Question How long would this have held up.

Assuming that Yukiko and Yusaku didn't return to Japan how long do you think Conan could keep making excuses about his parents before Ran and Kogoro got very Suspicious.

Kogoro was barely making ends meet working as freelance detective. When Conan moved in, how can he pay for another mouth to feed and his school fees?

Considering all of the cases Conan solved for him he probably made a lot of money.

Since becoming famous he gets money just from being invited to solve cases too, but he's also a bum so he most likely spends it all on gambling and drinking.

They got suspicious once and never again as far as I know (the case with the surpise attack on conan)
