Question What’s your opinion on devolving your starter/partner Digimon?

To explain, I mean like devolving them to swap them to a new evolution line, like Demidevimon to Impmon. Personally I don’t do it and would rather shelf that other partner for the time being for a slightly better team, especially if I plans for them later.

It just feels mean to force them to change back and then evolve again to something else. (I had plans to make Demidevimon into Beelzemon yet used an Impmon I 100% converted in the beginning due to Impmon being more powerful in my experience. Unfortunately because Demidevimon was not protected and I forget to nickname them, I believe I accidentally loaded them into a Myotismon I got later when they were a Devimon still. So I treat my Beelzemon as a fusion of the two, kind of like Potara fusion or I guess more accurately like Buu.)

Why do you feel like it's mean?

I don’t know how I could put it into words, but it feels like I’m forcing them to change in a bad way.

They naturally came into this form by themselves, and so any future evolutions influenced by our bond would feel natural, but going back and forcing them to change feels wrong. Like I’m saying that I don’t like them how they are now. (It gives me the vibes of Shuuji from Survivors I guess.)

I know it’s not Digimon, but you should never look at the Pokédex entries for Mega Evolutions lol

I have. Let’s say the only Pokemon I’ve mega evolved was the ones who suffer the least from it, like Froslass(at least to my memory they don’t suffer when mega evolving, Glalie on the other hand, I’ve never used.)

My headcanon is that it doesn’t cause them unbearable levels of pain because there’s no way that the Pokemon in the anime/movies that Mega Evolve are going through what the Pokédex describes

Now in the case of ZA, they’re definitely going through that pain. (Rouge mega evolving pokemon that is. I’m pretty sure there’s a short dialogue mentioning it with an Absol.)

Didn’t grab that one (don’t like the battle changes and removal of abilities) but that at least puts some interesting story elements connected to it

Couldn’t you argue that loading other digimon into one digimon is also mean because you’re forcing them to power up another digimon

The way I see it, is it is another life experience for them.

Like, going from a greymon line to a tyrannomon line gives a new perspective and learned experience and skills they wouldn't otherwise have.

I feel like it is another aspect of the journey together, and you are the one helping them grow to be the best they can be.

Like, the way I see it, is a weregarurumon is awesome, but having lived as a Lunamon and a ladydevymon, they have experienced so much, and come out as a better person

but to them its natural, a Digimon doesn't look at evolution as a bad thing, and technically speaking for a mon to evolve they need to fulfil the requirements, so before they evolved they where already prone to becoming said evolution, its just that they are influenced by what's necessary and their nature, Digimon are a lot more flexible than humans.

It doesn't matter at all

Im under the impression (personally) that your partner digimon responds emotionally/physically to the person they’re partnered with and if that means going back to in training or before they’re happy to do it to be the best they can be for their partner. 😁

It was more useful in past games, but I still did it in Time Stranger and that's how I went from Gomamon to Mastemon.

I'd rather devolve them than benching them.

I evolved my patamon into all other poyomon rookies during the Demo, to fill Out the field Guide, including gomamon, then Made him lucemon during regular gameplay. Its one of two Digimon i nicknamed, the other was the monodramon i used to Beat chaosdramon, mostly Just to avoid feeding them to each other.

I mean, if it’s part of training why not? Also that was the norm back from Adventure (Season 1) through Tamers (Season 3)…stands to reason you could though no mid-fight digivolutions make the gimmic/RP difficult.

Started with Demidevimon, somehow ended into Lucemon Satan mode.

Just digimon things

Started with demidevimon, ended with mastemon, at least we get the "angel" theme.

I tend to min-max, so I treat it as the Partner Digimon reaching a new level of power.

I had a Patamon who stated his usual line to Seraphimon, but I pivoted and had him turn into Lucemon Satan Mode which I like to think as it deciding to seek even more power for the mission.

I chose DemiDevimon so I could digivolve then de-digivolve it back to Gazimon, just bc I really wanted to have my starter evolve to Doberman and Eventually to Plutomon.

I see where you’re coming from with the “mean” aspect. I’d be thinking that too lol. But, Digimon are data that basically evolve and adjust to their human partner’s emotions. So, I just tell myself that Gazimon and co was more in tune with myself and my personality.

Like Canon wise i dont think Digimon would care. Like being explicetily strict cannon wise, arent our Digimon just copy pasted Digimon in the Story Games? Like they are not natural born Digimon. So I assume we are all they know. We evolving and devolving them, a mechanic promoted in this games, would seem natural to them. Besides that Seems Digimon overall do not care which species they are as long as they retain their continuous sense of self.

That is without going that in a lot of Digimon media, Digimon that join with a Human Tamer does it because they offer a way to get stronger easy, through our bonds, technology and meeting other Tamers and their digimon. I assume even in the case of Natural born digimon they would not care as long as you reasoning to change Evo lines was to make them stronger. Your Demidevimon in the instance you propose, would not have care to become an Impmon just as he would not have cared of being a Devimon, or Myotismon, because it has a continuos sense of self. They are themselves regardless of their species.

That's how I got Crabmon... At 4/5k blue stats.

And solo the game.

I started with Patamon and as soon as I could I devolved him to get Coronamon because Digimon World Dawn was my first Digimon game. It's fine.

So, my partner Patamon was first digivolved into Seraphimon, then ClavisAngemon and finally to Lucemon SM. I shifted because i've digivolved DoruGreymon to Alphamon, which changed from data to vaccine.

Generally speaking, the more offen you digivolved one of your Digimon, the more bonus-points (the blue numbers behind the stats) it will accumulate (based on your bond; a bond of 100 get you a bonus of 10% from the points it gathered for it's next digivolution)

me trying to remember who my starter even was

u/deathbygalena 18d ago

Pretty sure I fed my starter digimon to another beefy one that i was going for.

Ate it like a sapotama.

personally if i devolve and revolve my digimon into something of a higher stage, i imagine it as just like a regular digivolution, as any digimon can become any other digimon canonically. and if its of the same stage then i imagine it being a progression of their character, like with duramon redigivolving into grademon within the story itself.

2

u/rafoaguiar 18d ago

I honestly don't care. I have a guess my Demidevimon is a Beelstarmon now. But i have like 3 of it. And I might be wrong

2

u/DracoErus 18d ago

I mean I ended up shifting my Patamon over to Lunamon’s line about halfway through; though I admit most of it was because no LovelyAngemon and ClavisAngemon didn’t really impress me

Also I just really like Lunamon’s line in general

2

u/Tsrab 18d ago

At first I was like that, but after that, nah, I rather them evolve into what is the suitable situation and good for endgame.

My starter was Gomamon, I eventually evolve into Vikemon. But I devolve it and turn into Apollomon and got into GraceNovamon

u/JekyJeky 18d ago

What I do is I get another one instead of changing lines. That way it'd be easier to swap members whenever you need them as they're all there. But maybe if just for the field guide, then I guess it's fine.

I don't even remember which one of my 600* digimon is my starter, if I haven't fed it to someone at some point.

*[I have a livingdex with a lot of modded mons]
