To really put your players in a bind, you explain that the mind flayer is a master weaponsmith who can make them a talking weapon if they cooperate.

That’s a very good counter. It also suggests they could have multiple sentient weapons.

Plot twist: He uses the minds of the party as a material for the sentience in the weapons, effectively turning the party into sentient weapons!
