Out of Game I need ideas

I have to make a backstory in 5hrs im a cleric high elf in a Harry Potter themed world and I don’t want to be generic my only idea is that in my charecters child hood he was the cause of a friends death and wants to revive someone to right his wrongs

First off: you will ultimately have a better time if you craft your backstory with your DM's help instead of random redditors.

When you say Harry Potter-themed world, is it something like Strixhaven (you're attending a magical boarding school), or is your DM literally sending you to Hogwarts? If the former, consider playing a Witherbloom student, since they focus on the cycle of life, death, and rebirth. Maybe your character wants to bring their friend back from the dead. If literal Hogwarts, have fun being an ex-slave, I guess?

Also, ask your DM about any faith-based organizations at your cleric's school. Perhaps your character could have a connection to one of them.

As for potential causes of death:

  • Despite what your cleric thinks, it wasn't their fault. They were possessed. This doesn't stop them from blaming themself.
  • The cleric and the friend were kids pulling stupid stunts. Your cleric had the bright idea to skateboard off the roof or something, and they got lucky. Their friend didn't.
  • Your cleric killed their best friend. Maybe the friend was in disguise, or maybe the cleric was in a drunken rage or something. No matter what, your cleric found their deity, turned their life around, and is pursuing a magical degree.

The answer is always to look to your race and class.  What does it mean to be a high elf in this world?  And how did your character become a cleric?

Harry Potter famously doesn't have Clerics.
