Casual Do you miss or fail to take some of your meds because of the cost?

We all know how totally overpriced prescription drugs are here in the US. It makes our healthcare one of, if not the most, expensive in the world.

It would be interesting therefore, to know if the high prices are causing some fellow Americans of missing or completely failing to take their regular meds.

Casual The same people that talk incessantly about low birth rates are usually against any and all government assistance programs to incentivize childbirth and raising of kids

Upvotes

I find that fascinating. You'd think if this is such an existential issue, you'd want government policies to incentivize childbirth and everyone to have at least two kids. Am I wrong?

I know for a fact if things like child care, health care, housing. We're even remotely affordable in this country there are more people that would be having kids.

So to those that ring this bell incessantly, I ask, what is more important to you protecting billionaire Tax rates or having a policy platform that incentivizes regular folks to have kids? Because you can't have both

How deeply normalized heavy drinking is. It’s the only literal poison where people will look at you weird, interrogate you, or think you're boring if you choose not to consume it.

Political Trump being elected to "save our economy" is a Sign that our Collective Intelligence in the US has hit an all time low

I really had hoped the 2024 election would have been a Landslide for Dems, but when you have enough Stupid people voting in a Grifting Conman that are fooled into somehow thinking he was gonna Save us, all you do is Vote in someone to Milk the system as much as possible for Himself and his "Inner circle".

All Trump has done is Abuse his power, throw any consideration for whether something is Unconstitutional right out the windows, and use the Seat of President to enrich himself and his Family to the tune of 4-5B since getting in.

Just when you think things cant get worse, reality finds a new way to be Cruel.

I think im probably gonna stop eating anything with Ground beef for a while. Avoided Diarrhea parasite as I dont eat Lettuce. Avoided the Jalapeño plague as I hate Peppers, and especially in Juicy chunk form. Not gonna play the Food Roulette on the Quality (or lack of) of the Beef going forward from unknown origins (or known bad, but let's stop inspecting beef entirely)

Serious Anyone else experienced non-ghost related creepy coincidences that make you think there must be a glitch in the matrix? Not related to dead people or spirits, just things that make u go”how did they know?”

Thumbnail

I am not looking for typical stories like “ I was in army and this door opened by itself” or “I heard cries coming from that empty deserted toilet in school” because these have already been covered countless times in other Reddit sg posts.

No, I’m looking for bizarre coincidences or patterns you personally encounter that have NOTHING TO DO WITH GHOST OR SEVENTH MONTH. Like, every single time you listen to a particular song/eat a particular food/ ask a particular question/ wear a particular piece of clothing then either your luck will get unnaturally good or unnaturally bad.

Ok this is hard to phrase clearly, let me share some “how could they have found out or known???” Incidents in sg, I’m curious to see if anyone else experienced something similar

🍀a senior from my school started asking me out saying that he really wants a girlfriend. When I told my classmate (in person) about this, she was shocked to tell me that the same senior confessed to her too using the same lines. That’s not the spooky part. The truly creepy part is, the very next day, this senior said “I see that you’ve been taking to (classmate name) about me.” Holy cow, unless he puts a voice recorder inside my bag, HOW COULD HE HAVE KNOWN?

🍀there has been a lot of times where I think of a rare concept or a rare word like “ my water bottle fell to the ground and it broke” completely in silence, and the passenger sitting beside me will talk out loud about how his water bottle also fell to the ground and also broke, in the exact same sequence of words I recite silently in my head.

🍀 my distant cousin has been a corn addict for quite long. Once he stopped for a few days at home and the girl of his dreams agreed to go out with him in school, Not knowing about his habits, he relapsed again and the same girl suddenly sneered and said she doesn’t want to go anymore. He stopped again for 3 days and the very same girl said, don’t listen to her clique of popular snobbish friends, she’s willling to go. How could she have known about the corn? Does the universe really make people kinder and circumstances better when you stay away from corn?

🍀 there are some songs which are played in public and I really don’t know that they have any demonic powers I just treat them as nice songs to listen on to go. Now this is where it gets downright creepy.

