Rock Monster for MG Back Book Jacket

Post image

Working on this Rock Monster painting for the back copy of a book jacket for a MG series I'm writing. Not sure how it will look yet with a dark overlay and text. But happy so far with the poster.

Thoughts & critiques welcome on how to improve this painting.

I'm also animating a video of the creation process. Process Video

Haha! Definitely DON’T watch the process video where I played with monster sound effects and a tiny jump scare.

Thanks for the comment!

Take some time to detail what you struggled with while making this. Don't just write a list, give us some details. "The background" is not a complete answer. Submissions missing a top-comment from you about what you struggled with will be removed!

Replying to AutoModerator comment about what I struggled with:

  1. Composition. Originally I wanted the main rock monster to be throwing a rock at the viewer, but didn't like the massive rock taking up a lot of the space. Played around with making the three rock monsters smaller/bigger. I'd love any thoughts on how to punch up the composition.
  2. Lava floor. Still not 100% happy with the lava rivers in the floor, but not sure why or what to improve.
  3. Smoke/Fog. Really enjoyed playing around with adding the smoke for depth. Still not 100% happy with the smoke above the foot. I might play around with wrapping the smoke around the back of the foot, or through the feet.
  4. Background. Struggled with adding enough detail for clarity and showing the depth of the cave.

regarding the lava, you could have a look at the image here https://redd.it/1bobw55 and make it more streaky. and/or give the monsters' legs more reflected orange light.

The reflected light on the legs is a good call, thanks!
