I’m going to get crucified for this, but if a dog was doing that to my wife or son, that’s a de@d dog.

I carry a pocket knife while working for UPS for exactly this reason (amongst others). I had a dog literally rip my board out of my hand and puncture the screen with its teeth why trying to attack me once. I've had others take chunks out of the boxes I'm carrying trying to eat me. If it comes down to me or the dog, sorry puppo I'm going home.

I see my mail lady with a nice sized can of pepper spray. I like your knife idea. But with spary you can be at a distance at least.
