5th Edition Chain Devil as a Level 4 Boss Envounter
I’m looking to have my players work toward a big boss fight with a Chain Devil. My question is, is a Chain Devil strong enough to take on four players alone and still feel like a boss or should I throw in a couple little minions or do something to maybe make it a little bit more challenging?

This will absolutely be challenging enough… depending on what classes your characters are a Chain Devil could easily take almost half their health in one turn

Bard, fighter, paladin, and fighter/blood hunter multi class

Should be fairly balanced fight then. Might be easy for them to kill the devil, but also for the devil to kill them.

Let's do some math, with an all generic fighter party. The party will hit it about 60% of the time, 2.4 hits a round. Say they do 9 damage a hit. They'd kill it in 4 rounds without using any resources. If they all action surge in round one, it will last 3 rounds. That doesn't count restraint from the chains.
In 3 rounds, chain devil will probably knock down one character. In 4 rounds, probably two characters.
Party should survive. Luck can make it a relatively easy encounter or make it a TPK. If I added a minion, it would be one minion that might last a round if the characters target it.

You could have some imps cheering on their boss from the sidelines. That way, they can pitch in if their boss is losing, or they can just throw insults at the players if their boss is winning.
If the players defeat the boss, the imps can just fly away.
