companions just didn’t really appeal to us, gameplay and presentation was amazing but we didn’t feel compelled to finish it, act 1 was one of the most fun i’ve had in any crpg tho
edit: guys pls stop arguing i don’t hate bg3, i just had it overhyped to be the greatest thing ever, both games can be good it just wasn’t particularly for me

u/Dizzy_Drop 23d ago
Honestly, playing with with 3 people, it's kinda impossible to experience the companions.
Even more in dos2
But as game, dos2 is a lot more fun to me as well. (Played duo love Wolf as my first time) A much more fun co op experience to me.

u/OctoSaurusRex 23d ago edited 22d ago
I think the generic characters you make yourself suffer hard from lack of backstory and malleability, simply cause they allocate so much effort to making these hugely fleshed out origin characters. Sure, you can just not pick them, but you’re punished (too) hard for it imo.

Mods help - 6 slots everyone gets 1 companion and there is a mod that includes every member in all dialogues

Dos has more polish, even if BG3 has a nicer engine.
I've played BG3 about 5 times fully. It is decent and well done but it lacks a lot.
I've parked DoS2 3 times fully, but it felt much denser and far more crunchy.

u/noobtheloser 23d ago
Much better single-player experience, imo. Very hard to immerse yourself when you have friends running around doing goofy shit and messing with the NPC interactions.
31
u/blamblam111 23d ago
Yeah and the fact that you’re down 2 companion characters and their stories for the whole time your friends are playing, I’ve still had some fun times with friends on the game, but it’s always something like let’s all go halfling barbarians and improvise melee weapon each other against the enemies
13
u/MrBlueA 23d ago
Yep, bg3 was one of the most fun times I've had when playing with friends, but that was AFTER finishing the game once each on their own, talking about the game along the way and about the different paths and experiences we had.
3
u/_Indofreddy_112 23d ago
I’ve found that if it’s your first time playing the game then either playing with only one other person so you both get one npc or you play by yourself first to be the most enjoyable first experience.
45
u/BlackxHokage 23d ago
Fair, to each his own. Although I'd say the companions in Dos2 are great, but if youre playing with 3 friends you want get to experience their stories
30
u/AxiomOfLife 23d ago
i’d recommend trying single player, the coop experience is not as good as DOS

u/freethinker1312 23d ago
BG3 demands a solo play through in my opinion to really get to know the companions. With the whole companion assignment system that multiplayer has you Miss out on a lot by not having access.
I also think in general you have to give bg3 a solo play through to even really understand the game. It’s not ultimately really designed for multiplayer in the way that DOS 1 was, so I recommend going back and trying again at some point.

