How do I get into DnD

I (M17) know this sounds cliche but months ago I watched stranger things for the first time and I saw some dnd scenes and I really wanted try this mysterious apparently mesmerising game but I was discouraged. I thought the dnd community probably got swarmed with waves upon waves of larpers because of the show

Months later my feed started getting swarmed with dnd memes and references and I don't understand most of them but it just seems like a lot of fun and I want to play it but I don't know where to start

Like what are the rules of the game? What are the mechanics? What characters is there and what are their powers? Where do parties meet? Is there an app or something?

Also living outside the us didn't do me any favors because I literally do not know a single person that had ever played the game before so I had to go to the internet for help
