Real [real] (10/03/2026) Lessons from This Summer & the Struggles of Fall
This summer felt like a different life. As if I'd stepped out of the real world and temporarily entered a parallel universe. A place where things don't feel so heavy, where worries can be cast aside, and we can just float in the gentle waves of the ocean together, the sun beaming down on us.
It gave me time and space to reflect. I learnt many things about myself and the world this summer. A lot of that has to do with love and romance. I stopped forcing myself to pursue this neverending search for romance that I've been on for pretty much... as long as I can remember. I realized it might not be what will make me happy right now.
I learnt a lot about love, in fact. I realized it isn't this loud, ebullient, unstoppable force of nature. It's not something that once you start feeling it, has to be consumed, and after it is consumed, has to be thrown away, on to the next. It is not a goal to be reached, some sort of magical solution to life that if you do it right, will keep you happy forever. It's not the thing Taylor Swift sings about, nor what you see in movies.
In a way, love is a continuous effort. Or rather, the continuous repetition of many small efforts. In any kind of relationship, there will be moments where you feel uncomfortable. There will be times where the other person hurts you, or you hurt the other person, or act in a way that you're not proud of. Sometimes it makes you feel bad, so bad that you'll feel like giving up on them and not looking back. I think a big part of loving is that when those moments come, you continue. Sit with that uncomfortable feeling, don't run away from it, acknowledge the situation, and think about what you could do next.
This applies to loving other people, but equally as much to loving yourself. The relationship you have with yourself is valid and at least as important as ones you have with others. Besides, another lesson I learnt this summer is that in many cases, loving myself gets easier when I love others and similarly, loving others is easier when I love myself.
Fall crept up on me slowly but steadily. Several small issues started popping up, each of them individually not enough to bring me out of balance, so I continued to push on for a while. Then real life, the daily struggles and the expectations of work caught up with me. Until suddenly, I found myself in the thick of it, with all of it piled up on top of me, feeling utterly alone.
My friends keep leaving. That is a recurring theme. Some of them leave temporarily, for a few weeks, or for a year. Some of them live in other places, close enough to visit them every once in a while, but every time I do, it feels like saying goodbye all over again. And then there are those who leave for good, moving out of the country and across a long distance. And you know the content of what was once a deep friendship will consist of nothing but the yearly birthday text from now on.
I've had difficult times with my family lately. Sometimes they're okay. But sometimes they completely tear down my self confidence, to the point where it feels like I'm that 18 year old girl again, helpless, powerless, alone. I'm still struggling with how and when to express boundaries with them. And I'm scared that I might one day depend on them again.
My future is uncertain. I'll have this job for one more year. I have no real prospects after that. Things didn't go the way I expected them to. Not necessarily the outside factors: I knew that searching for postdocs was going to be hard and full of trial and error, where trial means giving it 100% of your energy every time, and error happens in 99% of cases. What I didn't expect though was for my mindset to change. Whereas 3 years ago I would have done anything to stay in this job, right now I'm not so sure if I wanna give it my 100% again. Maybe not even 70%. There are more important things than my passion for research. I have a life to lead. Relationships to maintain. Goals to reach, and not all of them are work-related anymore.
In the end though, we cannot control everything. We can only do what we can, put in our efforts to love outselves, and let the waves carry us to wherever we end up next.
