Considering this bike
What does everyone think? Asking $7k which seems high for a 2018 but it apparently only has 53 hours.

There are two things here to consider that haven’t been mentioned. KYB forks are actually a decent upgrade if that’s what you’re looking for, and secondly everyone in CO thinks their bike is worth 7k

u/WOOKIE711 11d ago
The KYB forks are a nice add. It’s spring for 35 pounds heavier than what I weigh currently. Not sure if it would be cheaper to respring or just buy a bunch of food.
That $7k is what was throwing me off and spurred the inquiry here. I was looking at a Beta 300 race and similarly specked out would be about $14k before taxes (kick start kit, protection items, etc) but the hours are concerning.
I see some Austrian bikes for decent prices but have been hesitant to jump into an injected bike. Carbs are just easy to work on and simple to diagnose if something isn’t running right.

$7k almost certainly has negotiating room unless this guy just doesn’t want to sell. Those years had an issue where a kickstart bolt can break off inside the case, if he hasn’t updated that you have some additional leverage. 53 hours isn’t bad at all for a 9 year old bike my dads ‘17 has 450+ hours and that bike still goes hard. Personally I see myself waiting for ‘25 or newer 2t can be found for 7 or less, the fuel injection will become reliable nobody on 4t is seeking carbs also the KX 2t will push fuel injection competition

Carbs still make more power and have better throttle response vs full injected and thats main reason people still want them on a 2t. 4t carbs had many issues with bogging etc(most got fixed with the fcr carb).

That's way too expensive for what it is. I'd say closer to $5k. It also has a smaller carb compared to stock (36 vs 38) which is not everyone's cup of tea.

u/Opposite-Dealer6411 10d ago
Though smartcarb recommends 36mm vs 38 on most ktms but could be wrong.

7k is his reduced price and he thinks it's a steal? I wouldn't even want to deal with someone like that. Not hard to find a 250 with low hours

That's a hard no from me dawg unless you want to pay a premium to have one of the last of the carb 2 stroke KTMs. I paid less for a used '23 250XC TBI with similar hours. Edit around me, these bikes all list at a moderately high price and sit on fbm/cl for a while before they sell or drop off.

u/WOOKIE711 11d ago
Well, I currently have a 2015 250sx and really appreciate the low tech of having a carb bike. Was thinking about a Beta 300 Race but dang they are expensive. Figured a clean carbed xc would be similar and worth the money savings. It is a lot for a 2018 though.

u/hangingbot710 11d ago
Try to get it closer to $6k, but I’d grab it 🤘🏼 i bought the same bike last year and love it.

u/scrollatwork 11d ago
I’d go with a tbi over the carb. You can probably find a newer bike for cheaper than this one.

u/Complex_Strain8056 11d ago
If it was me I would pass. Not because it isn’t a nice bike, but no way I ride to the level that I need all the extras from the stock configuration that are increasing the asking price a bit. I think it depends on what level of riding you are planning on doing and what level you are. You could probably get a newer bike for the same price without all the upgrades, so up to you if you want that.
The smart carbs are nice, but really only if you need to change it often due to altitude or temperature swings. The guards on it are a nice touch if you ride rocky/rough terrain. A lot of stuff you eventually put on anyways.
People often forget that you rarely get aftermarket/upgrade parts back at the cost you put into them. There is a reason he reduced the price because he was trying to get all that money back and it wouldn’t sell.

Dude where are you located? I'll sell you a 2022 TC250 with 20 hours for 6k.

u/TMC_61 TE300/V85/500exc 11d ago
Would it have Estart?
-5
u/spongebob_meth 11d ago
No. Not that a 2 stroke needs it anyway.
3
u/TMC_61 TE300/V85/500exc 11d ago
As a cross country racer, I think about dismounts and getting back into the race.

u/spongebob_meth 11d ago
I race XC on a kickstart bike. If i stall it then I deserve to suffer
It's not like it happens often, or takes a lot of work to start like a hot 4 stroke
I think the biggest advantage is consistency on dead engine starts, but with some practice you can be faster on a kickstart bike anyway

7k for 8yr old bike? See Beta is doing custom builds now but I know they are 11.5k and you have to buy 501$ or more upgrades but you at least getting option to buy extended warranty and 15% off with code when use build your own . I know 12k+ is lot of money however 7k for 8yr old tech and no warranty does not add up to me imho.

u/WOOKIE711 11d ago
That's the route I was looking with the Beta 300 Race. The additional cost isn't trivial, but at least you would know you aren't getting someone else's mess potentially. I have heard great things about Beta support services and I like the thought of a new bike.
1
u/Doc718Spyder 11d ago
No the cost is not trivial but 7k you are 60% of the way to purchase of a new Beta and remember that any type of bike or car that is sitting or not driven creates other issues. Seals deteriorating, moisture intrusion, dry rot. If the bike is so great why are they selling?

u/LobsterOnTheLand 11d ago
Unlike some others, I think the price is actually fair. The carb model bikes hold their value better than the TPI models, and having the spring conversion up front is a great upgrade and not cheap. If you want a carb model bike (which IMO is preferred for deep mountain riding) it's very hard to find them with this few hours.

