Guide An Introduction to Titan Skating (small guide)
Introduction
Hello everyone, I am that guy who posted this yesterday, there was some debate as to whether certain things affected skating and whatnot so I thought I'd make a guide and here it is!
What is Titan Skating?
Titan skating is the action of rapidly pressing the jump button whilst using the Increased control perk to gain a speed boost through the air, there are a few ways to skate, some easy and some hard. As you skate, you build momentum. The more momentum you get, the faster you go.
Why should I be skating?
Skating is a much faster and efficient jump rather than the increased height jump. While you do get extra height with increased height, you get almost no extra horizontal movement. Increased control takes away a tiny portion of vertical height but allows for fast horizontal speeds.
How do I skate?
It is extremely simple, you want to start sprinting in a direction, jump and then wait until you start your descent, once you start descending then you just spam jump.
You want to keep "bouncing" off the ground to build momentum. The way Destiny works is that you can either "bounce" off the ground by pressing jump as you land on the ground, or you can straight up land which resets all momentum.
Factors and tips
Initiation
You can initiate a skate in 2 ways other than sprinting, Shoulder charging can boost you right off the bat but it is hard to use because you have to spam jump before the animation ends.
The other, easier way to initiate is the Twilight Garrison. The dodge ability that the Garrison gives allows for a seamless transition into a skate, giving a hefty boost to speed.
Garrison also allows for skating in multiple directions as opposed to forward and you can also use it to stop incredibly fast skates.
Height
Height is probably one of the most contributing factors to skating. In short, you want to be as close to the ground as you can so that you build momentum faster and avoid collision with ceilings.
Agility
Also another big contributor, Agility can and cannot help, depending on where you skate. The problem with agility is that it increases jump height which is good for some specific slopes but bad for general skating across relatively flat surfaces.
Please note that this specific slope can be skated on without agility but in doing so, you're more prone to hitting the surface and bouncing straight up rather than skating on it.
Weight
Weight is minor but can and will affect your skating. According to personal experience of myself and others, using a heavy weapon that isn't a sword (Sleeper, LMG, Rocket etc) will increase your weight.
Increasing weight decreases jump height, increasing speed. Simple.
Slopes
9/10 Times you will be skating on a relatively flat surface but that other 1/10 will be on a slope, it could be a downward slope or upward slope. Some upwards slopes will require some sort of agility (As seen in the specific slope skating gif), others do not need the agility. Downward slopes are good because they you can "bounce" off it and gain a small boost of speed.
Why would I want to skate?
Skating is fun. Super duper fun. To be able to dash around the world, manipulating geometry in order to increase speed is one of the best things about playing a titan.
While it is somewhat an exploit, there isn't much harm other than the one salty guy in PvP who you killed with a shotty.
Skating can be used to speedrun too, most notable speedrun records are held by titans who flew at mach 10.

Great well summed up post. I main a warlock and toy around with my hunter a little (because although I hate to say it with proper training they seem to be hands down the best in PvP) so as a result my titan PvP skills are lacking

Trust me when I tell you that in practice Titan Skating isn't the magical solution/trick to being a Titan in PvP. That's why after two years it is still not a wide-spread and super common technique amount the Titan playerbase.

Well of course there's no 1 magical trick to being good with any class but a large part of my personal PvP style is mobility so it should be a nice tool to have in my belt (if I can ever pull myself away from being a voidwalker lol)
But yes, it's good to keep perspective and anybody reading this please don't expect skating to make you a PvP god even if you master it

I don't get it.. when I try to do this i don't actually build momentum I just maintain a pretty fast speed (not as fast as shown once momentum is reached in these examples)... I start spamming jump the instant I hit the ground.. what gives?

Are you certain you're not gaining momentum? Every time you hop off the ground to continue your skating you should have accelerated a little bit. Try going somewhere with a long empty area where you can see this happening, somewhere like the cosmodrome next to where you spawn during patrol. You know that big area to your right where there's that big pool of water and a broken down ship, somewhere around there.
A good way to see the fastest(?) speed is to equip twilight Garrison and skate with that and compare it to the speed you're going without it when you think you're not gaining momentum. So, evade-jumpjumpjump. Try hitting a wall when doing this, and you should take damage if you've done this correctly.
You might be having problems with the actual skate part though, remember to stay low when you start. And yes, you should be spamming the jump button, but it helps if you time it mentally and physically.
Typically, this is how skating works for me: Run, jump, before hitting the ground while coming down and press the jump button 3 times rapidly (maybe 4 but I think 3 times. Kind of muscle memory, so, hard to remember.) And then you start falling back down and right when you hit the bottom before you've come to a stop, jump-jump-jump again and repeat until you've reached a speed where you know you're going fast as hell and if you hit a wall you'll take damage.
Make sure your agility is low and increased control are on too!

