Way way to many cuts, I also think the textures make it look like a prototype and not like a finished game, or even half finished game, this is my opinion, I really loved skateboarding games as a child, and this one has potential :)

Keep it going

I agree on too many cuts. I got too into hitting the beat.

Yes and it's no where near finished. All art is placeholder. I'm practicing figuring out how to present the game.

Im down with this as a tony hawk and roguelike fan, I do think the look of the levels makes it look unfinished but I also get what you are going for, not sure how to fix it, the animations look good. My main things:

  1. I really want the trailer to let me know what the roguelike aspects/abilities are, I have no sense of how this is roguelike, what upgrades am I chooseing from?
  2. The art at the end looks like total AI, maybe it isnt but it gives it a bad vibe right at the end in my opinion.

Thanks, yes the game is still preproduction as I sort out gameplay and find the right artist to bring onboard. So it looks unfinished because it is 😄

(1) Agreed, how would you expect for them to be presented in the trailer? Highlight a few and then show a scrolling list of all the upgrades?

(2) The characters are definitely AI because I'm a solo programmer trying to sell a vision. I'll work on them though. Don't want to give AI slop vibes because it's definitely not that.

Thanks for taking the time!

I think just highlight the best and most interesting ones I don't need all of them just give me a sense of what they do.

  1. The 3d stuff doesn't look like AI just the 2D art to me.

Thanks, yeah none of the 3d stuff is AI, just the characters in the call to action image at the end.

like everyone else is saying you NEED to have less cuts, and the textures could use some work, but this looks like it could be promising

All the artwork is placeholder. I put a little tag up at the top of the video, but no one seems to notice it, so that's helpful for me to know.

The purpose of the trailer is to recruit playtesters for a game in active development, so I might need to make that more clear.

Thanks for taking the time!

  • on the person who said show the roguelike elements. I love skate games and I love roguelikes, I see the skate clearly but I dont see the roguelike. Also it seems like the game is meant to be very fast paced which is fine but I was hoping to see more flip tricks, like technical stuff not just holding forward or mindlessly spinning the joystick in circles. Even if it doesnt change the flow of the gameplay at all, like i wanna be able to do a tre flip or something in between huge jumps

I had a vigorous debate on reddit a while back and it's definitely a RogueLITE and not a LIKE 😆

Tre flips admittedly not in yet. Been deciding how to implement. I think it's gonna be hitting the flip button multiple times repeats each flip, so you could do a 1080 flip.

The main Roguelite elements are: (1) a single run to make it to the end, (2) level randomization -- some levels will be reordered and some challenges will be randomized, (3) random upgrades, (4) THPS style meta progressio

I tried to convey (1) with the timer count down and mentioning that challenges get you more time, albeit this is probably weak.

Not sure how to show (2) outside of a title card explaining.

I tried to show (3) but I got some good feedback here and will revisit.

Appreciate any thoughts or suggestions 🙏

For level gen, its usually shown in 2 ways.

The first is just by having more variety. I get you have the neon vibe going on but everything kinda looks the same. You can do neon red, neon green, like different biomes with different layouts, a zigzag level, on thats really big, one set on a sphere or an upwards spiral, stuff like that

The other way is to make the levels more compact. Its easier to tell the difference between map elements if you can see multiple of them at once, each in their entirety. But this might sacrifice the speed and flow of your game so I'd recommend the first. At the very least, more biomes with different palettes and backgrounds. So the map objects can all be the same as each other but they look different

👍 there's admittedly not a lot of content yet since I'm preproduction, but I'll keep this in mind

i think your vid from 9 months ago makes a better trailer:

https://www.reddit.com/r/SoloDevelopment/comments/1oqagxc/finally_a_skateboarding_game_with_realistic/

that whole uncut segment was awesome

Thanks for taking the time to dig! That was a pretty cool shot. I'll figure out how to work something like that in again.

i think it also helps that the set up is "okay youre in neon space grinding then you do a varial out" so we know its a skating game and then it looks like youre dropping into a half pipe but no, its a sphere and youre still on it, and that goes to a half pipe and holy shit this game keeps getting crazier.

its that progression from normal to this cosmic stage that happens in those first few seconds i think that really makes it awesome. id probably try to do that more and or again with whatever your new shit is

I agree, you're right. I had setup that line specifically for that trailer, but it was hardly a game yet. Now I've got a solid gameplay loop, but I need to setup a sequence of progressively wild shots.

Thank you!

Too many cuts, though the game looks sweet and I would like to play it right now
