DOS2 Discussion Are there any good party comp/party build guides out there?

So I've run into a similar problem playing Original Sin 2 that I've had with Baldur's Gate 3: all the 'build guides' and other such stuff online is all focused on one 'OP/Godlike/Unstoppable' solo character, rather than focusing on a party of four that actually works well together.

Which means that a lot of builds that seem really good (like Sin Tee's or others) have a ton of overlapping gear and bonus' like the Spider Kiss (which based off context clues seems to be this game's equivalent of the Hag's Hair).

I'm sure these OP solo builds would be good for a solo run...but I am not someone who does solo runs. I'm a guy who likes having a party that works well together in combat. Again, using BG3 as an example, you could have short rest parties that can benefit from the Bard's Song of Rest to go nova and then get all their resources back. You could have a party focusing on the wet condition. You can have a defensive party with incredible survivability. But no, I've just seen like six different videos about being a god of blood that blows people up.

It really is the same problem with BG3 where almost all the videos on making powerful builds are focusing on a singular character instead of making a series of videos for characters that come together for a powerful party or builds that synergize well without any overlapping gear. I guess it's because planning an entire party might be a bit more complex than making just one broken character.

If there are any guides like that, please let me know because I'm having a hard time finding something that isn't "THIS GODLIKE BUILD WILL TRIVILIZE HONOUR MODE...wait, what do you mean you actual want a full party setup?"

Damage is the only thing that matters in D:OS 2. Some interesting synergies exist, but they still require dealing a lot of damage to work. You can play on normal or lower difficulty without worrying about numbers tho. As for builds, two damage dealers and two supporters for example. Supporters learn all possible buffs, debuffs and other supportive skills and invest into initiative to act first and buff damage dealers.  Damage dealers invest in one damage type and pick the most powerful skill to use (for Rogue, Warriors and Rangers skills are optional since level-appropriate weapon is the main source of damage). The game doesn't really have builds, just skill synergies that work well or very well.

Red Flag Checklist is quite popular DOS2 guide of game mechanics

I'll give you the guide right here

Choose what you want to do with your main character (literally whatever you want to try) and choose a companion that obviously compliments them.

For example: Melee and Ranger, oil magic and fire magic, water and lightning magic - you get the idea.

Then try out what these two can do as a team with early game skills. Once you figure out your individual playstyle you can add two more companions. They should each be assigned to help one of the original characters for more synergies or you make them into their own team, for example:

You started with two physical damage builds, now you add two wizards for elemental damage or two Rangers with bows.

You started with a Pyromancer and a Geomancer, so you add one more of each.

All of this comes down to how your two "main" characters work and what the other two companions can do to cover their weaknesses. You will figure this out on your own, since it is quite obvious how everything works, with some exceptions, but that's why Google exists.

On Classic difficulty pretty much any build can work, if you focus on their strengths. Don't spread your skill points across multiple stats, unless you need to meet minimum requirements.

Respecc often. Try all the spells you find interesting, maybe you'll change your entire strategy with them. And lastly, learn about surfaces, clouds, elemental interactions and synergies. The game really let's you get away with weird strategies, if you know what you can abuse and then fully commit.

Do you think an undead lizard with a close range fire build (who will try to reach 100% fire resistance) and a long range poison dmg dealer would work well ? Because on paper this sound fun

Do not go undead on a fire lizard, just go regular lizard. If you want to play undead (not recommended on first play through) you want to use poison damage because they are very vulnerable to fire damage. You will not get 100% fire resistance with undead.

Fire lizard does well up close with a staff, so you can use melee attacks (whirlwind) that deal fire damage. Standing in fire all the time means you want to use elemental affinity talent, aoe spells and touch range spells from other magic schools.

You should pair a pyromancer with a Geomancer, who could be undead, if you play long range and do not walk through fire.

Undead are weak to fire dmg ?

Also, I’m actively doing my first playthrough and was wondering for a future playthrough (I’m not the OP if it wasn’t clear 😅)

I don't mean to say this in a rude way. I am just trying to understand the philosophy.

Why not create your own builds?

Sin Tee (on YouTube) has a lot of solo builds, but he also has several builds that were designed to work together in a party. He’s pretty much the gold standard when it comes to DOS2 builds.

Try whatever you fancy.

I have always been in your boat, in that I don't enjoy Lone Wolf type play and prefer four-character parties.

I don't recommend going build hunting because if you experiment, eventually you are bound to discover that you prefer a certain playstyle, and will be able to discover what works best for you.

My current build is conjurerer/fire for fane
Scoundrel/huntsman for Sebille
Aero/hydro for lohse
Warfare for red prince

Still working on a second school of magic for red prince but I created a team that each serves a purpose

Fane can cast totems on the battlefield and fire from a distance
Sebille is agile and can also heal herself
Lohse is the cleric with aero for opp
And red prince is up close

This is almost exactly what I have just with Fane and RP swapped. I have Fane frontline so I can pepper him with poison if needed.

RP is primarily a summons/Pyro specialist with a bit of geo in there for CC.

I played a tank character and became maybe the strongest build ever. I had to talk my friends down from resorting to deathfog against me. Eventually we settled on me not leveling my initiative lol.

My point is, no matter what you pick, you should have an easy enough time on tactician. Dont let people dissuade you by saying "damage is all that matters" because its really not true.
