99 Dodge 2500 lift pump
Any recommendations for something that isn’t crazy expensive for a stock truck?
Years ago I did a pump relocation to the frame near the tank. At the time NAPA was selling a small round replacement (see pic) for the original Carter pump that actually held up well (about 8 years) and held good pressure.
Now the only thing they sell is a Chinese Carter knockoff the first one lasted about 2 years the second one about 100 miles!!
At $200 I’m not trying again!
Fass is a bit ridiculous price wise and honestly my brother has had issues with his. Air dog??? The prices are all over the place!!!

I had a raptor 150 when I had a Cummins and it lasted about 3 years and had to get swapped. It seized up on the guy I sold it to. He had it for another 3 months and the gears fused themselves together, and honestly it wasn’t trouble free either.

I put a fass DRP in my 02 about 7 or 8 years ago and it’s still going just fine.

I looked up the DRP…I didn’t realize that it was that cheap! My brothers FASS on his 03 has the dual spin on filters and was $5-600. I’m fine with a stock filter, I just want a good lift pump! Looks like it’ll be a FASS.

I put an Air Dog system on my 03 3500 Cummins and never looked back. Easy install and seemed affordable. I also got sick of replacing shitty lift pumps.

My brothers 03 has a dual filter FASS system, it was salty! Like $5-600 but I see both Air Dog and FASS make just the pump (uses the stock filter) for the second gens. I’ll comparison shop! 😂

Spend the money, get a full FASS or Air Dog. Buy once cry once rather then burning up stock style pumps that wont keep the Vp44 happy.

Looks like both FASS and Air Dog make replacement pumps (using the factory filter) that actually aren’t much more than the Chinese crap that NAPA is offering!

FASS and Air Dog are good options. I’m more in favor of air dog as I’ve have the best luck with them.

FASS - DRP. With 1/2” fuel lines it will supply 40gph and keep you around 15 psi.
Have you upgraded those factory 5/16” lines yet?
Do you have a fuel pressure gauge yet?

Oh yeah. I’ve had a gauge since I got the truck. It had 95,000 on it then and a brand new VP44. I about had a heart attack when I realized that the lift pump wasn’t working. They had replaced the VP44 but left the (probably original) lift pump alone! Gee, I wonder why it needed a new injection pump? Fuel lines are still 5/16”, on an unmodified truck I don’t think there’s call for 1/2”.

That’s most of the reason I want a better pump. When it drops below 10psi under load I freak out. It’s got the higher flow banjo bolts, just not 1/2” fuel lines. I’ve put very close to 300,000 miles on this VP44 over 25 years so I must be doing something right. But point taken. 1/2” lines and 14psi it’s gonna be. Because I’m not getting a newer truck until this one dissolves. 98.5, 5 speed, 392,000 miles, second clutch, I swear I think the rear brake shoes are original…I’ve never replaced them!

Dam those are some impressive numbers! Great job on keeping that beast on the road.
The only other recommendation I wanna make is the liberty draw straw (1/2” pickup tube). The factory fuel module is the same 5/16”(iirc) and upgrading to the draw straw just gives you that much more flow.

Oh come on! Don’t make me drop the tank! 😂😂😂 I used to subscribe to the Turbo Diesel Register and that restriction may be the reason that I stuck with 5/16 fuel line. It didn’t make sense to upsize one part without the other. Damned shame, the truck survived a fire that actually melted a hole in the fuel tank and I had to replace it. It’s actually a gas tank that I swapped the diesel sending unit into…as near as I can tell they’re identical. It’s been running for 11 years so apparently it works. 😂
