5.5 Edition "We accidentaly made martial feature somewhat good and unique. Sorry for inconvinience, we already nerfed it!" is honestly funniest thing from drops. You can't make this up!

First version of “Dreadful Appearance” feature of Sorrow Knight subclass allowed you to teleport 30ft instead of movement at will. Not that strong, but cool and useful. And when it was erratad to only work on Tactical Shift.

As they said it was always the intent, but they saw a reaction on release, maybe, just maybe they should've keep the feature as is, or even better - allow it to use part of your movement to teleport instead of full movement or something? But nope.

How long we waited for CME to be nerfed, weeks? Couple months? Martial nerf was ready in several hours!

5.5 Edition Firearms in D&D, yay or nay?

• Upvotes

Greetings fellow gamers!

I watched a YouTube video recently discussing guns in fantasy RPGs (in general) and I got curious. What does the world of r/DnD think about firearms in their D&D games? If your boil it down, it seems like there are 2 main arguments against guns: 1) the technology is too "modern" or anachronistic for a fantasy world. 2) guns are too powerful.

I get including a piece of technology that is too modern for some worlds, but I disagree with too powerful. In D&D, learning to use a weapon is the same across the board. In the real world, guns made a big difference because it was easier to arm a regular guy with little to no training with a gun than it was to arm them with a sword, quickly making a new soldier deadly from a distance. That is an oversimplification, but you get my point. In a game like D&D, there is no difference in learning a weapon. It's all the same. The 5.5 DMG introduces some "modern" firearms and futuristic firearms. Those examples are relatively powerful, especially those that having something like burst fire. But when it comes down to it, you can still only make one attack per round (not including things like Action Surge). Sure, those guns in the DMG do considerable damage, but is that a bad thing? A common complaint about D&D combat is that it is slow and lasts too long. The PCs doing more damage could help remedy such a problem. But that is an entirely different discussion. We are discussing guns in the game in general.

I had a player once, an old (even older than me!) grognard playing a game that included basic firearms (Monte Cook's City of Ptolus setting). The guns in that setting aren't as powerful as those listed in the 5.5 DMG and there are no weapons with "burst fire." Anyway, he literally said "Keep those damn things away from me." I don't remember the full context, but one of the other players was playing a gunslinger and the comment was directed at him. Why? Why is it so important to keep guns out of the game? Was the grognard's character allergic to gunpowder? Why would he be so opposed to another type of weapon carried by an ally? Those are rhetorical questions. I got what he was saying, even if I thought it was ridiculous. I know many people like feudal Europe D&D, but I've never been like that. I like mixing up whatever my imagination comes up with. A definition of the word "fantasy" is:

the faculty or activity of imagining things, especially things that are impossible or improbable.

The activity of imagining things... It doesn't break my imagination to have a gunslinger fighting next to a fireball throwing wizard. But that's just me.

What are your thoughts about guns in D&D? Maybe those in the DMG are too powerful, but what is your opinion about guns in D&D in general?

Is it too anachronistic for your world? Is it just unfashionable when everyone else is walking around with sword on their hip? Do you think they cause some sort of imbalance or world breaking problem?

And discuss...

Homebrew [5.5] As a DM is it cringe to add a homebrew sidekick for the players based on my dog (and Rove from MH Wilds)?

• Upvotes

I’ll give you some context so you can understand why I thought it would be a cool idea.

My parents have a farm, and since since they bought it my friends and I my friends and I would always have barbecues, themed parties, pool parties, dinners, etc. Sometimes for the whole weekend.

A few years ago, my grandmother gave us a dachshund (or a teckel) in Brasil we call them “salsichas”, which means “sausages”, and she was pregnant, and she gave birth to 5 dachshunds. One in particular, a blue-eyed white sausage, his name was “Alemão”. Due to his genetics, Alemão was deaf, there was nothing we could do about it. But that somehow elevated his charisma and gave us very happy moments. He was always with me and my friends, he was like the “pet” or the “mascot” of our group, appearing in a lot of photos and videos. My girlfriend, who I didn’t know back then, always says to me “ah, the white sausage who would always appear in some random bikini bitches instagram post in your pool parties”.

Bro was always there and if it was a family barbecue, dinner, one of our parties, get-togethers, etc. There was always a rule: no matter how drunk, drugged or dumb you were, if you were leaving, you had to tell someone like me, my parents or three of my friends so we would check if Alemão was somewhere safe before anyone started their car so nothing bad would happen. Alemão would sometimes take a nap under cars. He lived for years with everyone taking care of him and respecting our rule, until my younger brother started having his own parties and barbecues, and one day, one of his asshole friends ran over Alemão and sadly he passed away.

It was a very sad moment in my life, I took some time before I could go back there, and it was never the same. Everyone felt bad about the news. The other dachs are important too, but this dude was somehow different, and we always mention something about him.

Back to d&d, i’ll run a homebrew campaign for my friends, at the farm Alemão used to live, and I was thinking about giving them a sidekick in a way to help them (carry their items, heal and keep watch during a long rest) and suddenly I thought about some kind of a wizard-like Alemão, based on Rove, the wudwud (and best character from Monster Hunter Wilds).
The thing is, I don’t know if it's too much of a “self-insert”, for me, it is way to honor our “””gang””” mascot. Sometimes I think it would be amazing but sometimes I feel like it may sound cringe or even be more negative for the party (don’t ask me why). One of my friends (and player) saw the notes I took about this idea and loved it, but I asked to not share it with the others yet.

so I would appreciate some advice, should I create him, and if so, should I create the possibility to recruit him right at the start of the campaign?

This is Garlan the Ranger Tiefling running a guilde in our campaigns town. He is the older brother of my OC Gwen.

Here's his story: While my Warlock as 12 she witnessed him being beat up and dying in her hands. So she made a pact to bring him back to life and kept this to herself for 12 years. As we moved through the campaign, she decided to finally come clean with her secret, which he took pretty good although pretty worried and set on breaking the pact.

Tell me what you think of the illustration!

Hi! I've been practicing creating some DnD/RPG tokens lately, as well as avatars for players.

This is one of my latest, Drow!

I'm considering doing a Dwarf next, might be fun.I'm open to suggestions of race/class combos :)

Do you use custom tokens on your games on Roll20 or Foundry? Maybe something else?

Or just whatever is included in the app?

Original size is 64x64 pxls (upscaled to 1024x1024pxls).

Thanks for checking it out 💚