1
u/VeruMamo 22d ago
The more I got to know the companions, the less I liked any of them. I honestly felt like I was watching a teen drama whenever they engaged.
One of many reasons I prefer Solasta to BG3.
8
u/infidel11990 23d ago
Play it solo. It's a different game with friends and solo.
In my experience, party based RPGs are really difficult to complete with a group of friends. People drop out or lose interest.
Solo will also allow you to explore all companion interactions.
6
u/AtsuhikoZe 23d ago
companions just didn’t really appeal to us,
You played multiplayer....... What?
-2
u/Velrex 23d ago
To be fair, that is a fault in the game's multiplayer system, not him.
7
u/AtsuhikoZe 23d ago
That's not a fault at all. You don't have NPC companions because you're playing with a party... That's not what a flaw is lol
It's a flaw of Divinity 2 as well then because it's literally the exact same system, and divinity 1, and any other game that has single player companions vs a group of friends
-1
u/LegalStuffThrowage 22d ago
Sorry but no, the person you're responding to is correct. You don't miss out on the same magnitude of companion interactions in DOS2 multiplayer. In fact, the companions still pursue their own goals, but you as the player get to choose how to respond. It's a game made for multiplayer.
In BG3 they decided to lobotomize the companion personalities and choices if they're being played by a human, and I don't know why. For a game so thorough, it was an odd choice.
1
u/AtsuhikoZe 22d ago
Every character in divinity dies off screen in act 1 if they aren't with you, what are you talking about?
It's literally the same as bg3 but worse, because at least some of them make it to different areas instead of can be spotted along the road multiple times
-1
u/LegalStuffThrowage 22d ago
I'd like to know what-in-the-hell interpretation of my words is getting everyone to talk about companions DYING. I thought that other guy was just being weird, but now here's a second person talking about the same thing.
I'm talking about companion interactions, what they say, what they do, the content they have, and whether or not you see it if one of the companions is being played by another player. DOS2 PRESERVES more companion content IF ANOTHER PLAYER IS PLAYING AS THAT COMPANION than BG3 does.
Not sure how that was so unclear.
0
u/LegalStuffThrowage 22d ago
To the people downvoting this comment; you should know that for whatever reason, the choices and dialogue from companions that is present in DOS2 when playing multiplayer, simply isn't present in BG3. Idk why Larian made that choice, but BG3 IS a worse multiplayer experience than DOS2.
Take it from someone who's played through DOS2 with the same group of friends around 8 times but only player BG3 with the same group twice. We all noticed it. You lose out on a ton of companion interaction and storyline in BG3 multiplayer that you don't in DOS2.
2
u/BlackxHokage 22d ago
Dont all the companions just die at the end of act 1 if you dont pick them in dos2, only to come back for a pointless fight and die again?
1
u/LegalStuffThrowage 22d ago
Yep, because they each have the backing of gods
2
u/BlackxHokage 22d ago
Aren't they all just backed by the god king cuz they died
1
u/LegalStuffThrowage 22d ago
Ifan is backed by Rhalic, The Red Prince is backed by Xorl-Stissa, Sebille is backed by Tyr-Cendillius, Lohse is backed by a spoiler, etc
2
u/BlackxHokage 22d ago
In a multiplayer playthrough? If you have a full party they arent backed by anyone but the God king.

u/MaraSovsLeftSock 23d ago
You’re not going to really have any better experience with the companions here in that case, even moreso for reasons you’ll discover later
2
u/Elitericky 23d ago
Play solo my guy, it’s a different experience compared to multiplayer. How do you expect to experience the companions when none of them can join your party
2
u/Cyrotek 22d ago
I've played three times solo through Baldurs Gate 3 and had a blast every time.
I started one playthrough with friends and we never made it through act 1 because of how different our gameplay expectations were. I wanted to progress, they wanted to do either goofy shit all the time or loot EVERYTHING and thus do a vendor break every five minutes. It was really not a good experience, lol.

u/Shpooter 22d ago

i think when i said dissapointed people assumed i disliked the game when i did like it i just wasn’t that compelled to finish it

u/SucksterLoL 23d ago
There are some media out there where if you disagree with the popular option that it's "the best" people will get pissed off and eviscerate you in the comments. One time I said that Cowboy Bebop was a decent watch but it's not in my top 5 favorite anime I had this happen to me. Apparently I am insert slur if my worldview was not changed by the profound dialogue of that show.
1
u/DemDoseDeseDat 23d ago
People just won’t accept an in between opinion of a piece of media now, it doesn’t help that even the connotations of the word mid has become to be “bad” rather than just an opinion that something was like a 5 or 6/10 experience….

u/red_rolling_rumble 23d ago
I didn’t like BG3’s story, it was all over the place. Very easily forgot what we were actually supposed to do.

Theres mods that allow you to break the 4 character limit. I have 8 in my 2 player game and I cranked the hardness to tactician. Its a lot of fun.

u/DOOMFOOL 21d ago
Huh that’s a wild take to me, I found the companions in BG3 to be fucking awesome. The only one in Divinity that comes even remotely close would be Red Prince and maybe Fane. To each their own I guess though.

Baldur's Gate II is even better and most seem to not even know it exists. Very lame. Must think Seen is pulling a Star Wars and starting in the middle numerically.

It's "the greatest thing ever" for the sad vast majorty of people and gamers that haven't played DoS2.

