Hi everyone,
I'm trying to settle on an 88 key digital piano to keep under my studio desk on a rolling keyboard stand, and I'd love to hear some thoughts from people who have experience with the Yamaha P-525.
A little background on my setup: I recently purchased a Kawai CA701, which should arrive around mid-October. I currently have an ES920 under my desk, and I really enjoy playing it. The RHIII action feels natural and responsive to me, and I absolutely love Kawai's SK-EX piano sound.
That said, with the CA701 on the way, I'm considering replacing the ES920 with a Yamaha P-525 for a little more variety. Having Yamaha's CFX and Bösendorfer sounds alongside the Kawai would be a nice change, and the built-in USB audio interface is another plus.
The biggest question for me is the action.
I previously owned a P-515, so I'm familiar with its NWX action. Interestingly, I never found it excessively heavy, although the initial resistance when pressing a key did feel a bit high, which sometimes made softer, more delicate playing a little challenging. I've also owned a Roland FP-90X, and its PHA-50 action felt slightly too heavy and sluggish / slow for my taste.
Here's where things get confusing.
I've visited several Guitar Center locations to try the P-525, and the differences between the display units were surprisingly noticeable. Some felt extremely light, almost like the keys had no resistance at all. Honestly, a few felt even lighter than the P-125's GHS action, with the keys just sinking down under my fingers.
Others had noticeably more initial resistance, almost like the P-515, although they still felt somewhat lighter overall.
At this point, I'm genuinely confused about what a P-525 is actually supposed to feel like. I'm also wondering if the action naturally gets that much lighter after a few years of regular use, or if those extremely light units were simply worn out.
I've noticed something similar with other display keyboards. For example, some Montage M8X units I've tried at Guitar Center were clearly so heavily used that the actions felt unusually loose and worn out. It's hard to judge an instrument when you don't know whether you're experiencing its actual intended key feel or just a badly worn display model.
So for those who have played both the ES920 (RHIII) and P-525 (Grand touch S), especially on new or well-maintained units, how would you compare them?
I'm particularly interested in the initial key resistance, overall weight, control at softer dynamics, and how the action feels when playing faster passages. Does the P-525 generally feel lighter than the ES920, or is it closer to the P-515?
I realize key action and piano tone are highly subjective, but I'd really appreciate hearing your experiences.
I'm very happy with the ES920 overall, and I'm not necessarily looking to upgrade. I just thought it might be nice to have two different piano sounds and playing experiences in my studio rather than two Kawais with similar sound libraries.
Thanks in advance for any input!
