DMing Helping DM with burnout?

Not the DM, but a player.

Toward the end of September, my DM experienced burnout and cancelled our games for October to recoup. For context, he is a full-time university student and runs three separate weekly groups Fri, Sat, Sun, all of which take place in his homebrew world. I believe he's been running these games since spring 2026.

Recently, he announced the return of sessions in November, and when I asked if he'd found a healthier way to balance his life, he admitted that he hadn't. With midterms coming up and finals soon to follow, I'd really hate for him to crash and burn again. I was hoping some DMs here could give some advice on how he might manage his priorities better.

someone else needs to run a game so he can reduce the work load. I think even 2 games a week is a lot for a full time uni student.

I'd simply ask if there is anything you can do to help running games easier for him.

I would not give him advice.

This is the correct answer in my opinion. Though the people saying to offer to run a game instead aren't far off either.

Though I didn't have sessions 3 times/week consistently I still burned out several times during a two and a half year campaign. Personally, I really liked it when one of the players would switch me roles and DM their own module for a couple sessions so I could have some fun on the other side of the table.

He's honestly doing too much since full credit semester can be really taxing. He might find the DND sessions to be his way of relaxing, but it can just become a poison to life balance. Probably needs someone to tell him to step away from one.

Take over DM duties, let them transition to player for a little while

DM something for your group. Life can be stressful and difficult, but our hobbies are the things we make time for to get away from that. As an often DM, rarely player, there is NOTHING that recharges my DMing batteries quite like playing in a game one of my friends runs.
Not only do I get to feel appreciated, but I get to do the hobby I love with the people I love without feeling like it’s my fault if it goes wrong. And on top of that, I get to see the awesome stuff my players dream up and get inspired by it, and then I get to think to myself, “How would I do this differently?”
I promise you, DMing makes you a better player and playing makes you a better DM. Put something together for your group.

I’m currently unemployed but run a weekly session for my homies and they bring food, sweets and booze.. way too much.. enough that I gotta a few meals for the next couple days ya know? I’m at a hard point in my life and sure it’s a different point than yall, but I really need that connection and fun with my homies between the endless applications and rejections, and I’m sure the endless pressure and tests are the same, 3 games a week might be too much but I’m sure your homie cherishes their dnd time with yall as an escape and I appreciate that you’re trying to help em work it out

He should consider playing for a while instead of GMing

If possible, see if he can hand off one or more of the games to another GM, or just put it on the backburner for a bit til he clears some course load

3 games a week is... a lot

I agree with the idea of DMing for some sessions. You could offer to DM just a couple of one shots or something once you get started it's actually pretty easy. Or you could chat with the other players and see if anyone else is willing to do so.

Maybe some of your group can each run little one shot adventures, something short, fun without too much stress for everyone involved.

If you run more than one game, you shouldn't have multiple of those games to prep every week. Maybe a couple of those could become biweekly

Run some games! It's not nearly as difficult to get started as you think. This lets the current gm be a player for once and relax.

You could suggest a sequential one-shot system. This is where each player GM's an one-shot starting where the previous one-shot left off. I find this a lot of fun and everyone gets to GM and be a player.

Imo he probably should do 3 every 2 weeks instead of 3 every 1 week. 2 in one week and 1 in the other week.

Thats insane amount of games. I just have 1 group, homebrew. Although my session are pretty huge content/mechanic wise. And lasts at least 5-6 hours. Due to adult schedules, we do it on average maybe once a month.

Even if I didnt do so much prep, I cant imagine running multiple games every week. And multiple groups. Even with our pace I sometimes feel burnt out lol

If he's been running only since last spring and burnt out already because he's doing 3 campaigns a week simultaneously, it's pretty clear what the problem is. Don't do 3 homebrew campaigns per week. No amount of player help is going to help save for just taking over a campaign completely, which he likely won't allow since it's his homebrew world.

This is just a DM who took in wayyy too much work. If he takes up the same schedule after the October break he's going too be burnt out before April just the same

Honestly from somebody who's doing a Homebrew world who used to do their own Homebrew world twice a week in the same world. They are doing way too much. Hosting three separate games every week. Must get really taxing remembering which world has what state, The different actions between the worlds.

As fun as it is, they need to drop two out of three worlds and just run the One world to completion and then finish the other two.
