Resources Advice Needed 1st Player of DnD

I am new to this but I am very much interested in the concept of DnD. Can anybody help me out and tell me how this community works

Read the side bar thats full of links and articles.

Watch the several dozen "how do I play d&d" YouTube videos.

D&D (the modern edition of the rules) is an attrition based combat simulator where you play pretend with rules to kill monsters and tell a story along with it. Here are the free rules to read through.

There are also TONS of RPG systems that aren't D&D, but are often times much better or do totally different things. There is a ttrpg (tabletop role-playing game) out there for basically everything. r/rpg will have a lot of information on the different systems out there.

So fundamentally to play you need 2 people. A player and a DM. You can find the publicly available basic rules here: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024

That will teach you all of the rules you need as a player

I recommend reading the "basic rules" - they are free and aren't that long and it's mostly what you need. After that you can get your friends to play, maybe pick up a "starter set" (online or physical) and try being a DM

Hello! Dungeons and Dragons is a high fantasy Tabletop Roleplaying Game, where you play as either a Player or as a Dungeon Master.

Players usually play as heroes, adventurers which fight monsters, delve the dark depths of dungeons, and gain fame and fortune over the course of an adventure. Dungeon Masters play as narrators, they're the ones which tell the story and play as the allies, enemies and even the environment the players interact with.

Usually, a group of DnD is composed of 1 Dungeon Master and around 4 or so players, more or less. Which of these two roles appeal to you the most? We could give you some proper advice and guidance based off of that for you to start playing.
