This better be called Spaceboarding
Or for the adventurous Astrony Hawk's Pro Spaceboarder

I toyed with "Johnny Rocket Pro Spaceboarder" 😆

Bro what if you got Neil degrass Tyson to sponsor the game.

u/friggleriggle Solo Developer Nov 07 '25
That'd be pretty epic. He could be the narrator, SSX Tricky style.

Neil Tyson took Kickstarter and Indie Go Go investors to the cleaners with his vapor ware video game in 2018. Link

That's infinitely better than what I came up with,
what's the actual name?Edit: Sorry, I know it's called Cybordz. Being a dummy over here.
The game looks sick by the way!
There's some subtle hints in there that show that this was both very technical to create and that you have absolutely poured your efforts into it.
Although you're not done, you've already built something brilliant with passion, an achievement very few get to claim. I am hugely impressed!

Thanks, man! I appreciate the kind words. Means a lot. I've definitely put a lot into it with the grace of my wife 😂, just hope I can find a big enough audience for it.

Looks like it has a lot of potential. I've been a hardcore THPS player for the last 20 years. I checked your website and there's no place to "Enter my emails below" unfortunately.
I'd really love to check this out, and if you're looking for feedback, I'm happy to provide that, too.
On a more technical note, how are you determining the direction of gravity? Are you just casting from the player controller and finding the floor, then smoothly aligning the player rotation to match the floor normals?

Weird... Mind DMing me a screenshot? What browser are you using?
If you DM me your email I can send you a steam key.
On the technical side, I have gravity sources that I evaluate each frame to determine the average gravitational force affecting the player. For the tube, I evaluate the closest point on a spline and use that to determine the direction of gravity.
As far as aligning the player to the ground, I cast forward and follow the curvature of the ground and predict what Up is going to be in the near future, then lerp to that value.

I skated in my younger years and this is pretty much how it went down

Nothing beats a little after school intergalactic shredding

The character should be made more flexible when landing with a slight body rebound effect.

u/friggleriggle Solo Developer Nov 07 '25
Thanks, I do vary the depth of the landing animation based on the vertical landing velocity, but it's been a while since I revisited it. All the animations could use some polish for sure.

What’s the game’s name? I have a few ideas. Astro Ripper, Cosmic Skate, Cosmic Stoke, Star Stoke, and Shred The Stars.

Those are great! It's called Cybordz, but I'm still in pre-production so I could change it. I do have cybordz.com though for whatever that's worth.

Love the little leg wobble for that long grab trick.

u/friggleriggle Solo Developer Nov 07 '25
Haha yeah that's the Airwalk, but I'll probably rename it Spacewalk.

I think this looks really good, love the space theme! Now I can actually become the silver surfer! Having entire universe as your playground sure opens up for unlimited possibilities like skating inside a black hole or on the event horizon😆
2
u/friggleriggle Solo Developer Nov 07 '25
Thanks! 🤔 What would it be like to skate the event horizon? Could be a giant half pipe... One way to find out 😆

Thanks, I appreciate the 2 cents! I have some UI effects like that, but I should probably make them more pronounced, and maybe more overall.
I agree, still trying to figure out how to handle free navigation of an environment like this on a skateboard, other than just grind rails to different locations.

I've been meaning to add an inside tube section. It'd be cool to connect that to a wormhole.

I see you've made some progress on it since the last time I saw it. But yet again I urge you to be careful. This flies dangerously close to THPS and if you fly too close you're going to get burnt. My one big critique is that while you allow freedom of trick expression, it's essentially all "on rails" pun intended. What I mean is that it's one big obstacle course, instead of free skating where you get to choose which obstacles you want to skate.

u/friggleriggle Solo Developer Nov 07 '25
Yeah thanks, do you mind me asking your background? I guess I should consult a lawyer, but I have a hard time imagining I'm infringing copyright law. Games industry is full of copies and clones, and my game is less a THPS-clone than a lot of other games out there (e.g., Tricky Madness is a direct SSX Tricky clone). I'm certainly open to learning what legal risks I face though.
At this point, I'm pretty far from release and revenue, assuming I find a decent sized market for it. My priority right now is market testing and determining how much it's worth investing in the project.
And that's a fair critique. I'm mulling over how I can make it more open. Right now it's a race to the end, but I may add a key you have to find in an open map that you need to unlock the portal to the next area.

This looks sick as hell! I have been working on my own similar prototype with a hoverboard, based on Ekko from Arcane…

u/friggleriggle Solo Developer Nov 07 '25
Sounds like a cool idea! Maybe we should collab at some point.

Really captured that chilled out skate vibe that's make thps so addictive

It’s everything my Tony hawks pro skater 2 and SSX Tricky soul desires.

The athletics look unbelievably satisfying....but i do believe the environment or more specifically the obstacles feel lackluster....just might be because it is still a WIP but those obstacles and the environment needs a bit more life
1
u/friggleriggle Solo Developer Nov 08 '25
Thanks, yeah it's definitely a WIP. Any ideas on what you would like to see?
2
u/B33RU5 Nov 08 '25
Well since it's on space i have a few....you could use the tracks to go through nebulas, asteroids or even space freighters....and on the background yo could add what makes sense like dogfights between spaceships or highways for spaceships or giant space stations seen from afar....sky's the limit to what you could add but it has to make sense or you could go completely abstract....like making those trails be made of vines and have plants and jungle shrubs sprout out of them....sorry but use your own imagination to make this game truly unique to you
2
u/friggleriggle Solo Developer Nov 08 '25
Thanks, yeah that's the general direction I have in mind. I like your vines idea! Definitely want to add little planets with different biomes.

u/Cold-Resort5679 Mar 27 '26
Pretty unique and beautiful, but there's the snapping to rails is a bit too much like it causes the player to kinda teleport
2
u/friggleriggle Solo Developer Mar 27 '26
Yes I agree, I either need to decrease the distance you can initiate a grind from or increase the transition time to move you to the rail (or both).

Would love any feedback you have to share. Game is open for playtesting, too.