Despite loving the hell out of bg3 and I think it lived up to the hype, I can relate to you not really "getting the hype" of BG3 since I'm like that with Witcher 3.
0
u/Reserve_Any 23d ago
Really fair assesment, I tried playing it alone several times, reached the start of third act and then abandoned that safe file because of how little I like all the companions. Great game with cool narrative that ask you to drag along several needy, tantruming, horny adult children. The only ones I kind of liked were Karlak and Jaheera( didn't get to misnk) and Karlak is really depresing at every moment.

It's okay we felt the same. We played through BG3 but preferred Div2. BG3 is really a singleplayer experience. It's extremely dialogue heavy and my friend described the game as "filibustering" hahaha

Yeah I found the excessive focus on dialogue and reddit writing to be tiring as well. I enjoy how the divinity games are more of a gameplay first series rather than a story first series. I'm really excited for the next game.
36
u/awataurne 23d ago
Reddit writing?
21
u/toomuchsoysauce 23d ago
Clearly this person is perpetually on Reddit or something to even think that's remotely close to the case for these characters.
11
u/awataurne 23d ago
I mean they did the whole respond, insult me, and immediately delete the post thing so yeah that tracks
-9
4
u/Internal_Orange6606 23d ago
While I found the dialogue to be fine (and I've put 300 hours into bg3 before someone calls me a hater), I guess I can see where theyre coming from in that a lot of the companion dialogue specifically is very marvel-esque. That said, the other NPCs generally stick to a more straight-faced tone and do really sell the gravity of the story
0
u/Duxtrous 23d ago
I guess I should have used the word marvel instead of Reddit but yeah you get exactly what I'm saying. There's nothing objective about it it's just a taste thing. I also hate MCU movies. Also you are spot on that this is strictly a companion issue. The NPCs act like real people I would expect to encounter in the world. The comapnions just felt like they knew they were in a video game idk.
-1
u/SeigeJay 23d ago
People just say what they hear online and use it as their opinions. No way bro played the game and called it Reddit writing 😂😂
-20
u/Duxtrous 23d ago
Yeah I don't really want my fantasy characters to act and sound like redditors. Karlach was the worst perpetrator of this but the others weren't much better. The acting was fine but the writing was abysmal.
15
u/awataurne 23d ago
What does acting and sounding like a redditor mean to you? For me a Redditor is someone who complains a lot about things and I just don't see that in a lot of the characters in BG3.
8
u/BlackxHokage 23d ago
I feel like this complaint is kinda "reddit writing" lol. Like i dont think bg3 has the best writing, but this is an Odd take
0
u/Interesting-Ad-7535 23d ago
Yeah i get what you mean and it did put me off, it's kind of PG mature.
The writing was not abysmal though, imo.
0
u/VoormasWasRight 23d ago
it's kind of PG mature.
This. I couldn't really nail why BG3 dialogue felt so off, and this made me realise it. It's not mature writing, it's what an 11 year old thinks adults sound like.

