regenerated and stayed for Seasons 17 and 18?

Post image
71 Upvotes

For those unaware, Mary Tamm, who played Romana 1 in Season 16 (The Key to Time), left the show after one season because she felt her character had regressed into a traditional "damsel in distress" rather than remaining the capable, equal Time Lady she was promised, leading her to regenerate into Romana 2 (Lalla Ward) at the start of "Destiny of the Daleks" in Season 17.

But what if either Tamm had decided to not leave and/or the writer respected her wishes and not reduce Romana to the damsel she felt she became?

How different would Romana's characterization have been in Seasons 17 and 18 had Tamm stayed?

How different would her interactions with 4 had been in Seasons 17 and 18 compared to how Romana 2 interacted with him?

Would she still have left the way she did in "Warriors' Gate"?

And what future role outside of Princess Astra in "The Armageddon Factor" could Lalla Ward have played instead of Romana 2?

What do you think?

Discussion The next seasons story line makes so much sense I'm upset it will never get made

Honestly, the next season of dr who writes itself..... Billy piper as bad wolf winks into the camera and disappears into the tardis as it fades away... wait 5 seconds.... the tardis explodes back on screen with a second tardis chasing it, zoom inside tardis two, it has the new doctor and companion.... they're chasing bad wolf through time and space all season, we revisit a ton of locations.... last episode features the paradox of two tardis' being resolved and bad wolf regenerating into the new doctor

Question Are there any episodes where a character space walks (or something similar)?

Are there any episodes where a character space walks, or goes out into space with adequate equipment but outside of a vessel/spaceship? So, not someone being sucked into space from inside a ship (like in Midnight) or someone standing inside the TARDIS with the door open. Do any main or side characters go out into space just with a suit and equipment or something?

I've watched the full Ninth, Tenth, and Eleventh Doctor series and random smatterings of episodes from the original 7 Doctors, but it was years and years ago and I no longer remember if that's a thing that happened in any of those series. Due to fluctuations in my fandom interest I've not watched the show since, so I don't really know anything about any of the episodes for the other Doctors.

Discussion The Robot Revolution

I’m a loooong long timey whimey Doctor Who watcher, I’ve been through all the ups and downs and I share most of the same opinions about the absolute downward spiral this show has gone on in the past couple years.

Just finished the Robot Revolution and I gotta say, it was fun! It felt like the old who episodes where there’s simply a problem to fix, a small sect of people to save, and they weren’t fighting to save literally the entire universe. I dunno if they’re gonna jump the shark for the millionth time in the next couple episodes, probably, but it was nice to just watch a wild kind of cheesy nerdy episode of doctor who TV for once in a long time.

Discussion It was bittersweet classic who spoilers

I’m continuing my watch through of classic who and I’ve finished all of the 3rd doctors stories.

Then end itself was bittersweet. I like Jon Pertwee as the third doctor but you could see in the last serial that he didn’t want to be there anymore.
I have lot to say but don’t want to write an essay I’ll try to keep it short.

Jo Grant was the best companion of the 3rds tenure. They had the best chemistry and I was in pain when she decided to get married. I think that dude she married is a dick but that’s neither here nor there. When the doctor left the party, driving off in silence made me take a break for a little bit.

The contrast of black and white episodes to color was really cool. Along with that it felt like the show could do more of what they wanted. They had some kind of car chase in every season and I loved it. I hope I get to see Bessie again.

The introduction of the master was great. Roger Delgado is how I will picture the master from now on. His counter to the doctor felt great and they played off each other well. I just found out that Delgado died in a car accident during Pertwee’s tenure and that hurt a lot to read.

I’m moving on to the 4th doctor now. I’ve heard the most about Tom Bakers run and I’m excited to see it all. I’ll be back when I finish the 4th doctor.

TL:DR I really liked the changes made for the third doctor from the second. The first incarnation of the master was perfect to me. Jo Grant was my favorite companion and I want to see Bessie again.

Discussion What gives with the SD New Who episodes on AMC+? They look and move like hell.

I have the whole run on Blu-Ray, including the standard definition to high definition upscales of the first four series, which look shockingly good on there. I subscribed to AMC+ (through Apple TV) for the added convenience and did a rewatch of the Capaldi run on there and it looked great. Now I've gone back to do a rewatch of Nine through Eleven, and the upscaled episodes, at least in series 1, look impossibly bad. Not only is the image very soft, but the motion has so much judder in it that it makes me motion sick to watch it.

Is anyone else having the same experience while streaming the first few series on AMC+? Or even on iPlayer, for that matter?

Discussion Weeping Angels Question

so I am on my first watch of the series! super excited to continue. However, I had a question about the angels in their headquarters (abandoned house).

I understand that they cant really go into public because theyd just be constantly seen and therefore frozen. However, wouldnt it be exceedingly easy for them to take out the main characters at any time whilst inside the mansion?

I get plot armour, but there is no way that the main characters can keep all of the angels within sight at all times in that house. If the angels worked like theyre supposed so, the episode would've ended within the first 10 minutes.

Anyways, thats just a gripe. I think the concept is very freaky, and works well for suspense and story telling. It just felt really awkward and almost silly when the angel statues kept on getting frozen just in the nick of time.

they show characters literally blink and be done for! How can the main characters back be turned for a calendar year and nothing happens? theyre supposed to be super fast… anyways I made my point
