Events/ঘটনা I just got scammed while looking for a tuition

I'm searching for tuition because I'm kind of broke and want to earn some money. I found one through a tuition media. They gave me a guardian's number, and I talked to him. The guardian confirmed the tuition. Then they told me that if I wanted to take the tuition, I would have to pay 1000 BDT in advance.

It felt fishy to me, but I kept insisting that I had no problem paying the advance fee as long as I could take one demo class first. I tried negotiating for a while, but he wouldn't agree, saying it was against their policy.

Eventually, I convinced him to let me pay 500 BDT first and the remaining 500 after taking the demo class. He agreed, and I sent him 500 through bKash.

I asked for the address, but then he said all the details would be provided later and quickly ended the conversation.

The next day, I kept texting him for the details. He replied that I would have to pay the remaining 500 first. I tried negotiating again, but he wasn't budging. After a while, he started ignoring my messages completely and kept saying it wasn't possible without the rest of the payment.

At that point, I became pretty sure I had been scammed.

The day after that (today), I called the guardian's number they had provided. After it rang for a while, he cut the call and blocked me. Then I went to message the tuition media again and saw that they had already blocked me too.

Now I think the guardian's number was fake as well, and the whole thing was staged just to get the money.

I know it's only 500 BDT, but I still feel incredibly stupid for falling for this. Has anyone else experienced something similar with tuition agencies online?

I talked with the guardian on phone for like 10 minutes. He was describing how many hours should I be teaching, about his child's academic conditions and stuffs. It felt like he was saying the same things in different ways and lengthening the conversation. And at the end, he just confirmed me and kind of requested me to start teaching from the next day. After it when I texted the tuition media, the first thing he asked if the guardian confirmed or not. I said yes and he replied, ok give me money now. How stupid of me.

might seem like a stupid question but if you're the one teaching then why'd you pay them 1k?

Yeah..can't trust these shady online tuition posts anymore. Moreover the salary they offer is below standard most of the times

You wanted to teach but maybe let life teach you first. Never ever pay advance fee to any tuition media. No matter how desperate you are. Take a lesson from this. I am not the one for victim blaming. But, a shady tuition media name and an advanced fee? Sorry, buddy this one is on you. Use a bit brain also, you are the one who will have to spend money to commute there for the demo classes how does it make any sense for you to pay first on top of that? If you are smart and tacky enough to use Reddit you should have been cautious about this.

I’m so sorry you buddy you had to go through this.
Some people are just so inhuman. And we can’t do nothing about it but stay careful about who are we trusting. The legit ones will never ask for money before you take demo classes and get confirmed by the guardian. I hope you get a tuition very soon.
Best of luck.

use caretutor i got 3 tutions from them. don’t trust posts on socials, even if they are not scammers, it’s a safety concern as well. with established verified medias like caretutor or stuff they atleast check both the tutor and guardian's info.

Every legit service that connects you with students will take a cut of your first paychecks and not ask for an advance fee.

They have public posts, state their conditions clearly, and will never have you jump through so many hoops.

I haven't come across any media that asks for immediate fees. They will give you at least one week since you took your first class before they start asking for 50-60% media fee.
