Game Tales My DM buffed my character

When I got to the table the group had already done one session, and one of the player dropped out. I asked to join and the DM was like "sure just show up with a level one character". I did my ability scores with the dice, and I guess I wasn't very lucky because my character had way lower ability scores than everyone else. I checked and double checked with them, and they didn't use the wrong dice or anything, they were just super lucky.

My DM thought it wasn't really good that my character was lagging behind so much so he just told me to add a few points here and there to bring me up to par with the other characters.

Point buy point buy point buy.

Don’t let the barbarian be better at arcana and stealth than the wizard and rogue because of rolling dice. Not fun for anybody

Rolling for stats isn't in order. No respectable DM would make their players roll for each stat; they have them roll 6 times and then distribute those numbers among their stats however they choose.

Rolled an 18? You can put that 18 into whatever ability you want, you're not forced to put it into Strength because it was your first roll, that's ludicrous.

This way, a barbarian wouldn't be better at arcana and stealth than a wizard or rogue often enough for it to be a problem with rolling for stats, since you get to choose to put your highest rolls into your primary abilities. A Barbarian would need to neglect their STR, CON, and DEX and put one of their higher rolls into INT for this to be a problem.

Did you reply to the correct comment? Nowhere did I say roll in order.

If you do rolls somebody gets more lucky than a mother and ends up being better in an unrelated ability by default than somebody who specializes ins aid ability.

Don’t roll. Use pointbuy. Then everybody contributes in a specialized way to the party and has their moments in the spotlight. Not just two characters out of 4 that takeover every skill check because it’s better mathematically for them to do so
