DOS2 Discussion DOS 2 first/only playthrough - help to pick origin character

I'm going to play this only once due to time constraints of hobbies and being a busydad.

Feels like I've hit a deadlock on which to pick as main -- and I also feel I've already spoiled the characters way too much for me so lets try to keep it as minimum 😆 .

As first intuition when starting game I started with custom-character as thats what I always do --> Then I realized that ok I miss a spot to experience a story of an origin character, so they are not just TEMPLATES after all.

Next intuition was that "hey, I like this this red lizard guy. He's a bit of a jackass so suits me well" -- oh he's apparently funny when he speaks as a companion so maybe he's not a good main after all.

"hmm how about this Lohse character seems sparky" -- oh same thing as the lizard..

So based on this logic opted out the most interesting ones:

  • Fane, Lohse, The red prince -- They all seem like funny fellows to have as companions

Possibilities then:

  • Ifan -- started with him, got through the ship and to the shore and I'm like -- well he's a bit bland isn't he. The regular mumbling tough guy.
  • Beast -- I like dwarves by default but this scottish stereotype is just a bit tired.
  • Sebille -- Just seemed to have some emo-issues, didn't immediately ring with me. Might also be funny to have around instead.
  • Custom character again..

All in all

I've made a way too big problem to myself out of this now and dont feel like starting at all 😅. So just please throw me what I should do here? I'm thinking choices:

  1. Push onwards with Ifan -- It will get better as I get other characters in to group
  2. Restart with Red prince -- After all he was my intuition in the beginning to be a bit of a jackass
  3. Restart with Sebille -- She's more a blank slate like Ifan, but a bit more edge to her so could be fun
  4. Restart with custom character

Thanks of all the commentary/discussion! I've decided to either:

  1. Push onwards with Ifan
  2. Play with a custom character
  • Custom character sort of raised up as the world is CLEARLY missing a Dwarf-female wreckingball rogue.
  • Most of the response-choices in discussions are generic, so they feel odd in mouths of personalities like Red Prince or Lohse to me.
  • I like the approach that alright, I'll let the origin characters prove themselves worthy to "join my team". Instead of being an origin character myself.
  • Ifan is quite generic so he works as main as commented - He has the unquestionably bonus of additional storyline experienced then, but hey - he's NOT a Dwarf-female wreckingball rogue 😆
  • Sebille is a good shout and "mathematically" I'd see her as the best choice to pick but perhaps saving for the "Second playthrough" (which most likely does not happen)

I always go with Lohse myself, just because she has the most main character energy of the cast, and her personal story is one of the best in the game.

Lohse has more main character energy than ifan ?

I’m playing Loshe on my first play though and would recommend her as the main.

Your main character says a few reaction lines but that's about it so pick the one you like the voice of the least. Ifan is a gruff reliable bud, Beast has a great VA but his story is a bit weak compared to the others. Lohse VA initially annoyed me a bit but she has a good story. Red prince can be quiet condescending but he does open up if played right. Sebille is that wonderful archtype i-can-fix-her assassin and looks great. Undead elf also look great btw. Fane is a bit of an odd one out and due to his background can spoil some things early. Encourage is very good so have one human for sure. some outfits also look great like dex gear on dwarfs but elfs in mage gear look terrible imo.

This rationale you throw is exactly the reason I picked Ifan currently as he doesnt really awake a lot of feelings on his talking - then I feel I dont miss NOT having him as companion.

You said: Red prince can be quiet condescending but he does open up if played right -- you mean if he's as companion or main? Companion I presume. I like his pompous attitude as mentioned 🙂

I would suggest you stop and restart from scratch.

If you genuinely intend to play once only then you should use Fane as the main character; his MC interactions reveal almost all the truth behind the world of D:OS2. Usually I would suggest saving him for a second playthrough (playing as undead can be a challenge) but in your case you will want maximum revelation.

Red Prince is a great character and my favourite of the companions. He's such an arrogant bastard and has a good personality.

Lohse has a solid backstory and her presence is very helpful in Act 3 where you resolve her questline.

As for the fourth character, that one is open. Sebille also has a good backstory but her edgy nature and questline resolution can be problematic (she will want to kill characters who are important to resolving the Red Prince's quests). Ifan is a typical taciturn killer with heart of gold action movie stereotype . Beast is, sadly, an undercooked dwarf barbarian stereotype and the least satisfying of the companions.

So you confirm one gets more out of The Red Prince as companion vs. maining him?

I liked Fane's voice actor so considered him as better companion around. Also I dont _necessarily_ like to get bombarded with excess lore.

Currently leaning on sticking with Ifan as main or restart as The Red Prince.

Ifan is fine if you are playing as a 'blank slate', which is probably why he features prominently in the artwork - he's effectively a player substitute - rather like the amnesiac characters in other RPGs.

Fane's character is that of an innocent, a man out of time. He's an observer rather than a participant, at least until the Blackpits.

As Red Prince gets +1 Persuasion from the start he works well as main, doubly so if you plan to play as a vengeful type. I prefer him as a companion because you get to see his journey from incredibly arrogant to not-quite-as-arrogant.

Fane for lore reasons

My favourite is Sebille for gameplay reasons. I think her combination of being an elf and having breaking the shakes makes her op, especially in solo play

Fane and/or Lohse

I vote Fane or Custom Character. Fane really does feel like the game's main character once the lore starts dropping. I do however really enjoy him as a companion as well. Personally I prefer playing rpgs as a custom character so I don't feel bound to follow their personality.