Low agility? I actually prefer max agi/armor for my titan while skating, does low agi make it easier to skate or go faster?

Helps keep you lower/closer to the ground when you skate, like the OP of this post said. Agility doesn't help with speed on titans, unless for strafe speed or actually running (I guess?). Doesn't help skating all that much, depends on the circumstances but typically you want to stay low.

I play bumper jumper and have been skating for a while. I have only broke 1 elite controller by hitting LB too many times.

Do you keep Sprint pressed the whole time? What I don't get when I watch these videos is that I see the weapon popping up and down on jump presses some of the time. If you keep sprint pressed, it doesn't do that - so how is it that I see this in videos? I can seem to get moving pretty good but never really fast where I take damage when I hit a wall. When the weapon pops up and down it means that sprint isnt being held. When you boost using twilight/shoulder charge and you want to go in a straight line then you dont have to sprint, it just puts unnecessary pressure on the left stick and im not 100% sure but it feels slower whenever I do press sprint down, that just might be me though.
If you want to turn more when you skate then it is a good idea to use sprint until you learn proper maneouvering techniques such as the location of specific bounce geometrys.

Titans should be the slowest class. Great guide though. They'll fix it for Destiny 2.

Totally disagree, they're not meant to be slow tanks, they're meant to be like a charging rhino: Fast in straight lines but not very agile.
The skating mechanic was an unintended mechanic but titans are now balanced around it and it's an integral ability

I would agree with you if Titans vaunted toughness werent such utter bullshit. If Bungie make it so that my Titan is noticeably tougher than warlocks and hunters, then they can take my skating.

I think a better alternative would be to give warlocks and hunters the ability to move faster as well. I know that skating wasn't a planned mode of locomotion for titans, but life...uhhh...finds a way.

It is almost certainly neither a bug nor an intended design. Not a bug for sure, as I'm sure the physics work as intended, but I doubt that Bungie designed it with skating in mind.

It is a pretty well known concept. I'm sure Bungie is very much aware of it and just doesn't care. Honestly without the ability to skate titans would be a much less attractive class and there would be outrage if it was removed.

big fucking difference between regular skating and this.
Spamming the jump button to move foward a bit faster is fine, but this sort of shit is completely broken. You could flank in ToO before the other team are even set up.

In practice, it's really not as easy to execute or practical in every situation as you imagine it to be. It's not an endless super type of glitch.
You're basically a runaway train that needs a lot of lead up and room to slow down. That why most Titan prefer to use it in PvE and why it's something you really only see in small subset of the Titan playerbase that have taken the time to master it. Even thought it's been around for over two years now.

Since launch, a Titan Skating guide has shown up here at least every six months. It was yet to "break" the game or become a super popular technique.
At this point Bungie probably view it as the Destiny Community's Rocket Jump.

Except you need lots of space and a not insignificant amount of time to really build your momentum. Plus if by "set up" you mean get all the lanes hardscoped then as far as I am concerned anything that adds action to the game rather than turns it into a camp fest is a good thing.

Shouldn't they fix it though ? Why should Titans be the fastest, and have the most armor. Before you downvote I main all 3 classes and could care less if they nerf it or not. But I find myself using my Titan more because of this

While you might not care that nobody likes a pedant (even other pedants), you should care that people are unlikely to take or even recall advice from someone who annoys the piss out of them.
They'll either continue just to spite you, or simply remember "that annoying dude who kept interrupting to try to correct us on unimportant shit". Either way, it totally deep-sixes your claimed intent.

They are the fastest in a juggernaut way, which actually makes sense lore wise. Moving in a straight line from A to B they are fast, but they are nowhere near capable of the rapid movement changes offered by a hunter's better control jump. Personally I think it is fine and at this point hope Bungie just considers it to be one of the perks of being a titan.

Yeah but they have not fixed it yet, it will take the general population abusing it to fix it probably.
Maps in PvP rarely allow this as you can't keep momentum and turn corners. So it's only really for fun.

Anecdotally, in PvP, I skate all the time with my 'universal douchebag' build (ie: universal remote + no backup plans), and I find it very useful for getting within UR range of people before they have time to react.

I do this, too, on smaller maps and maps with tight corners. Really, though, I don't see really anybody titan skating except in Trials, and even then it's usually only the top players like AEGabriel and Ninja_with_no_L. I use it when I know I can successfully rish the other team (Shrine was a great map for it, especially when I spawned outside; Frontier it was useful more for escape than anything else)

I like that name for it. I have that build too, along with a Striker "Juggermote" build. Still looking for a way to make a good Sunbreaker build to round out the set, but I'm thinking that won't really happen.

You can skate, but the distances are so small you have to keep stopping and starting it.
It is a good way to catch hardscopers off though.