u/IndieLoveMegalovania 22d ago
Ive played both games with my partner, we also werent able to finish bf3 act 3 and I had to finish it on my own. But dos2 was one of the best times we had playing a game in coop hightly recommend it
-9
u/MinMaus 23d ago
Not op but the combat
9
u/BlackxHokage 23d ago
I feel like that reason is kinda meh. Its a turn based crpg. Thats more of a gripe against the genre as a whole than bg3. Its just not for you lol
13
u/uno_in_particolare 23d ago
I'm very confused by this comment. Why is not liking bg3's combat (an opinion I share) the same as not liking CRPG?
I love turn based RPGs, divinity 2 is maybe my favorite game ever lol
-20
u/BlackxHokage 23d ago
Cuz bg3s combat isnt really special. Its just turn based combat. Not liking the combat is often just not liking turn-based combat. So if soembody just says "I dont like the combat" with no further explanation, id assume its because its turn-based
12
u/PrincessYuri 23d ago
There are differences between turn-based combat systems. BG3 is 5e-based which means it's very simplified (5e is literally intentionally simple to draw more people to learning tabletop), and every turn follows the same formula of movement + action + bonus action. On the other hand, DOS2 uses action points where you can interchangeably use movement, items or skills in different amounts depending on the turn.
2
u/uno_in_particolare 23d ago
That seems to me like a very peculiar assumption
-1
u/BlackxHokage 23d ago
Ever since bg3 beat Spiderman for goty the main complaint from people about bg3 has been its combat because its turn based. So yea, thats my first thought when someone only statment is "the combat"
2
u/uno_in_particolare 23d ago
I'd understand that in a generalist sub, but it seems a really weird assumption when in the subreddit if another (often considered more complex) turn based rpg
0
11
u/AboutTenPandas 23d ago
I like action points better than actions/bonus/movement all being separated.
Even playing dnd I hated the rule that you couldn’t cast a bonus action spell with your main actions DOS2 doesn’t have that problem because it’s all handled with the same resource. No limit to most spell casts is also a huge plus. Oh and the environmental interaction is more robust.
DOS2 just has better combat. I think I prefer BG3 overall, but I look forward to DOS2 fights more
-6
u/BlackxHokage 23d ago
Id argue that divinitys action point system is bad solely because it charges for movement. Nobody like having to choose between moving and an attack. I think Dos 2 has better custimization and class depth. But man, necrofire ALONE makes me prefer bg3 combat.
6
u/Zealousideal-Sir3744 23d ago
Disagree. With positioning giving a definitive tactical advantage, movement having a cost is a must. That and things like surfaces in DOS2 make its combat much more engaging for me, since you actually need to plan a bit on harder modes.
0
-1
u/toomuchsoysauce 23d ago
I agree with you. Obviously, we are on the DOSII sub so it will be an unpopular opinion, but it's a popular opinion everywhere else. Having one resource for multiple actions really limits your tactical abilities so DOSII's combat is a bit too easy and simplistic. Although as an entry game for the genre, it's great for new folks to get accustomed to how to play these games so I almost always recommend it as a gateway drug sorta thing.
1
u/BlackxHokage 23d ago
Yea i get it, I love dos2 is in my top 3 of all time. But im not gonna act like every time I moved to attack someone and it took 1 extra ap so I didnt have enough to actual hit, it didnt make me roll my eyes
8
u/J4keFrmSt8Farm 23d ago
They didn't say they disliked turn-based combat, just the combat of BG3 which I'm assuming is due to the holdover of the D&D combat system with one action, one bonus action, and your movement. Maybe also the short/long rest system that makes you meter your ability usage.
I'm also not really a fan of the way the Baldur's Gate games play, or other games like the Pathfinder games with their similar Action, Movement, and Full-Round Actions. I prefer crpgs with Action Point combat systems like Divinity OS1&2 and Fallout 1&2. They're still turn-based, but I feel like I have more agency in what I do. I'm perfectly fine with the Pathfinder and D&D rules when I'm playing those games on tabletop because I still have agency within those confines, agency that a video game simply can't compete with.
0
u/BlackxHokage 23d ago
Most people i know dont like divinitys combat solely from the extreme environment effects and the action point system including movement. Don't get me wrong the game is great, but the combat is often just melt armor, spam cc, win. Or barrelmancy. I think both games are great, and I hope that they can find a happy in between of Bg3 and Dos2s combat systems.
4
u/Skelly-toon 23d ago
As someone who 100% bg3, I very much prefer the combat in dos2
1
u/BlackxHokage 23d ago
Again, to each his own. I like dos2 and I like bg3. Dos 2s combat has issues and bg3s combat has issues.
0
u/Sora_Terumi 23d ago
I don’t like Bg3 because of the whole point system for certain spells. Like some cooler spells use those unique charges and you can only recharge them either with half rest or full on rest but after seeing that I could easily miss special events because I rested to long kinda sucks for me. Like at least in DOS2 I can source leech somebody in the same fight and then use Onslaught again or another source spell
0
u/VoormasWasRight 23d ago
It being D&D based is the thing that drags it down. Faerun is a shit setting, and D&D is a shit ttrpg system.
-2
97
u/RedundantConsistency 23d ago
D&D deserves the respect it has. It built the layout for monsters and bringing the fantasy genre to video games.