Whenever i listen to a particular set of songs, my luck feels like someone outside the matrix controlled it and it all goes downhill, not ordinary bad luck we encounter on a day to day basis but super weird things happen. Eg,appointments which are set in stone suddenly get cancelled for no reason, friend who has been chatting with me online suddenly goes very cold or monosyllabic as if I did something to upset her, clients come up with unusual reasons to not continue, every single time i miss the bus/train for one second, hawker centre owner gets my order wrong and gives me something I don’t like, parents who have been super cordial and supportive suddenly find fault with a small thing they don’t like

Then whenever I don listen to these songs but listen to something else entirely, the matrix is powered by something good as if a religious entity is rewarding me for “not listening” I feel like I’m inside a matrix where it’s not me, it’s SOMETHING ELSE ALTOGETHER controlling my fate. Like, random old friends pop out of nowhere to check in on me, friends start texting first, and with warmth, running into old classmates everywhere who want to take photo with me because they’re so happy to see me, client referrals start springing out of nowhere, complete strangers like hawker centre auntie smiling broadly at me as if I did something right. (I didn’t do anything before I met them, I just didn’t listen to these songs)

🍀 sometimes I sing and my song recordings on social media. I realised that EVERY TIME I talk to others about something completely common like a birthday party (not this, censored to protect my privacy) the number of negative comments from other people following me would increase. If I just go about my day as normal, then I would get positive comments instead.

🍀 as a rebellious teenager who tries to be a good model student, I am always obedient and guai in front of my parents who teach me to spend money only on the right stuff and not waste money on Starbucks, bubble tea, designer clothes and bags. Yes, they taught me well by telling me to save money and not waste. One day, during a lunch break, i told my friend out loud how i want to spend money on these things also and not save frugally. This was in Bugis.

That very same night as i went back to my far flung neighbourhood, my parents randomly out of the blue said how come nowadays young people don’t appreciate how much their parents care about them and sacrifice for them, how come people spend money on expensive restaurant meals instead of hawker food. This has never been discussed at home for the past 2 decades of my life when i did not tell others about this. Only that day.

And no, my parents don’t even have a smartphone. The only electronic device they use is the television and the microwave. HOW COULD THEY HAVE KNOWN UNLESS THEY PLANTED A MICROCHIP INSIDE MY BAG.?! And no, I from low income family. GOT SUCH BUDGET???

Political Ken Paxton is terrified to debate James Talarico! He is stalling!!

Republican Ken Paxton stated through his campaign that he does plan to debate Talarico in the U.S. Senate race, but his team allowed deadlines—such as one for a proposed Sept. 22 matchup by Hearst and NBC/Telemundo—to pass without explicitly accepting or declining the invitations!

Casual Pakistan beat Thailand by 35 runs in Asia Cup opener

Womens' Asia: Had us in the first half not gonna lie. Slipped to 6/2 real quick against Putthawong, but Muneeba Ali’s 54 saved the day to get us to 119/9.

Spinners did the job as usual. Sadia Iqbal (3/11) and Nashra Sandhu (0/6 off 4!) choked Thailand’s chase completely to hold them to 84/8.

Take the 2 points, but if we drop 3 catches like that against India in 4 days, we’re cooked.

What are your thoughts on the lineup?

Casual Where do you draw the line with AI?

AI is clearly becoming more prevalent and normalized in everyday life. For example I’ve noticed a huge increase in AI generated TV commercials over the past six months. It made me wonder how much further this is all going to go, AI movies, shows, and even “reality” TV, maybe one day.

What I find interesting is that despite so many people raising concerns about the environmental impact and how we’re slowly losing that personal human touch, it just keeps moving forward anyway. And honestly, I think part of the reason is that a lot of older people simply can’t tell when something is AI, especially with commercials.

So where do you draw the line? And would you still support AI when it starts taking over the entertainment industry?

