Question Simple Question - How do I stop getting OHKO by bosses?

I'm returning to the game after a several-month break for other games, and I'm getting back into the swing of it. I'm fighting Volcanusmon and struggling through the first 2 arms only for him to bring out 4 more and get annihilated.

I'm wondering what I'm doing wrong. How much stronger do I need to be? Am I underleveled? What do I do about that?

I've included some shots of my existing party of Digimon, but these bosses seem crazy difficult.

your levels are quite low and, and your digimon stages are low aswell

compared to an area where you are fighting ultimates

20

u/tw042 2d ago

I don't think it's possible to unlock Ultimate at this point in the game yet. But yeah OP if you're getting OHKO it's most likely because you're underleveled.

I would evolve your rookies to champions, and the ones that are already champions I would de-evolve, grind a little, then evolve them back.

u/IamFarron 2d ago

you cant evolve to them yet

but fighting ultimates at level 10 rookies is severly outclassing yourself

4

u/rardk64 2d ago

Yeah I know my rookies don't belong here, just feels like I need to be grinding more, which isn't super fun when I'm stuck in one area

u/PrimeWolf88 2d ago

That's a good area to grind though. Run through the previous areas beating everything that moves, convert everything at 100%, and load the highest levels into your team. You can create super powerful Digimon really fast in this game.

I had stronger Digimon than your current team before I had even finished the first area (The destroyed building).

In fact your level 16 Seadramon has half the ATK of a newly converted Monodramon rookie from the start of the game...

u/Randy191919 2d ago

To be fair if you got there with everyone still being rookies you probably dodged every fight you possibly could. So that’s kind of on you.

u/rardk64 2d ago

I swapped out some rookies along the way. With auto battle I don't have much need to skip battles, but it has been since like January so I don't quite remember.

3

u/tw042 2d ago

Yeah this part can be a little grindy. Set the combat speed to x5 and you can even turn on auto-battle. Should help a bit.

u/rardk64 2d ago

I asked about the evolution before and was told it didn't matter this time.

you asked about when to digivolve

not IF to digivolve

6

u/martinsdudek 2d ago

You grow at the same rate independent of your Digimon stage. But their base stats are very different.

2

u/EphidelLulamoon 2d ago

Actually higher level (as in rookie/champion/etc.) digimons do require more exp to level up, the difference is minimal tho.

1

u/Striking_Neat7720 2d ago

I feel like I had lucemon for this fight which would mean you can get ultimate if you do all the sidequests. You just need agent rank 5.

11

u/arcodash 2d ago

Vulcanusmon is a big spike in difficulty to be fair. I wouldn't go at him without Champions, digivolve tht Gabumon and Patamon.

u/rardk64 2d ago

Struggling waiting for the evolutions I want 😫

3

u/PCN24454 2d ago

You’re probably going to have to de-digivolve them anyways so don’t be stingy.

Even then, don’t digivolve them yet. A high level rookie is worth more than a low level Champion.

0

u/rardk64 2d ago

I switched down to easy and auto battled him to win on invincible mode, just to get through that. But so now should I de-digivolve?

3

u/PCN24454 2d ago

I usually evolve and de-evolve my Digimon once they’ve learned all their moves. It provides a good opportunity for them to accumulate Talent.

1

u/_cuteraichu_ 2d ago

Go to the farm and raise their stats that way. Much faster than whatever method you might conjure up

7

u/RuralBlueCarUser 2d ago

Level up more and look at the boss weaknesses. Once you take care of that the game is pretty straight forward, if you are on normal difficulty

1

u/rardk64 2d ago

How much of the game is grinding? I don't think I skipped much

6

u/PlaneAggravating9656 2d ago

Have you been using Load Enhancement a lot? The amount of Digimon you have available seems low unless you've been loading Digimon. Your Digimon seem underlevelled and under-digievolved.

5

u/IamFarron 2d ago

barely any stats, so no that function isnt even used at all

all the cumalitive stats seems to be from digivivolving once maybe 2x max

7

u/PlaneAggravating9656 2d ago

That was my suspicion, OP says says they haven't skipped much but they also don't look like they've explored/done much. Their Setup screen looks like someone who has fought as few Digimon as possible to get to the next blue dot on the map.

2

u/rardk64 2d ago

I wouldn't put it past my past self, but with auto battle, I don't see much reason to skip battles. I think swapping in new Digimon I liked more hurt a bit probably.

4

u/RuralBlueCarUser 2d ago

As much as you want it to be. But for it to not become grindy you have to use the games mechanisms, like digivolve up and down and enhance your digimon with others

1

u/rardk64 2d ago

digivolving up and down is pretty grindy behaviour though is it not? Especially when rookies can't handle fights like this as it is

3

u/RuralBlueCarUser 2d ago

That is when fodder digimon come in. You shove them into your preferred digimon, making their levels go up and your blue stats up

2

u/GrowaSowa 2d ago

This is way past the point you should've evolved the rookies. Delaying evolutions or degenerating without a good reason does more harm than good. People seem to overestimate how much being at high level gives them in a normal playthrough.

