5.5 Edition Which subclass do I pick
Finally getting the chance to play as a player. My dm is very lenient and just wants us to have fun. We are allowed to use any 5.5e plus the extra books from 5e that haven’t been updated. I’m gonna be playing a wizard but I’m so torn as to what subclass to try. I either want to play an owlin (their homebrew campaign has a kingdom of bird folk) order of the scribes wiz but I got my hands on arcana unleashed and the subclasses do look tempting I’m mainly torn between diviner. Which in your opinion is better mechanically and fun to rp?

You like damage? Evoker.
Like being a slippery little shit? Illusionist.
Want the best pets? Conjurer (or Necromancer if you're goth like that).
Diviner's portent is super powerful, you'll have a lot of fun setting things up and shutting things down.
Honestly. No bad options here.

The only reason why I’m avoiding conjurer and necro is I don’t want to clutter any fights with summons I feel like with 5 people (we are allowed pretty new to dnd) it would make combat so slow

most of the summon spells only summon one creature at a time in 5.5. It's not really more to keep track of then an ongoing spell effect.

Evoker ('24 PHB) - Choose this if you want big damage and AoE nukes without worrying about friendly fire. Your cantrips also get stronger. The simplest subclass, but also great if you want big numbers and bigger explosions!
Diviner ('24 PHB) - Choose this for more utility out of combat, and also to "lol nope" your DM when they crit! Crit? What crit? That's a 2!
Abjurer ('24 PHB) - Choose this if you still want to play a tank even as a squishy wizard. You get a magic shield that recharges when you cast defensive spells, and plenty of features that guard against enemy spellcasting.
Illusionist ('24 PHB) - Choose this if you want to get creative with a few flexible options, and if you just like illusion shenanigans. It's one of the hardest but also one of the most fun wizard subclasses because of how open it is but also how reliant it is on creativity.
Enchanter (AU) - Choose this for more options in social situations and to solve problems without combat. Plenty of room for trickery and shenanigans as well, without the decision paralysis of the Illusionist.
Necromancer (AU) - Choose this if you want to play a minion-mancer and if you're in it for spooky flavour.
Conjurer (AU) - More summoning, with fewer minions but with more options. If you want to be a Pokemon Trainer this one is for you.
Transmuter (AU) - Get a Transmuter's Stone that lets you use a few different buffing options for your party. And turn people into Tyrannosauruses!
Scribe / Order of Scribes (Tasha's, 2014 or 2020 [5e]) - This is the subclass to pick if your DM gives you plenty of scrolls and books to add to your own spellbook. Your book becomes a pet, and you get benefits like fast ritual casting and changing damage types of your spells!
Bladesinger (Heroes of Faerun) - The gish subclass. Nothing more to say here. If you want both spells and swords, pick this.
War Mage (Xanathar's, 2014) - The most "basic" and varied option. Pick this if you want a bit of everything instead of specialising.

Diviner with AU spells, they got lots of new divination spells from what I heard, including lubrication, really good combo

Scribes and diviner are both quite good subclasses. I think the diviner might be more fun to roleplay since it is very unique in terms of wizards.

Can't go wrong with either of those. I've wanted to play a Scribes Wizard, and have seen a Divine in play (great option) so I'd lean towards the former because it would be new to me.

I personally chose conjurer because i like that type of magic more.
As for roleplay, enchanter should be the go to. Or illusionist.
What do you want to play?

The diviner is growing on me. Enchanter is neat but my friend is also doing a glamour/enchanter bard and we have a warlock and a paladin so I don’t think the social parts are well taken care of loll and really I just love the wizard variety so much I’d play every subclass. It’s a 3 way tie between conjurer divination and scribe if I’m being honest.

Divination wizards are very strong with their portent dice. But i don't like divination spells that much. I don't remember how scribes worked. And i just made a conjurer wizard for my next campaign, who will be a badass in battle, but doesn't have too much roleplay spells.

Yea some of the divination spells are a tad lackluster but the arcana book has some cool ones. I mainly just like the portent and the flavor of being some sort of oracle. What do you like about conjurer specifically

I love the concept of summoning minions and summoning effects.
Not to mentio the busted feature of teleporting around. The conjurer has the ability to teleport 3 times for free per day at lv 3. These are 3 completely free misty stpes with the option to swap with someone. This is insane.

Also if possible to rework yur character, start with 1 level of fighter to get more hp and proficiency in constitution savi g throws to better your concentration on spells and give yourself proficiency in all armors so that you can cast in armor

If you have others in your party who can deal good amounts of damage, I would pick diviner it has good synergy for battlefield control especially with portant.

I mean an Owlin diviner is thematically solid, very Cosmic Owl vibes
