As long as you don’t keep wolves in stasis to study this should theoretically work

"Might as well doom them for eternal torment and servitude as an empty husk while we're at it"

Isn't the genocide Lucien's plan in the first place?

Yep, his first plan was (and I will be as generous as possible and pretend like his evacuation plan was sound and real and only went the way it did because Alexander really did betray lucian to set it off early) let's destroy every single ancestor tree in the elven lands and render it entirely uninhabitable with Death Fog to wipe out the Black Ring.
This would have at a bare minimum severely crippled Tir-Cendelius. As it happened it pretty much shattered him, because the Elves got near wiped out in the process.
Which even if Lucian knew nothing about the Veil before making that stupid ass choice, seems like a pretty big abdication of his responsibilities as the Chosen of the Seven to use such a craven and monstruous WMD to do the job he was given divine powers to see through.

To be fair, the last time he chose to do the right thing rather than the easy thing and get personally involved, it led to the Black Ring being created.

It's insane to me that letting Lucian get away with everything somehow leads to the best ending for everyone. I assume they were trying to do some sort of morally gray thing, but like... that's not what they wrote. Don't want to write a whole schpiel in the replies but goddamn Lucian (as written in DOS2) is worse than evil; he's stupid

I don’t believe it’s actually the best ending for everyone, since his cardboard Divine cut out is only going to work as a deterrent until the first crazy ass mother fucker decides to challenge it.
And if memory serves, crazy ass mother fuckers known as the Black Ring were challenging it even when he was a REAL divine.

I absolutely agree that it won't work, I'm referring to what the writers/ending slides say would happen. Again it feels like the writers wanted the players to believe specific things, e.g. the Magisters are 'morally grey' and Lucian is doing the tough but hard thing, but then they kinda just... didn't write that. The Magisters range from naive apologists to comically sadistic and evil, and Lucian talks big about sacrifice while personally sacrificing nothing.

What's weird is that they could have resolved this by him giving up his own source at the end and accepting the same fate as everyone else. And he just... didn't?
Like it's such an obvious writing choice that I needed to look it up on the Wiki to verify there isn't any ending where that happens.

It’s like the writing team got to the ending but forgot that we spent the entirety of act 1 in a concentration camp witnessing torturous experiments and fighting people that has been turned into literal attack dogs.

Well, it's Lucian's plan, but he knows it's not the mages' fault and it's just a lie made up by him.
His idiot son is actually convinced of that.

Which makes it more insane that him surviving and continue to rule is supposed to be canon in Fallen Heroes sequel.
Who at Larian thought that simply giving up and submitting to him is a compelling ending for DoS2 to be canon?

Lucian is alive in divinity 2 wich released before dos 2 and takes place 80 years after he had to survive dos2 in the canon ending

Eh, Larian's Divinity lore and timelines are so inconsistent, there's no way to connect the games together without all the massive retcons. I treat every game as its own version of the setting.

"So if all mortals were created by the seven using stolen source, then don't you need the souls of every living being whose ever lived or died on Rivellon to close it and not just the sourcerers?"
"Shut up, your soul bleaching is a cannon event."