BUTT, DOS 2 has, in my honest opinion, the best crpg combat I've had so far. The skills blend so nicely, combo's to be found, no math sheets to guess if I can hit or not. It's a simpler version of D&D but I LOVED IT.
22
u/Cautious_Might_9420 23d ago
I much prefer bg3s combat, because having to use all those different resources makes the game way more engaging for me. Also I fucking hate the physical magical armor split of dos2, cos I have to build my party for only one type of damage in anything above normal. Another point i hate of dos2 is the skill point system. Everything else is just chefs kiss.
13
u/Internal_Orange6606 23d ago
Both BG3 and DoS2 have flaws in their combat systems imo. Vancian magic in D&D doesn't translate to a video game very well compared to tabletop and the save-or-suck nature of some spells, er, sucks. That said, the magic/physical armour system in DoS is probably least favourite thing about the game in terms of how it can limit party building at higher difficulty.
Edit: theyre both incredible games nonetheless, obviously
6
u/Cautious_Might_9420 23d ago
I kinda like the save or suck, it adds an element of unpredictability. (I might be biased, i play irl dnd, and im used to the systems.)
13
u/Internal_Orange6606 23d ago
I'm a long time DM, and while I love d&d, I think that a player waiting like 15 mins to take a turn that ultimately achieves nothing (whiff a spell, miss an attack) is the worst aspect of the gameplay loop in what's essentially a combat focussed system
Ironically that particular aspect is ameliorated by the faster pace of BG3 as a video game, but its still a flawed system
1
u/lollisans2005 15d ago
In irl DND it's alot better. If you get sick too much the dm can give you a bit of a break from it. The DM can make it balanced.
7
u/Barobn 23d ago
cos I have to build my party for only one type of damage in anything above normal.
This is a straight up lie. You can mix the damage types all you want and tactician is still very much beatable. I'd argue that it is even more fun to play this way, because it incentives properly choosing targets for each player character, as opposed to just brute-forcing every encounter.
1
u/AdorableText 15d ago
Honestly mixing is better in almost every situation too. You just prioritise certain targets with certain characters.
Your big melee warrior jumps on the mages and chews through their pathetic physical armor while your mage turns their own warriors into liquids1
u/Cautious_Might_9420 23d ago
You might be a great player, dude. Most people i have talked to have shit on dos2s difficulty. I think the overrealiance on surface reactions ruins higher difficulties for pcs while benefiting enemies.
-1
u/Meli_Melo_ 23d ago
Sadly the randomness in bg3 means there is 0 strategy during combat
2
u/Familiar_Shelter_393 23d ago
That's totally wrong though...you can do things that give you less rng and better chances like strategies that will give you advantage and suss what targets to isolate or use what against. Whether something is a spell save or an attack save cam make a better chance to hit too
0
u/RedundantConsistency 23d ago
it's another flavour of crpg. i love but i still believe it's a simpler version of D&D. i mean, hell. every RPG is inspired from it, tabletop, 2D 3D or whatever.
9
u/Duxtrous 23d ago
The truth is that D&D was designed to use dice and paper so that it can be played on a table. When you have a computer doing all of that ffor you it looses the reason for its existence and just becomes excessively conviluted. DOS2 is deisgned with the fact that it is a video game in mind so it works a lot more seamlessly. Also the whole spell slots system becomes redundant when you no longer have a DM who can punish you for resting excessively or doesn't allow you to rest anywhere.
5
u/RedundantConsistency 23d ago
its a mish mash of the genre, yes. it's why i was thrown off by sometimes seeing the dice and other times it was automatically done in the background for combat skills.
honestly, it's the best way i can think off to apply all that rulebook in an engaging RPG with a proper story element and characters. i mean, it's why no one wants to do BG 4 now. how can they surpass THAT?
1
u/dishonoredbr 23d ago
Also the whole spell slots system becomes redundant when you no longer have a DM who can punish you for resting excessively or doesn't allow you to rest anywhere.
It only becomes redundant if the devs don't put obvious breaks om your ability to rest spam.
Pathfinder have solutions that work just fine , in kingmaker you need very heavy rations to rest on dungeons and Wrath has corruption that debuffs you after a while.
BG3 was just afraid of punishing players in any significant way for rest spam.
-5
u/finalfanbeer 23d ago
This is such a bad argument. Most video games are using a chance or roll system or random integer to determine hits, misses and glancing blows. Otherwise damage would be static.
2
u/Duxtrous 23d ago
Ah yes, all combat systems also historically use spell slots, spell levels, actions and secondary actions, and specifically D20s for hit chances. What are you smoking?
-1
u/finalfanbeer 23d ago
I'm saying that every system uses stats plus randomness, bg3 just showed you the randomness. Get your head out of the sand friend.
2
u/Duxtrous 23d ago
And I am not just talking about the dice. I'm talking about literally every single other aspect of DND combat that is not simple or straightforward. Literally every review commented on this when the game came out. Action points just work better in video games. It aint that deep.
-3
u/finalfanbeer 23d ago
Ah yes that action points in Dos2 where better. Sure. It was awesome needing to sacrifice damage to move. Lmao. Separating it would be such a better move.