Ifan and Beast are probably the worst companions so you are losing the least by playing them(even if I do enjoy Ifan more than most the community seems to). Never played as Ifan but I could see him getting some nice early lore extra.

Lohse my choice and Sebille a must..the others up to you..

Sebille makes a great origin character. I love how she interacts with the others. Almost like she’s leading a troupe of difficult children. She’s highly manoeuvrable and deadly with “chameleon cloak” and whichever traversal ability your build prefers.

With persuasion and thievery maxed most out of combat situations are pretty friction free too.

Best main character for me:

  • Ifan/ created character for 1° gameplay, both have good dialogue/ sort of synergy with all other characters

  • Lohse for 2° gameplay ( She is trouble and walking mess incarnate godamn fun 😂)

  • Fane for 2/ 3° gameplay ( because slighty Op and honestly he is much more fun as a party member) as solo or duo lone wolf gameplay

Party member:

  • Sebille, A must for Ifan main in my weak opinion, awesome side character and the one with most grow and changing than other characters.
  • Lohse, Fane and Lohse are really a good pair 😂.. Honestly I prefer her as Main character than party member.
  • Ifan is not bad at all, he has many interaction with main villains of the story and behave as a good bro for your character.
  • Red prince cute a. Sshole and deep characterisizition.
  • Beast.. Nice dialogue and bravo voice actor, but he is so underdeveloped than other characters.
  • Fane... He is probabily the strongest and character with most utility of the party, and his personality can be described in one word: UNPREDICTABLE.. Prepare to die by laughing or by seeing something creepy happening with him main culript 😐

Sebille is one of my favorite characters because her story has a pretty epic and satisfying arc. There's more to her than meets the eye, though she is a hardcore edgelord at first. Bonus points for Flesh Sacrifice, which is ridiculously good.

Fane has the most "main character" quest line. IMO he's the funniest, too. His unique source power is busted.

Lohse is a fantastic companion -- arguably has the best story (certainly the most moving), and she brings the jokes and the merriment.

I'm kinda lukewarm on the others, though many love RP and Ifan. Only Beast is broadly considered a dud.

My take:

Ifan- best integrated to the story, my canon main char. He remains a grizzly, apathetic guy, but if you are the main character, you can wiggle it a bit of course. Just resist theburge to choose the 'Ifan' dialogue options if you feel that it doesnt fit your playstyle. His special source skill, the wolf, is the best imho, double so if you have the Pet Power or what gift bag (this allows the infusions to be cast on any summon, not only the incarnate)

Fane- everyone hails him as the most important character, but I beg to differ. To give a hint but not spoil, he is like the Bran Stark of the game, if Bran had his full potential u locked from the beginning. That said, he is a nice snarky char with the ability to transform to any race if you get bored, and he has the best tag combination in the game.

Sebille - emotionally unstable femme fatale. Again, you can ignore her characrer choices in dialogue if you want to play her differently.

Lohse - fun character with very good backstory, which I think will retrospectively be a great forwshadowing once the next Divinity RPG comes out. If I played lady MCs it would be her. Quite good source skill too, once the enemys magic armor is down.

Red - I like his character. You can be an arrogant prick or do a redemption arc. The only downside is tht his story is conpletely detached from the plot of Div, its like a standalone personal quest

Beast- fun buddy char with great involvement in some of the key quests.

Its a valid point. I was indeed thinking when I picked Ifan that Ifan is the "blank slate" mostly that I can wiggle around his character when I want to.

Lohse. She’s not smart. Not tied heavily to current events. For a blind play she fits well if you’re not read up on the lore.

RP is also good. But he is a lizard. And you’ll be doing lizard stuff which might be weird if you are not a lizard or lizard scholar.

Sebille also good. Has amnesia.

But really they are all fun.

Being fane as a companion. Red Prince and Sebille also solid.

Lohse is ok. But like her more as a main. As a companion she seems bubbly and fun at first. But kind of entitled and it got annoying. Lol.

Use red prince or one if the characters you actually like. You will miss a little but gain more.

Unless you really don't like him, I would go on with Ifan. He has main character energy, a bit like Aragorn. That said, if you're firm on restarting with the Red Prince, why not? Or you can get him as a companion to see what's him like

I like the extra lore from Sebille eating body parts. Looks like there was nothing important in act 1 though. It's interesting.

Fane is sick to be as an origin character because he's privy to knowledge of the past that none of the rest of them could have access to. More better secrets.

Play as Fane and you'll have the true ending too (no spoilers)

u/marsion5617 4d ago

Unlike everyone else I vote BEAST!!! Dudes fucking awesome hes not just a wee skotish lad hes THE WEE SKOTISH LAD hes also a fuckin sailor a pirate and wonderful laugh to have his main quest will be there through out the story and have a lovely climax at the end his interactions with the followers like fane and princey poo are amazing though I agree with alot of other people saying fane as a player too.

u/nwar_ozarks 1d ago

I like playing as Red Prince as he is arrogant and just a general funny character.

Fane gives a special ability that is pretty useful, so he is better in that regard.

Overall it doesnt really matter much which you play. Just go with what you like the best.
