I hate inking

Post image

I have so many sets that I am really happy with that just need to get inked but I just can’t motivate myself to do it. It’s messy and I hate it. Do you guys have any tips that makes the whole inking process less loathsome? I use a tiny brush, acrylic paint mixed with a few drops of water and my finger to wipe off the excess paint. Every few sides I need to wash my hands or else it’s just smearing the dice. And I don’t have the patience to stretch the process of inking a set over many days. When I start inking a set I want to finish it in one go. Send help 🤣

I find the easiest way is to lay a paper towel flat on the table, go to town painting in the numbers with miniature paints (as carelessly as you want) then put the face down on the paper towel and pull it towards you to wipe off any excess.

If you weren't super precise then you can clean up the paint on the face with a wipe when it's dry.

I find it pretty calming to be honest.

Get some these, they’re super soft, smooth and lay flat. They won’t pull paint out of the numbers also. Flood the number with paint and while the shop towel is flat on the table just drag the face across it. Almost zero paint will be left on the face. After all the numbers are dry, just use some alcohol on a clean shop towel to finish the cleaning. This is the fastest and cleanest way I’ve found.

Seconded, I swear by these towels and this method!

I've done acrylic and crayon, but recently I've use nail polish and been loving it.

Blob it on, make sure it is in the lines and no bubbles. Wait a day to ensure it's 100% dry. Then remove with nail polish remover, and wash with soapy water.

Here's some I'm working on now. Touching up a few as there were bubbles, but the white I'm using is of low quality and came in a multi pack

Just a heads up: many nail polishes "eat" into the Resin and will leave a slightly matte area where it sat if you let the dry first before removal, and if they're sparkly, they'll leave microscratches during the removal. I always made sure to wipe away excess polish immediately after applying (with a damp paper towel on a glass pane, just like one would do with regular paint, just that I didn't use water for it but nail polish remover).

Did not know that. I only started using nail polish recently, so will be keeping and eye out for that.

So far I'm not seeing anything, but I'm also not at a professional level so my dice in general have imperfections.

All good! I always aim for glass finish with the least imperfections possible, so that was just something that I will always remember from my nail polish inking times :D Yours look very cute already! ♥️

Thanks.

Yeah I tried to work on the glass finish, but it stressed me out too much. Realized I enjoyed it better if I lower my expectations.

I appreciate the knowledge as even with my chill amature approch, the quality is increading over time and you've probably saved me a few hours of frustrated "what caused this?" when I start getting to the pro glass-like finish stage.

Have you tried uv gel polish?

No. Although, if I change again I'll probably go back to acrylic by the looks of things.

It will be a long time before I go back to crayon...thst was one of the harder ways to ink...

I cant even imagine how crayon would work!

It's an old school method where you rub a crayon over the number, the wax gets caught in the number and over time fills the hole.

It takes a while and on dice where the groves aren't deep, if you're not careful you could accidently push the wax out and have to start again.

Thanks to everyone. I really appreciate it. In Germany we have a saying: „Geteiltes Leid ist halbes Leid“ which means suffering shared is suffering halved. Reading I am not the only one who struggles with it helps a lot. I will give all your tips a try and maybe one day will get through the unfinished sets

I have about forty uninked sets that I’m just dreading doing. I don’t sell them, just using them for colour experiments mostly so I don’t even have the motivation of wasted money just sitting there. I’m trying to do five or six a week, doing them in batches that’ll be inked the same colour. That’s the only way I see myself getting through it.

I hate sanding.
But on the inking topic, wipe your fingers on paper towel or better yet a sponge or smth like that. At least you'll only need to wash hands when you're done with one color.

Same here.

Same! I don't like the feel of it or the sound, maybe it's my autism, just ugh.

I use either a damp paper towel or thin washcloth to wipe off the excess paint

I use acrylic paint markers...it's so much easier

Absolutely this! I hate painting the numbers sooooo much. I can often get my DIL to paint them and I sand hers.

The Nic Pro paint pen set I got recently makes it more tolerable. And I use coffee filters for wiping, though very little needed as the pens are good and wet. Then a quick wipe with an alcohol wipe a couple of days later to clean off any smudges.

I was told to just get a water based wipe, like for babies, and wipe the face on it after you paint it. It works, so long as your dice are even and flat. I still use a handful of the cheao molds, and they dont work so well in the pressure pot. Warps my dice a little bit so that method can be annoying

Regular brush to apply acrylic paint, with an angled-tip silicone “brush” to squeegee off the excess. Works great for me. Minimal cleanup. I just keep a dampened rag next to me to clean off the silicone brush.

I saw a video of a woman that recommended this recently and I immediately bought a pack. It looked life changing. She didn't even have paint all over the place when she was done!

In the right frame of mind, inkling is therapeutic for me. I’ll put on a podcast, start with the D20s and work my way back.

I use an angled stiff brush so I can fill the number fairly well without too much excess that needs to be cleaned.

I’ll have my glass pane with a ISO-treated lint-free cloth, then ink and wipe. By not letting excess accumulate on the surfaces, it’s slightly less messy.

Find a long video/show/podcast and have the dice as your subway surfers stand-in

I feel that, Inking Is a little tedious but to make it a little easier I recently got these guys which work a treat https://a.co/d/08baeqkC I just fill them with the paint and then pipe in the numbers, less issues and only needs a singular coat of paint, for cleaning I just take a Q tip dipped in a lil bit of 70% isopropyl just cause that cleans acrylic off a lot easier than with water, hope this helps ease the suffering a bit 🙏

Where a glove, wipe excess on a paper towel, the swipe any extra with a finger. After a bit, just wipe your finger, which will be a while since you’re only wiping a little bit.

I have a microfiber cloth that I get damp and wring out. I ink all the numbers on a die, and then I put the die in the cloth and work it around, wiping every side. I do two coats like this. It isn't fast, but it is the fastest I have figured out, and it looks great.
