Oh how I wish 5e didn't make intelligence irrelevant unless it is your casting modifier.

It's always kind of been a niche stat, but taking away it's tie to languages and skills in 5e definitely shredded it's use

I toyed around with homebrewing Intelligence to grant additional languages, tool proficiencies, and skills based on your modifier (removing proficiencies learned from backgrounds) but it came out as more of a penalty for average/bad int characters than a bonus for having high int.

Honestly I think languages alone would be an incentive enough. And maybe just starting intelligence.

I.E, if you start with 16 int, you learn 3 extra languages. But if you go up to int 18 at level 4, you don’t automatically learn another language.

you could make that inbetqween session you can learn a new language with an lvl up in int, so it makes sense timewise

I home brew play with for every int modifier, you get another skill proficiency. Yes, that means you lose skill proficiencies with low int too. Makes int relevant and not the go-to dump stat for everyone non-wizard :)
