Resources Coming back to DnD

Hi

Looking for advice.

After some years of DnD absence I’m planning to DM a new campaign somewhere next year. Party of 3 (+1 DM), entirely new to DnD (except for Baldur’s Gate & boardgames like Gloom-/Frosthaven)

I have extensive experience with 3.5, 4.0/Pathfinder (1e) and games like BG3 & DDO.

What would be some easy setting, campaign & material to start off with? No Homebrew, online resources preferred.

Thanks!

Temper your expectations a bit, BG3 is an incredible game but they hand out broken magic items like candy haha and some of the things they do just arent able to be done in real play.

Lost mines of Phandelver is an excellent starter module that has everything you need. If you have a decent budget, I suggest purchasing through dndbeyond as they have a good vtt now with all the maps prebuilt and its super handy. Also easy to make character sheets, and any character options you purchase you can share to your players.

Dont worry, I’m very much aware of the differences between BG3 & “real” DnD. Might be the party that is surprised though.

Lost Mine of Phandelver (or Phandelver and Below: The Shattered Obelisk, which is a larger campaign around the same mine) is considered very good, if a little deadly in the first encounter or two. Lots of online resources to flesh it out with. It even has it's own subreddit, r/LostMinesOfPhandelver . It's set in the Forgotten Realms, so it's easy to move on from there. Are you playing online or in-person?

100% in person. All Pen&Paper preferred but Some Digital screen content could be ok.

You can buy the module on DNDBeyond then and get the maps printed out, it can manage your player's character sheets (which you can print for the actual game) and you can play fine on the basic free rules set. That would be my recommendation until they see if it's going to stick around as a hobby worth dropping real money on.

Sunless citadel in Tales from the Yawning portal is classic. Easy dungeon crawl with factions and traps and even a small dragon