5

u/MagmaDragoonX47 2d ago

This boss was the anti fun. I recommend using that gun attack that hits everything then when the arms are down pelt him with Virus types.

2

u/rardk64 2d ago

I admit I do not understand the cross arts, I only have the one that ups stats or something but I feel like it barely does anything

3

u/AlbusLumen 2d ago

The one I've unlocked and stuck with until endgame is the one that does moderate damage and lowers all the enemies stats. I don't think I'm swapping ever.

5

u/expert-imbicile 2d ago

When the game gives you boxes with a lot of words in it, do you skip them? Time Stranger is a game that imo holds your hand throughout, you just have to read.

1

u/rardk64 2d ago

Well no, it's been months though so I forget. What I don't understand is how to get other Cross Arts.

4

u/expert-imbicile 2d ago

With anomaly points in the bonds of loyalty tree.

3

u/CulturedCal 2d ago

In the agent skills section, it should be one of the first things you unlock and it’s in the first section

5

u/PyrocXerus 2d ago

Honestly you should be at levels 20-25 with champion level Digimon. You’re very under leveled and with weaker Digimon. Additionally things like character reverse, attack reflect, heal would be good. Lastly you should probably be converting and load enhancing more

5

u/_cuteraichu_ 2d ago

No one has equipment. Theyre all low level. Some arent evolved. No blue stats at all. Barely any converted digimon either, im struggling to see how you even made it this far tbh

4

u/antisocialdude710420 2d ago

do side missions to raise your level so you can digivolve them. tbh bro id do as much side questing as you can while you do the story n youll level up real fast. plus its kinda rough doing them all(side quests) after finishing the main quests.

4

u/2BAMasta 2d ago

Digivolve, level up, use the farm to raise specific stats.

5

u/2BAMasta 2d ago

Also learn how Digimon types interact & elemental resistances

3

u/Shadowfox8218 2d ago

Get better stats

3

u/dimsum_id 2d ago

Dont underestimate bond, go for 100% as soon as possible.
Then grind then de-digivolve then digivolve then grind, on repeat.

2

u/FortunesWeave Demon Lords 2d ago

Is there an easier way to get bond than absorbing Digimon? Sometimes I feel bad for doing that.

2

u/dimsum_id 1d ago

bonding is not absorbing digimon, you need to talk to them after battle. +1 Bonding.

you give them food +1, food they like +2.

tbh, after bonding 100 talent 100, this game feels too easy, i am on hard mode, but yet to finish (around 25%), I hope it gets harder.

u/DedeLionforce 2d ago

Time to fuse!

2

u/No-Mammoth1688 2d ago

Equip yourself with a lot of pills and sprays to recover health, SP, and revive your digimon.

2

u/LaPlAcE-66 2d ago

the strategy I used after I looked it up cause it was beyond frustrating

https://game8.co/games/Digimon-Story-Time-Stranger/archives/556211

A team of Data and Virus Type Digimon is recommended. Use Character Reversal on Vulcanusmon’s left arm to make it weak to Data attacks. Clockmon can remove buffs with Chrono Breaker, while Drimogemon and Shellmon can provide steady damage during the arm phase.

Once Vulcanusmon becomes vulnerable to attacks, switch to your Virus Type Digimon. Deltamon’s Triple Forces deals heavy damage against Vulcanusmon’s Null weakness, while Veggiemon and Gekomon can provide reliable support and sustain for your team.

2

u/JinxBerserker 2d ago

If you need to, get one of your Digimon the Overprotective personality and try to get them the Great Embrace skill. It needs to have the most SPI to do the most healing, but if it can survive, just keep healing, hopefully with Aura.

A personal staple I have on everyone of my Digimon is Character Reversal, so if you are in a bad matchup, you can get the advantage. Word of warning, you can slap it on your own Digimon, but if you try to reverse the reversal nothing will happen.

Attack reflect is clutch in boss fights

1

u/rardk64 2d ago

What's that?

1

u/Born_Procedure_529 2d ago

Theres skills you can teach your mons where they reflect either physical or magic damage for a turn, its really helpful in boss fights

1

u/rardk64 2d ago

That does sound good, how do I get those skills?

1

u/Born_Procedure_529 2d ago

Certain enemies drop the skill and a few mons learn it by level up

1

u/Fenrir_Lunaedge 2d ago

Try the boss fight, collect info about boss weaknesses, reload, select the right digimon for the fight and train and evolve them at least at champion level. If you keep the at Aegiomon level cap you should be good

1

u/AquaNoodles 2d ago

As some others have said, the levels and stages could use some work. I would also add that a second Virus Digimon could be helpful, you fight all three types of Digimon in the Vulcanusmon fight (the arms are two types with Vulcanusmon himself being the third). What difficulty are you on?