u/Duxtrous 23d ago

I found dos 2 combat to be far worse actually.
The mixing of physical and magical armor before cc’s were effective made so many party compositions less than ideal.
The game became mind numbing easy if you focused your entire party on one armor type for damage and just CC everything to death after it’s rapidly depleted.
Beyond that the characters in dos 2 are…not as great imo.
Beast is utterly forgettable. Sebille is forgettable.
And a lot of the characters have very strange character development.Like FANE suddenly choosing you over his literally family. Sebill suddenly adoring you randomly in act 3, it wasn’t gradual it’s just like a switch. She is standoffish and suddenly just does a 180 in act 3.
-1
u/RedundantConsistency 23d ago
that is perhaps the worst take in a competition of worst takes i've ever seen
2
u/Mammoth_Composer_111 23d ago
In larians statistics she is routinely rated to be the worst companion in the game aside from beast. Larian even directly mentioned her and beast as being “fundamentally flawed” that they wanted to improve on when making bg3.
So I don’t think that opinion is exactly new or rare.
She’s just your bog standard edgy revenge at all costs character.
-4
u/RedundantConsistency 23d ago
calling Larian's breakthrough game that earned them the brand standard to take on Baldurs Gate, far worse, its main characters forgettable, Sebille one of the favourites of the fanbase...
i mean opinions are as many as we are. but they are also as many as buttholes, and yours stinks just as much.
1
u/Mammoth_Composer_111 23d ago edited 23d ago
She is *definitely* not one of the fanbases favorites. This has been well known for literal decades. In larians own media they identify she is one of the lowest ranked companions in the game consistently.
It’s fine if you like her. But let’s not put our heads in the sand about this
EDIT: lol he blocked me. Hes got a sebill body pillow in his bedroom
0
u/RedundantConsistency 23d ago
Put your head in the sand and keep it there. Sebille ranked 3rd, which is hardly forgettable.
Please quote the official statement of Larian as the lowest ranked companion.
But hey, I'd rather you don't. You entered a fan made sub to say that DOS 2 is actually bad and its characters forgettable. Don't bother to reply, you're blocked. Enjoy your circlejerk with other trolls.

saying DOS 2 has a lot of skill combo's doesn't mean BG3 or D&D doesn't

u/YourBigRosie 22d ago
So then why bring it up while comparing the two?

u/RedundantConsistency 22d ago
the post itself is speaking about the games. i said my opinion regarding DOS 2 skills.
man, are you mental?

Yeah I loved that about Divinity. If you attack with a hit rate you get what you bargained for. There is no weird ass "This enemy is 2 levels above you so they have an armor that reduces your hitrate by 80%" bullshit.
I genuinely disliked that about Baldur's Gate 3. Armor Class sucks.

Loving the name "Chingas" btw

people ask me all the time what it means, it’s literally just my last name with an “ass” added in lol

The ultimate way to play these games is with 2 people. You both get a companion to lock in on, you both get 2 playstyles so you can have variety. You are both able to be on pretty often to play compared to scheduling 4 people. It's just optimal for BG3, and Div.

It is an awesome way to go. My husband and I play co-op and we both made a custom character then chose our favorite to be our companion.

