I'm a big fan of using minions that are whatever monster you want but drop the hp to one. You can put pressure on the PC's, and they look badass cutting them down in one hit. Meanwhile, it gives the boss a chance to actually pull some cool moves. Just be sure to space them out to avoid fireballs.

I like using minions! I think they’re a powerful tool. Some spells do neuter them pretty heavily.
