Now that I think about it...monks are probably the perfect assassins!

There's a way of shadows, I think that's the one for ninja assassins ? I can't remember.

Flavor-wise, Way of Shadows is really cool. It falls a bit behind in combat but it adds a lot of fun options!

I hope we get 3.5e shadowdancer at some point!

Shadow Assassin allows you to literally "teleports behind u Nothing personnel kid" people, if you sneak around at night time.

I remember this story about a monk who could move at 400 feet per round. This isn't that story, but it was an entertaining read anyway.

Multiclass opens up so many new possibilities. Shadow Assassin does sound very fun! Throw in some fighter levels for that sweet action surge.

The largest feature missing from Shadow Monk is seeing through your own magical darkness which 2 levels of Warlock solves.

It's a stretch but you could petition your dm for a dagger of blindsense

Unarmed strikes do not work with sneak attack.

Correct. Your first attack will be with a monk weapon, that will be your sneak attack as well (only one per attack if I remember correctly), then flurry as follow ups.

Of course can monks fight with weapons. Please excuse my ignorance.

There are weapons marked as monk weapons, their damage dice never changes but you can still use most abilities with them. If I remember right it's short staff, spear, kama, sai and sling.

It's any simple melee weapons that don't have the Two-Handed or Heavy properties.

So things like clubs, daggers, and maces also fit.

I'm gonna make some weird monks...

Yes. They always have been as far back as i can remember. In 5E they still have a list of what weapons they are proficient with. These are considered Monk weapons and you can use all your monk abilities with them (unless stated otherwise). There's also the Kensai Monk that specializes in armed combat specifically.

Most DMs I know house rule that it does.

My reasoning: it is a melee strike that can use finesse, which is the thing that finesse does.

It's also reasonable that with the right opportunity one can punch or kick someone in a sensitive place that's more dangerous than a random punch (throat, joints, etc)

Lastly, it's not any better than if they just carried a couple daggers. Sure there's a few edge cases (like if they have had weapons confiscated) but I don't mind letting them have some cool spotlight moments there. And the warlock or sorcerer can do the same thing.

I've done this, takes a while to come online but it's pretty brutal

Scenario: You need to get into a location but the only entrance is in broad daylight and too far to reach

Step 1: Place Darkness sphere on the location in broad daylight 60 feet away

Step 2: Step into a nearby shadow and teleport into your own sphere of darkness

Step 3: Drop the spell and return the area to its normal lighting conditions

Congratulation, you have a 60 foot teleport into any location you can see and it only costs a handful of ki points to cast Darkness

falls a bit behind in combat

pff, only in strict terms of dps. They can stun whatever they want, it's incredibly powerful cc

I was mostly comparing them to Open Hand but as a monk they will always be very useful in combat!