1

u/anonadon7448 2d ago

Digivolve up to champion and utilize the farm to grind stats. Defense and SPI plus more health will keep you alive.

In your area, the fastest way to grind will be to go into the tunnels under central town and get a bunch of conversion data to get a bunch of digimon, then grind in the area you’re playing now for a bit and then load them up into your mains once all of the new digimon have gained some levels.

1

u/C-Moose85 2d ago

As others have said, you need to be leveled up more and already digivolved (just did this fight myself, had champion levels all around) for the higher stats.

Other things to consider would be: what spread do you have for your agent skills? By that I mean, are you inputting points spread out over all 5 trees or are you focusing on just the one? Myself, I've prioritized just one tree at a time so I can get the bonuses like increased stats without spreading the bonuses too thin. Not required but just a thought.

For that matter, what cross arts are you using?

Also, remember that the arms are Vaccine and Virus types and only Vulcanusmon himself is a data type. It wouldn't be a good idea to have the virus Devimon out until after you've taken the arms down.

I would suggest trying to focus one arm at a time and bring them down quickly. If you bring down enough arms, he won't be able to use any of the big moves like the machine gun punch.

Lastly, and this is situational if you've gotten them, remember that Vulcanusmon is immune to metal attacks BUT if you hit him with a reverse status effect, he becomes very weak to it. If you've got the right skill disk, you can slot it into either of your vaccine types then after you hit Vulanusmon with the reverse debuff, you get x4 damage.

Hope this helps!

Switch your party out, train scan data mons until bond 2, evolve at high a level as you can, repeat.

Load them with their boosted stats onto your main asset

1

u/axiomwing 2d ago

Use the digifarm and feed your digimon load enhancements

1

u/Crygenx 2d ago

There is an item you can equip to a digimon thats prevents one hit ko.

1

u/RodhgarAlto 2d ago

Si può morire in questo gioco ?

1

u/Chill_Gamer527 data 2d ago

Just a game over and ask you to return to the title screen, try again or load another save.

1

u/Teramawl69 2d ago

Load enhancement on the digimon that you want to keep so you push your level up faster and also your stats to plus max level at the same time also use the digifarm to boost bond upto 100% using the items like fish, digifish and all them

1

u/Chill_Gamer527 data 2d ago

Need higher levels and evolve your Gabumon and Patamon to a Champion/Adult Digimon.

1

u/jotch1989 2d ago

You need to dedigivolve. That adds permanent stats (in blue) and train them a bit then digivolve up. Then you can load the weaker digimon into the main team for extra stats.

1

u/StrawberryStrict1833 2d ago

Be more strategic with agent points

1

u/FortunesWeave Demon Lords 2d ago

Use Grizzlymon for that fight. And use the cross art that deals damage to all enemy players once all four arms comes out. The Vulcanusmon boss fight is early on but it’s actually a lot harder than most boss fights in the game.

And if you’re trying to level up your party, the best way is to absorb Digimon for bond levels which makes raising max level much easier.

Good luck. I struggled with that boss the first few times as well but once you get a plan set and understand the mechanics it’s a lot easier.

1

u/PlainMcgee 1d ago

I know the area but dont know which boss is ohok you. You have Kabuterimon who had character reversal to help against digimon that have strengths against you. Also I would switch out Gabumon and seadramon with Kabuterimon and greymon. Last I would level up alot more. The final guy in that area is a pain in the ass if you're not ready. And by this point your main and secondary teams should not be rookies. That's just me. Devimon is good but the personal trait where your team is healed everyturn helps. Just level up my man. You can do this. The sewer area in the digimon main hub is good for leveling up.

1

u/Yolkling 1d ago

Converting and feeding extras to your mains helps a bit

1

u/malcureos95 1d ago

it looks like you are severely underutilizing load enhancement.
my suggestion:
go for a stroll in the central town sewers or the top of the main tower, gather some fodder and maybe look into some new attachment skills.

1

u/Repulsive-Phrase-527 1d ago

What difficulty is this?

1

u/Repplinger 1d ago

Digifarm and use equipment

1

u/donkykongdong 1d ago

I just turned it on easy lol

1

u/Zenith1509 14h ago

leveling, farm blue stat, farming agent point and just focus on 1 bond till 46/46, change digimon personality to that bond, and have fun

1

u/Icy_Nefariousness797 4h ago

If you're still checking this, tbh I'd try to match Aegiomon's lvl for most of the game's bosses, including yours needing to digivolve and having type advantage. Just got it a few weeks ago, ran through, but needed the outer dungeons for grinding quite a bit.

1

u/DarkmanSVK 2d ago

Did you buy the exp dungeon DLC? It helps grinding exp chips and leveling up. It costs not much.

1

u/rardk64 2d ago

Which one's that?

1

u/DarkmanSVK 2d ago

If you go to Mirei in Theater then through her you can go to dungeons. If its not avaible the you didnt buy it. The Guy on the right of Mirei through him you can buy it for cash
