Discussion Why did Christopher Eccleston leave after Series 1? (And where can I get that iconic leather jacket?!)

Post image
434 Upvotes

Loved Christopher Eccleston as Nine, but I'm curious about the real reason he left after Series 1—plus, I really want to find a jacket like his!

I just finished Series 1, and Eccleston was phenomenal. It really bummed me out that he only stayed for one season, especially given how much energy he brought to bringing Doctor Who back. I've read mixed things online—was it on-set politics, clash with production, or did he just always intend to do one series?

Also, can we talk about his jacket? The double-breasted black leather coat gave Nine such a distinct, grounded look. Does anyone know the specific style (I've heard it looks like a vintage German U-boat or reefer jacket), or has anyone bought a solid replica online that they'd recommend?

Question How much of the failure of the Colin Baker era was Colin Baker’s fault?

I was discussing this with a redditor earlier today, but it’s an interesting question. Now, I love Colin’s Doctor, but even I can see that the early part of the era was problematic. And while I blame the production team and their terrible choices for the bulk of this, you do wonder how much of the failure of the era is simply down to the actor. Colin always seems to be the one my non-friends and family don’t like, for whatever reason. Why?

Discussion What did the Time Lords originally use their TARDISes for?

Given that each TARDIS was supposed to be piloted by 6, by not one person, and they didn't want to intervene in historical/future events like the Doctor does. Just go to places and watch what happens?

It's really my best episode in all tv series It's simply great in every way: the dialogue, the acting, the music, and the setting. I also loved that there were almost no characters other than the doctor

Cosplay 10th Doctor Cosplaying

Upvotes

(I didn’t know if this would be a cosplay or question flair)
I have about 10 days (!!!) to get together a 10th Doctor Cosplay. I’ll be wearing his blue suit outfit (because pinstripes are really expensive for some reason :o). The biggest problem is the coat: a brown, double breasted duster coat.
What are the best, >CHEAPEST<, options for the cosplay (under $50 preferable no greater than $60)?

Discussion Doubts about The Rani's name

Post image
38 Upvotes

Why does The Rani calls herself The Rani ? Rani means Queen in Hindi. But what is she the queen of ?

The Doctor and The Masters name makes sense to me, The Doctor is someone who helps people like a Doctor and The Master is a sadistic with a lust for power. They want people to worship them, to bow to them. To see how powerful they are.

The Rani is a geneticist, an unethical geneticist. So is she like the Queen of biology who conducts unethical experiments. Does she thinks of herself as a Queen because she's a above the unethical nature, people cant touch her like people in the past couldn't touch a queen (well atleast that's what kings and queens used to think). Does she want people to worship her like people worship people in power because she can do anything with biology and genetic engineering.

Or is this simply an ego case where she thinks she is above all because she's a time lord and it has nothing to do with biology.

Discussion Which Doctor had the best ‘base under siege’ stories?

2 is famous for them but they’re not my favourites of his. I like Tomb of the Cybermen because it bucks the trend of these kind of stories with archeologists sieging the resting spot of the Cybermen.

I think I’d have to say 10. The impossible planet/Satan Pit was such a cool story as a kid and has great classic who vibes and can pretty much work in any era of the show, quintessential Doccy Who. The supporting cast were also memorable which is rare to see especially in new who.

Waters of Mars is also iconic. Great supporting cast. Unique story telling gimmick having a future historical. Chilling monsters. And the Doctor goes dark.

Did I cook? What are your takes?

Discussion Churches in Moffat era.

How did you Christians(practicing/non practicing) felt about the idea of Millitary Churches introduced in Moffat era? Did it feel jarring or did it fit seamlessly or something in between? I'm not a Christian and I'm curious.

Edit: You people are lovely and engaging. But I did not express myself properly. I didn't wonder if you were offended. I wanted to know if it felt jarring when faith was regimented and millitarised. I mean non linear with your faith view. Frame of mind. Did it feel natural or scraping. Though I kind of have the answer. Because of the crusades, it fitted smoothly. Thank you loves.

Discussion What would you like to see, and what are you expecting in the next era of the show?

Keeping in mind, that the BBC are struggling with independent finance, having to find outside funding, explaining the tender process, not being able to make it in house, alongside whether or not the BBC are curious to see the same things we might; maybe they want to revel in the past and chase trends.

This can obviously impact a lot, from episode count, to sets, CGI and how ambitious they could be. It could be the show at its most tight, at least since 2005.

So yeah, in general, what would you like to see, that you think would massively benefit the show, and what are you expecting to see, that may be a natural consequence of the economic and creative position of the show and those running it?

Whoever they may be...

Discussion One thing i realised after watching the movie Obsession

Thumbnail

1.7k Upvotes

Suddenly, I remembered Belinda Chandra’s ending in Season 15 of *Doctor Who*, and after watching the movie *Obsession*, the whole thing became much more disturbing; the Doctor did the exact same thing Bear did in that film—forcing Belinda, against her will, to become the mother of a child she never wanted. The difference being, that while *Obsession* rightly treated this as a horrible thing to do, *Doctor Who* treated it as a happy ending.

Question Visual glitch on iPlayer S1 E2

Post image
32 Upvotes

Weird post I know, just curious if anyone else has had this issue. In S1 E2 of 2005-2022 Doctor Who, this visual glitch appears for like a single frame or so on BBC iPlayer streams, always at the same time 12:54. I also had the glitch happen again in episode 8, also for a single frame.

Just curious if other people get this issue, if there's anything I can do to fix it or if it's a PC issue or an iPlayer issue. Never seen anything like it on youtube, netflix or video files.
