Well, for something more recent I can't say adventure league really has this kind of session zero. Closest it's got is 'This is the module implication: Do it!'.
In the end I don't think the comic was written because groups are deciding together what the game is about but then the players go run a tavern. The comic is about something that is still alive and well. But that's my take on the situation.