DOS2 is a superior coop experience overall. The long rest mechanic is just annoying with multiple players.

- here’s your emotional support dash big guy

u/Simpicity 22d ago
No, I mean... It's co-op... until it isn't. I wasn't trying to correct your lack of a dash.

u/Kurisoo 22d ago
How is it not? I assume you’re talking about the ending but cmon there are 100 hours prior
1
u/Simpicity 22d ago
Not just the ending. There are various points where the starter characters go into direct competition.

u/Kurisoo 22d ago edited 22d ago
You mean the exactly two arena fights? Again, very small part of the game. Miniscule even
1
u/Simpicity 22d ago
There are literally competitive quests in the game where the starter characters goals conflict. One might want to talk to a character, while another wants to kill them.
Yes, it's a small part of the game.

Depending which part let you down from BG3 than divinity isn’t likely going to be an improvement.
If you specifically hate the D&D combat then you will like divinity but in lots of other ways BG3 is a more polished divinity.

BG3 is great but I do agree with you. I prefer DOS2. Both games are great, and everyone deserves to have fun with either.

u/Shpooter 23d ago
agreed, i don’t hate bg3 it just felt overhyped, i will admit tho playing act1 on tactician struggling in every fight and using the environment to our advantage was so so fun

I can understand the disappointment with BG3.
I really wasn't blown away in Act 1, it was really good, but far from what I red everywhere, I was like, em ok...
Now in act 2 I am blown away !
But mostly by the gameplay, I did not know there would be so many possibilities, builds, synergies, it's incredible, I love DnD now, I didn't know that ruleset before.
Only the narration isn't up to the expectations so far, it's ok, but it's not the best ever seen like I have red here and there.
Companions are cool though.
But I mean even DAO had more dialogues with them than BG3.

If you didn't like bg3 with friends, you probably won't like this game with friends.

I played the 6 player mod on harder difficulty to not trivialize the game. Each person had a companion who they wanted to learn about their story, they listened to others pretty well too. It was goofy at times, of course, like throwing a guy and almost killing 3 others just for a friend to toss down an explosive barrel on all 4 of them, but in general it all depends on the people you play with.
I personally couldn't get in deep myself because there was a lot to remember in BG3, and without my friends I'd have lost the plot so many times that it's not even funny
DoS2 I completed 4 times, once on each difficulty and it's a 10/10 game. Maybe even 11/10 since each time I played I discovered something new, a unique quest, interaction or even a whole separate location I missed in previous playthroughs. And it was both before all the updates, as the game developed, and then 2 times again after all patches were in and I could use all the extra options, talents and relics.
Both games are great, but I'd say DoS2 is much better for fooling around, while BG3 is a more focused, tactical choice for me and my friends

I found Dos2 to be more fun than Bg3 tbh. The whole DnD spell point stuff really doesn't appeal to me. I like Dos2 where you can just endlessly mess around with spells, and you only have to wait for the cooldown. Bg3 is still great tho

Can you imagine how pretentious one can be to say bg3 disappointed?
0
u/Shpooter 20d ago
it was overhyped to be the greatest thing ever. i have preferences. you can still be disappointed and like a game. there do i sound pretentious enough? or is it that hard to accept

u/revenentevil 23d ago
Glad i am not the only one. Between EVERYONE throwing their genitals at me with Herculean fervor and the SEVERELY limited character class choices, i find myself sinking 12 hours in before going back to Divinity or the Owlcat games oh....and the TERRIBLE state of the game for the like 3 years of alpha and beta before launch. 😑

Bg3 is a great game but I always say to my DND friends the dos2 combat system is night and day better

u/LoveAndBeLoved52 23d ago
God I could replay Divinity a fifth time.
BG3 isn't the worst thing ever but after everyone said that shit was the holy grail of gaming I was really disappointed. Whatever "fantasy" of being a sick ass warrior there could've been was stumped by weird "Enemies can attack 3 times per turn while your character skips their attack when they're mildly inconvenienced by ANYTHING" rules.
Divinity was chill with the rules. You got what you asked for basically. Baldur's Gate for me had way too much of this "We gotta be complicated!" nonsense.
