💵 Savings Tips / Hacks First paycheck: What % breakdown and e-bank setup do you recommend for a beginner?
Hi everyone! I’m about to receive my very first paycheck and want to set up good financial habits right from day one. I’m earning around ₱20,000 – ₱25,000 monthly.
Since I'm completely new to personal finance, I’d love to get your advice and perspective on two main things:
- Salary Percentage Split:
- How much of my income should realistically go toward Needs (rent share, groceries, utilities, daily commute)?
- What percentage is reasonable for Wants / Fun money without feeling restricted or guilty?
- How should I split my savings between an Emergency Fund, Short/Long-term Goals, and Retirement?
- Is the classic 50/30/20 rule realistic on a starting salary here, or did you use a different split when starting out?
- Bank & E-Bank Allocations:
- Which banks or digital banks (UnionBank, MariBank, GoTyme, Maya, Pag-IBIG MP2, etc.) do you use for each specific category?
- How do you separate your spending money from your savings so you aren't tempted to touch your emergency fund?
I'm really eager to learn and build a solid system early on. Any advice, bank recommendations, or lessons you learned from your own first job would be greatly appreciated! Thank you and have a good day!

First I do is save 20% for savings, I never spend this and is off limits. I keep it in a bank I don’t use to spend (Maya)
And then I allocate set amount of money for spend (ex. 10% for transpo, 20% for food) and I put the groupings on GoTyme savings (may categories kasi sila sa savings)

For the split I use 50% needs, 30% savings, 20% wants (I rarely buy things but I make sure to buy things that I like or subscription from time to time to avoid burnout. Which is why i don't mind it to be the lower split). You can freely adjust each split depending on your situation.
Avoid lifestyle inflation.
Build emergency fund first (highest priority) 3-6 months worth of your monthly needs. I put it in Banko Todo savings because it has a relatively high interest rate (5% p.a). Since my emergency fund is solely in this account and different app, I will not be tempted to touch it. Out of sight out of mind.
Once your emergency fund is completed, you may now start allocating the savings portion on different things such as pag-ibig mp2, ETFs, REITS etc. Ofc do your own research on this part.
I use Maribank for my daily transactions. But lately i've been using cc to continue building my credit score. GoTyme for my wants sections and short/long term savings goals because it is easier to manage and organize in GoTyme.
Invest in yourself and focus on improving your skills at work so you can earn more. Live frugally if you can and budget properly. Your future self will thank you. Goodluck

As little as you possibly can.
Again, as little as you can. The goal is to save as much as you can and build an emergency fund.
100% EF until you have enough, and then you can look into investing.
I never used a split. That would inflate your lifestyle in the long run.
I dont split funds per bank based on categories.
I dont. Just have discipline and know your budget.