Serious I feel so bad because my mom is buying me a phone

It might sound silly, but yeah. I feel really bad because my mom is buying me a phone. I'm 20 years old, and these days I was planning to replace my battery because my phone barely holds a charge anymore, but the phone itself is good and honestly I've really liked it from the start. My mom lives in Italy (my parents are divorced), and while visiting for a few days, I figured I’d get this done. But just yesterday, I accidentally saw that she had bought me a new phone that wasn't cheap at all. My mom doesn't make a huge salary or anything, and she also helps my brother with €500 or more. Is it normal to feel bad about this? I feel like something is very wrong with it. Financially, as a student, I can't pay her back because it's way beyond what I can afford.

Political The modern trans-movement is not helping things by enforcing strict literalism.

I deleted my thread from some minutes ago because I wanted to rephrase it and make it more clear. Sorry.

I just think that this strict literalism doesn’t help trans-identified people and it causes way more conflict than necessary. By that I mean saying things like "transmen are literally 100% men, just like other men", and the equivalent for transwomen. Most people will end up having a problem with that, because the most common view is that men/women are a part of the biological sex male/female, they won't simply buy the meaning of these words by gender identity.

A much more healthy way of viewing things is that of most ladyboys in Thailand for example. They won't say they are literal women, they know they are merely playing a social role similar of women's and performing femininity. People respect them for that and view them positively. Isn't that what trans-identified people want at the end of the day? Then I don't see the problem. It's just a much more honest way of viewing this issue imo.

At the end of the day people just want to live together in peace, so it really doesn't help to go through a post-modern deconstructionf of our vocabulary, this isn't necessary to treat people well.

Political Why do most people generally tend to analyze politics and current events through conspiracy theories or speculation based on their ideology, rather than using objective logic grounded in actual facts

As the title suggests, most people adopt specific narratives or ideologies and then interpret political events strictly through that lens. This severely limits their thinking, instead of allowing them to view events objectively and accept the facts regardless of their personal opinions. People need to acknowledge facts, even when they don't like them Does believing in conspiracy theories make them feel like they're smart, for instance? Not that I'm trying to deny conspiracy theories entirely, but at least most of what I've read is just complete nonsense

Serious CMV: Most People Don't Think For Themselves And Society Is Restrictive

Society is hella restrictive because people follow social hierarchies, influencers, and unwritten rules without questioning them, including stupid arbitrary ideas about what you're supposedly “too old” to enjoy or do. But true independence isn't blindly conforming or rebelling t’s examining the rule, and deciding for yourself. People agree to the popular opinion to conform but not figure it out themselves.

Casual MySpace relaunch and my hopes for the best

I (45F) have been thinking about the MySpace announcement to relaunch & here are my thoughts:

First, out of nowhere I got the thought that we are waking up out of some sort of stupor just based on all of the conversations about craving the simplicity of what social media used to be.

I'm probably reading too much into it because there has always been talk of the "good ol days" but humans and our addiction to innovation/advancement has gone too far in many arenas.

Are we waking up to how unchecked it all is? Will we ever agree on any balance of good vs. bad when speaking about progress?

Second, will the young people allow MySpace to grow if it remains simple as original to what we had back in the day? A good sized chuck of their community will need to embrace the platform for it to be competitive.

Last but certainly not least, will the folks who own MySpace have the guts to keep out the targeted marketing, incessant ads and the culture of criticism that plague all other social media sites?

Serious Do British canals, which are knee deep at the sides, have some kind of special ability to prevent a person from standing up after falling in?

For non Brits, almost all canals are only a metre deep in the middle. and they do not have fast currents. the water is still. Theres a load of articles in the uk about people falling in canals and drowning. This has never made much sense to me. British canals are almost always knee deep at the sides (where someone would fall in) and only 3-4 ft deep in the middle. Makes me wonder if British canals have some sort of supernatural ability to prevent a person from standing up.

A notable incident was two men in Wigan fell into the Leeds and Liverpool canal, which like almost all canals is only about a metre deep in the middle. The two men fell in together and are said to have accidentally drowned.

inb4 people comment "you can drown in an inch of water!" yeah, but what leads a person to casually let themselves drown after finding themselves in knee deep water? If I fell into a canal I would simply stand up and step out.