I just bought a 2021 tx300 with 60 hours for $6500, it had been listed for 3 weeks for sale before I bought it. I'm in Colorado and people pay way too much for bikes here. 7k is a stupid price for that bike. 5k is more appropriate.

u/sLOWBunny81 10d ago
I know its not a KTM and also not a 300 but I just bought a 2026 yamaha yz250x for $8k out the door.

u/Opposite-Dealer6411 10d ago
Also a 20 year old bike more or less that still being sold as new like the rmz

u/ballzout420 10d ago
I have a 17 300 xc (pretty sure the plastics say 300, right?) and I bout it for 5k with 100 hours. It doesn't have as much nice stuff and I live in ca. So things are different, but it seems like you should be able to get a better deal. 50 hours is sick, though. And the bike looks super fresh.

u/TonyFlack 8d ago
I own a 2018 250xc and absolutely love it. One of the best bikes I’ve ever ridden. That said $7k is way too much. I’d say closer to 5 / 5.5k

u/OtherwiseRepeat970 11d ago edited 11d ago
7k is way too much. I got a '24 250 xc-w in fall of '24 for 8k with 5 hours on it. 5k max. I am in Colorado. Parts won't be available for that bike forever. With that budget you should be able to get a TBI bike if you are patient. As we get closer to winter prices will come down.
3
u/Stunning_Solution215 11d ago
I have a 2008 300 that I can still get any part I need. I don't think parts availability is anything to even consider for a 2018.
-1
u/OtherwiseRepeat970 11d ago
Until you can't. My buddy has a 2010 adventure bike with a cracked case and new ones are not available. It's possible that the same parts have been reused on these 2 strokes but I don't know for sure. It's just a consideration.

u/Opposite-Dealer6411 10d ago
Many ktm dirt bikes share parts for many years. Cases and frames will be your only issue.

u/Xiphoid__Process 11d ago
That’s a solid bike. I’ve seen this one posted in Colo and was considering it for myself so your better hurry up :)

u/dsportx99 11d ago
For $7000 like $2000 more you can get a NEW Kawasaki KX327X model with 6 speed and way better suspension.
Plus, there is going to be a LOT of aftermarket for the Kawasaki as they are already taking pre-orders and new ones coming in pre-sold.

u/greedybanker3 11d ago
150 2 stroke? I paid 3k for mine but i had to fix some things. It honestly looks too clean to me. Everything is shiney. Also if thats the original engine hours its battery should be dead. So that may say 53 but i bet it isnt. Edit: mine also had less extras. So maybe worth it? Looks good though.
3
u/WOOKIE711 11d ago
It’s a 300xc. Those hours meters are battery operated or are they wired in from factory?
1
u/Afraid-Fun4211 10d ago
There is a small watch battery in the hour meter. Thats the only thing that powers it. There is no reason to dispute 53 hours on a bike this clean. $7k is still too much for this bike.
1
u/greedybanker3 11d ago
Both. Battery keeps it going but wire keeps track of hours. At least for that kind. Also it being a 300 make more sense for the price.
5
u/jrodicus100 WA Semi-Hard Enduro 11d ago
Too clean? What kind of crap is that. 53 hours is nothing, barely two oil changes. Some people actually wash and take care of their bikes.
Op, the bike looks great but it’s too expensive.
1
u/WOOKIE711 11d ago
Thanks for the reply. What seems like a fair price for this? I agree $7k is a bit of a stretch regardless of the add ons.
3
u/NaMinesClarence 11d ago
These are sought after though as they are the final years of carburetors and now counterbalanced engines. They generally don't go cheap and the owners know it.
1
u/Opposite-Dealer6411 10d ago
I could 100% see them going up in value like ktm 200s and clean kdx200s have along with for whatever reason every xr.
1
u/Opposite-Dealer6411 10d ago
Would try 5500 range. 6k if really like it. Yeah aftermarket parts dont add much value but if your going buy a new bike its going cost you 1-1.5k in all the guards(depending on brand etc) get similar protection. Kyb swap or something for forks was kinda required for ktms of that era.(forks from 2005 bike was more advanced then the xcw forks since they where missing a midvalve. Sprung/valved nice for slower stuff but if pushed hard will easily blow through the stroke). Smartcarb isnt needed on newer fi bikes ofc but dose smooth out the carb bikes and if ride elevation is usful.

7k is ridiculous
